That's pretty much my thoughts too. I'd love a classics Ginrai/SuperGinrai/GodGinrai but Fireguts isn't the one I had in mind. The colors on this mock up look good. The biggest eyesore for me is the Knight badge. It's like the club was screaming "See! He's a knight!"

If it only makes sense to you, I wouldn't really call that making "sense" (no offense)...

The set is Pirates vs. Knights.

I cannot find the word "knight" anywhere under any description of any Devcon character on the TFwiki. Neither can I find it on any Ginrai page (though I can find it in reference to the Sixknight character).

They could have called the set Pirates vs. Local Plumbers 386 and it would have the same amount of relevance to plumbers that it has to knights.

Well, think about it. If they wanted to create toys of comic-original and cartoon-original characters to pay tribute to both of their respective sources of fiction, wouldn't it make sense for an anniversary set to choose (among) the very first ones ever created by each?

Ferak was the first Marvel US original TF character, Tornado was one of Simon Furman's first Marvel UK original TF characters, and Devcon might have been the first Sunbow cartoon original TF character (unless anyone can think of someone memorable who came before him), so that's a possible reason for why those three in particular were chosen.

On the same note, Ferak, Tornado and Scorponok have never been Pirates either in their original fiction. >:oP

Yeah, people, aside from Cannonball, forget the theme and it's pretty clear that this is obviously an anniversary set for the 30th anniversary that commemorates the original comics, cartoon, toyline, and Japanese lore of the brand.

Those who were complaining that this was ill-fitting for the anniversary may eat their hats, now. :P

I was saying it was a good theme and I was looking forward to it. Turns out it's not all that Knighty in the Knight portion. Hauler would have been okay if it was a Pirates vs Plumbers set.

As a 30th anniversary set, as per Sabr's theory of these being the first characters of different types, it does make sense. I still don't like Ferak or Gingerai

Aside from Cannonball, the pirates aren't too pirate-y either.

But consider this. After 30 years, is it really that far out of the question for everyone other than Cannonball to have chosen a new career path?

It really seems that this year's theme has its character roster rooted more in the story that the characters will be in rather in the characters themselves.

Interesting, so they mixed Japanese and US G1 together by mentioning "Planet Master" and "Nebulan" in the same story. :-?

Cannonball is retroactively the first Star Seeker character as well, right?

For this continuity, yeah. Thundertron exists in the Aligned continuity, though, and has a crew that Aligned Cannonball is a part of.

Cybertron Cannonball was a pirate though, right? When Thundertron was released as a Star Seeker, and the fiction made it known that he was captain of a crew that included Cannonball, that would have RETROACTIVELY made Cannonball the first Star Seeker to get a toy. :BANG_HEAD:

Oh, I see what you're saying, now.

No, Cybertron Cannonball is still a Decepticon. His fiction keeps him as a Decepticon instead of Star Seeker, just not a Decepticon who serves under Megatron/Galvatron.

Cybertron Cannonball (UT): Pirate, Captain, no Star Seeker
BotCon Cannonball (G1): Pirate, Captain and Star Seeker
Aligned Cannonball: Pirate, Star Seeker, but no Captain (appears only in Exiles).

Three different characters :) This Cannonball still remains the second Star Seeker toy after Thundertron, but the first for G1.

Aligned Cannonball is also in Retribution.

And Wings/G1 has had another Cannonball in the past before this one. He was a Maraudicon.

There's also Viron/RiD Cannonball, whom we know little about.

Just because it somehow makes sense if you connect this dot to that on a blood red moon Tuesday morning doesn't mean it really makes sense or that this set should be made. Scorponok might be the gem here (waiting to see more pics of how the Headmaster unit connects because I think it's going to end up with "weird upper torso" or "wide neck" syndrome) and Devcon was more along the lines of what I think BotCon figures should be (though the colors or color placements still leave much to be desired about Devcon).

I think you're over rationalizing the set and trying to make connections where it doesn't matter if connections are made. It's not an attractive combined set. Bottom line is this ... is this really a set worthy of the 20th Anniversary of BotCon and the 30th Anniversary of the Transformers brand? Is it a set that's really worth $350 to $400? If you can answer "yes" for yourself, then more power to you. If you can answer "no" like myself, then I'll be more than happy to continue stating that this is an ill-fitting set for the anniversaries at hand.

I agree with Ryan. Scorponok seems to be first place winner (not to mention now raising the standards of BotCon and the Club with their figures) with second place being Devcon, third Cannonball (simply because I have more of an attatchment and this more familiar with the continuity family he originally hailed from), Ferak and Tornado fourth (though Tornado is adorable), and Ginrai being fifth. Nothing against the choices, but I feel there could've been a better choice than Ginrai.

I don't disagree with this, but despite my initial hesitations towards this figure, it's starting to grow on me.

The more I think about it, is this the first American-released Super Saiyan Transformer?

Didn't the "super" versions of the RID Autobot Brothers get released in the west?

Yeah, but those forms of theirs weren't that much of the same "Super Saiyan" variety that Fire Guts God Ginrai, Burning Convoy, Flash Lio Convoy, and all the Burning Justice power up forms in the Cybertron cartoon were.

Theirs were more just "stronger, non-super magical versions of their normal selves with new colors".

I'm thinking they did... but Robots in Disguise isn't my forté.

And as much as it pains me to say this, I admit, Ginrai is starting to grow on me. I don't mind getting a second version of Classics Optimus.

yup. and i dont think its unfounded that theyd make a trailer for this guy since theyve done a black one already. besides, maketoys have made two other battle tankers specifically for botcon figures. xovergen totally could too.

thats a little unfair. after all its only a digibash. im willing to bet he looks pretty good in hand. and i like the black on the thighs.

anyways, im purely looking at the figures. not the lore that binds them, or the reasoning for the choices in the line up. i have no use for cannonball. i love the cyclonus mold to death, if he was hot pink and named arcee id still buy it. for ferak is in. devcon and scorponok are in for all kinds of kickassery. and fire guts is in because i hope for a trailerforce. if not, i wont lament the figure.

this will be the first full botcon set ive ever bought. only one ive ever wanted before was the beast wars set.
