Combiners: When and Why Do They Do What They Do?

With all the excitement surrounding Combiner Wars, I was wondering: When do combiner teams decide to combine, and why? Why would you want to break up the gestalt in favor of a smaller, less powerful team of bots?
Maybe it's the size of the gestalt compared to its individual members. Maybe it's the power consumption involved when in a larger form. Perhaps the bots might get tired of sharing each others thoughts in a lengthy combination. Maybe if a team is dealing with a considerably powerful opponent, such as the individual Constructicons fighting Omega Supreme, they'd want to combine to more effectively deal with the threat.
Any thoughts on this?

when the goin gets tough!
thats actually my serious answer. use power rangers as an example: they fight the new villain, lose, he comes back the size of a giant, they fight with the megazord, win.
any combiner uses the same formula most of the time. maybe if they didnt make them seem so worthless in their un-combined form, this wouldnt be the case. but hey, no body complains because... combining is AWESOME!

That's pretty much how it goes. You're battling against some pretty tough odds and you got five dudes on your team who can merge into a bigger dude, you get them to do so. Wreak some havoc on your opponent's forces with the biggest stick you can find.

Combiners become a bigger robot because as a little kid. I love big robots. Combiners help transformers attract the 3 to 7 year olds.

I think combiners are like smart bombs. You have a team of individuals, skilled at what they do, who are easily delivered to a specific point of conflict.
They are then able to combine into their gestalt form for maximum impact with minimal effort to arrive.
Each team has different functions and I would imagine that the combined form is more potent than the individuals separately. My thought has always been that the combined mode is a draining effort on fuel reserves and cannot be maintained for long. I would further guess that it damages the individuals with prolonged exposure.
