Similarities in Shockwave and Arnim Zola (Marvel)

They're both mad scientists, rooting for the "evil team", and shop at the same place.
But I'm wondering if this is a reason why Hasbro has deviated away from our classical purple and yellow head Shockwave. In cartoons, after G1, I think only Shockblast from Energon was sporting that. If you look at Animated, his optic is red, and vertical rectangle. It remains red even after he changes to his true colors. Come WFC and then FOC, Shockwave's eye is purple. In TFP, it's red again. Also DOTM is red. In IDW and Dreamwave, it is yellow. Maybe comics have more artistic freedom, but toys or "media" they may have a higher chance of being sued (provided Arnim was made first).
Does any one know why they keep changing it? From a design point of view, the red optics has been overplayed everywhere, Hal 9000 for example. That distinct yellow optic was referred to many times in G1 episodes, it was a focal point.
