I'm glad you mentioned that it doesn't have to be toy-specific, as I was about to ask that!
I wouldn't say I find solace in thinking about certain characters, but I do like to see parts of myself in two characters from the current IDW run: Soundwave and Windblade.
The former is an idealist who has gone through some seriously rough times, found a support system/friendship with the cassettes, and was ultimately used and manipulated by figures he looked up to. Twice, at least. He has synesthesia, he felt like an outsider, and has since fought extremely hard to finally realise his dream, only to encounter another wall of Deception.
Windblade, on the other hand, is both outsider and newcomer, still trying to figure out how balances work, what is going on around her in the new setting she finds herself in, while still maintaining some serious power dynamics and networks as ambassador and delegate. She's an interpreter, a diplomat, far from home, and has a lot of care for pretty much anyone.
They both actually, fully believe in the Till All Are One ideal. And that is admirable.
