So, i am asking you..on my 100th post. What is a TRUE Transformers fan.
Do you have to hate the movie to be one? Do you need all existing toy? Do you have to bitch out Beast Wars?
Or do you simply need to like Transformers?
And now...at long last..

There is no such thing as a true fan. It's a term used by people to make themselves feel like they're better than others by elevating their opinion and lowering those of people who disagree with them.
You're either a fan or you're not.

So this is what you come up with for you "100th" post?
Umm, looks like 1000 to me, and TF's aren't exclusive. You either like em or you dont. Nuff said.

I don't know what a "true" fan is. If that means you simply like the idea of Transformers, but not every incarnation that's been developed necessarily, then I'm a "true" fan. Quite honestly, though, I do think that term is something someone gives themself when they defend something others might not particularly like. I had a debate with a comic book guy about G1. This guy loves Transformers but hates G1. I might think he's blasphemous, but I wouldn't say he's not a "true" fan. Or whatever. I'm confusing myself.

I love everything about Transformers so I would call myself a true fan. Either that, or a very obsess fan.

I know of a few "closet" fans. They're definitely not true fans.

1.) There is no such thing as a "true" fan.
2.) As stated before, you either are a fan, or you're not. That's the only thing that can be true or not, whether you're a fan or you aren't.
3.) And I cannot stress this enough, do not listen to M "I just have to have the last word, and pat myself on the back because I have that much of an ego and nobody is willing to do it for me, because I'm a mean bastard who thinks higher of himself than any other human being in existence. Past, present or future." Sipher. (And yes, he ends his ridiculous ego driven posts with those idiotic "last word/slam" quotes in the middle of his name.)
He's not the end all, be all of Transfandom, and I'd even say he's one of the worst examples of what a "true" fan could be. Listening to his "advice" or FAQ is a bad thing to do....

I wish people would just drop the whole "true" fan thing, not just for transformers, but for anything that has a fan base.

Interesting viewpoint. I've never spoken to him personally, though I know he was a big name on ATT and have seen him referenced in a number of sources that I consider to be good material. What's your side of the coin?
As an aside, I'd point out that the FAQ I linked to is written by Steve-o Stonebraker, not M Sipher, and the specific post - while admittedly a long-winded rant - makes exactly the same point that you do in declaiming against the idea of a 'true fan' who is somehow better, purer, nobler than any other fan.

Asking What is a true fan is the same thing as asking what is normal There is no definate answer to the question Your either a fan or your not you either Like TFs or you dont. See the problem is is that any one who likes Tfs is a fan of them whether you like Head masters or you dont whether we agree on which character is better than which. Doesn't really matter I believe everyone whom likes Transformers probably also hates certain aspects of them as well but reguardless of our personal likes and dislikes of certain aspects pertaining to Tfs or favorite characters and the ones we dislike is irrellavant when it comes to trying to decide whom is a True fan and whom is not. Ultimately it doesn't matter if you like all aspects of Transformers or just a single aspects the bottom line is that you are a fan no greater or less than anyone else whom likes them. So in essence their is no such thing as a true fan You are either a fan or your not. Its that simple people.

A "true fan" of some sort of fandom is a fan that realizes that, although they enjoy their respective fandom, they are not the only fan of said fandom and that other people exist within as well as outside their arena of fandom and, hence, can accept the fact that their opinions of fandom is not the same as the collective opinions, facts, and potential fathoms of imagination that may sprout from said fandom.
Btw, this reminds me of back when that show "Beat the Geeks" was airing and one episode had the "guest Geek" was supposed Star Wars Geek and this woman came on claiming that she was master of Star Wars knowledge, but even I (a person who only knows Star Wars through watching the movies everyonce and awhile) was able to IM my friend at the time who is really a Star Wars guy and discuss with him where I knew she was stating wrong things based on actual facts in the movies, but she continued to act as though she was so much better than all the other Star Wars fans out there just because she was chosen to be on that show.

a true fan is someone who geniunely likes transformers for the sake of transformers, not someone who likes transformers in order to try and be cool.
cos if they where cool they'd like transformers anyway

You clearly didn't actually
read the linked post, and assumed what he said was garbage because it's him. I don't know the guy, as I hardly ever go on ATT, I
do know he always uses those things in his name, and he's not the only one.
But if you actually
did read it, instead of blindly slamming him, you'd know that what he says
in this instance basically backs up what most people have said here already, including yourself in '1.)'; that you're a true fan if you like Transformers in and of themselves. And as much of a rant as it is, I'd say it's pretty well put.

A true fan is someone who likes to complaint everthing about other thing that are not G1s.
