Why are Dinobots so popular?

This is my second attempt at posting this topic, last time my computer crashed and I lost everything so now I'm going to try and remember everything in my original post that never got posted.

OK first off, personally I do not like the Dinobots. They're about as high on the annoyance scale as Blurr, Wheelie, and the Insecticons in terms of lame stupid speech patterns.

Other than my personal dislike for them I can't help but notice that they are the one G1 sub-group that has had a new incarnation in just about every single toy line. I just have to ask out of all the sub-groups why Dinobots?

I can't find one single appealing thing about them. In fact they seem to incorperate just about everything fans hate yet. Lame stupid speech patter, beast modes, and dispite the fact they're "Transformers" the Dinobots are in Beast mode 99% of the time. They rarely ever transform. Even if they did transform what kind of disguise is a giant metal dinosaur? Even if they looked real what good would that be in a time when dinos no longer exist?

Now BW Dinobot is a whole different story. He may use the name but he's NOTHING like the G1 Dinobots. First off, Dinobots are a sub-group of the Autobots. Dinobot started off as a Predacon and joined the Maximals shortly after crashing on Earth. Dinobots are actully more closly related to Waspinator in terms of refering to yourself by name constantly. (allthough Waspinator didn't say "Me Waspinator" like the Dinobots did) Dinobot allso has the added bonus of actully looking like a raptor and being on a prehistoric earth not a metal raptor. (at least not at first) And Dinobot is a much better leader than Grimlock. He actully has a sence of stratigy and honor where Grimlock just breaks stuff.

So that's really all I have to say on that subject. This topic will not be used to argue between weather you like the Dinobots or not. I'm posting this so you can try to exsplain why so many like the Dinobots. I only stated my opinion to exsplain my P.O.V. and reason for posting this topic.

The basic summary is "I don't understand why you like Dinobots for the abouve reasons please exsplain."

I'm not even going to reply to this topic unless I have a spicific question to ask because I don't really have anything to add. This is basically only the first post is allowed to say anything negitive.

This topic is here to help me understand out of all the sub-groups from G1 why are the Dinobots the popular ones who get to be reincarnated in every following toy line.

I think I'm repeating myself alot but I just wanna make absolutly sure the purpus of the topic is lost or missunderstood.

Exsplain to me why you like the Dinobots.

OK, let's see if I can explain why I like them (& keep in mind, this is only my opinion.)

They are the autobot's enforcers. They were designed to be tough, badass, intimidating....but that's about it. I believe in the original cartoon it was explained that this was because they were given simple brains to make them more like real dinosaurs...Though this is one of the few times I would rather go with the comic's angle on them where grimlock just has a speech impediment & is overly aggressive, but is pretty damn smart & is one of the autobots' best tacticians. Plus, giant robot dinosaurs are pretty cool.

Oh, & why would the Dino forms be useful? Simple: intimidation...I mean, for humans destructive giant robots would be enough, but the decepticons already are giant robots, but if you saw a giant ferocious alien creature when you were expecting something like a car....you'ld probably be lubricating in your leg armor, too. Disguise isn't just used for hiding, ya know. & one thing that's kind of a pet peeve of mine: people see to forget about Transformers....they weren't necessarily trying to hide from people...they were trying to hide from each other.

Aside from that, yeah I kinda share the grieveances you have. They made them stupid & annoying, & used their dino modes waay to much.

I've always disliked the cartoon Dinobots. Though I love their comic counterparts.

The comic Dinobots have a far superior portrayal in both personalities and storylines. I bet you'd really like them, there's some key features that set them apart from their cartoon counterparts.

From the Marvel UK comics:
- The Dinobots in the comics weren't built because Wheeljack had a "good" idea to build new robots. Instead they already lived on Cybertron 4 million years and joined the Ark crew.

- The comic Dinbots aren't mentally retarded like their cartoon counterparts. All of them except Sludge have average to high intelligence. Grimlock appears to have high intelligence and often shows great insight, although he isn't flawless.

- The Dinobots are almost always in robotmode. they only change into their Dino-modes when it could provide a advantage in battle (like when they are fighting at close range).

- Only Grimlock speaks in incoherent sentences, this was due to a glitch in his system. He never had this glitch fixed because it caused his enemies to underestimate him (much to his advantage). Only Swoop is more "refined" with his linguistical skills.

- Swoop had a rivalry with Divebomb. Swoop was originally named Divebomb, but the Predacon Divebomb stole his name. Swoop confronted him about this again, but he was beaten. Optimus Prime showed up and beat Divebomb, Swoop was emberrased by the fact that he couldn't beat Divebomb on his own. He later kept this a secret from the other Dinobots. But it later turned out that Grimlock knew all along, he eventually told Swoop that he didn't have to be ashamed about it.

- Grimlock has been leader of the Autobots twice, the first time he was a tyrant. The second time he was more laid back and planned ahead. He for instance kept some captured Decepticon battlecruisers as a ace up sleeve when he was dealing with the evacuation of Cybertron (Cybertron was slowly tearing itself apart after the battle with Unicron). Both Autobots and Decepticons were in a hurry to leave Cybertron and started working together to get some old ships back into working order. However the Autobot ships were sabotaged by the Decepticons. Grimlock then busted out the hidden ships after the Decepticons left.

- Grimlock at one point was the only active Dinobot (before the battle with Unicron). He went on a dangerous journey to find a way to revive his stasislocked Dinobots. This journey gave a good amount of insight into how Grimlock cares about the other Dinobots.

- The comic Dinobots actually got violent killed their enemies from time to time.

"SOS Wheeljack" gives some good insights as well:

My reason for liking them is incredibly simple. They are big metal juggernauts who would prefer to crush everything in their path rather than waste time with stealth or strategy. :p

And they're good for a laugh too.

maybe YOU are annoying, and the dinobots hate YOU. ever think of that? :P

i love the idea of the dinobots and of course grimlock's supreme badass'ness, plus giant metal dinosaurs is just a good idea, but dont think i dont like non dino dynobots i think like grimlocks WWI mode even more than his t-rex mode

i despise the animated dino's during and after the movie, the dumbing down into comic releif dosnt help at all.

Yeah, not a huge cartoon Dinobot fan, and the fact that they are barely in robot mode doesn't help. However, like others have stated, comic Grimlock is FAR superior to the cartoon. In fact, I rather like him. I prefer him to not be so stupid, yet still have the "me" in his choppy sentences.

I think it is kind of funny, however, that the Dinobots in the cartoon are so dumb that they just sit behind a door til someone needs them.

I prefer the comic Dinobots over the Cartoon versions anyday.

However I think that they're popularity stems from the fact that the Dinobots were always the "anti-heroes" They are the guys that dont follow the rules, yet still are good guys.

That and they are Dinosaurs, who are popular with children, I'd bet a fair few of the members of Seibertron went through a Dinosaur phase at one point in their life.

Has anyone read the new Shockwave Spotlight. It has the Dinobots. I think it is good for people to read if they hate the dinobots or absolutely love them!

They'd open the door and the dinobots would immediately speak back to them. So either they reactivated themselves quickly or they tweedled their thumbs til they got the call. I thought it was funny anyway.

I'm very glad that I never wanted a Dinobot combiner when I was younger, or the Energon version would have killed me. Energon Grimlock and Swoop are two figures that are certainly much better on their own.

Or, perhaps the room is empty and they enjoy the same living quarters as Bender on Futurama does.

Dinobot is a bunch that don't combine. They're like beer buddy. Only they don't drink beer.
