As we all know, Autobots and Decepticons are Cybertronians. They arrived on Earth and their alt mode gets reformatted into Earth vehicles and machines.
As far as i understood it, all of them retain their original robot mode, which is their personal identity.
But i noticed something when i watched the G1 tv episodes again.
Laserbeak's alt mode didn't change. Instead, it is his robot mode that changed. From a spaceship-like robot, into an eagle-like robot.
Do Cybertronians use cassette tapes?
What's the logic behind changing his robot mode?

I wonder how would the other cassettes look like in Cybertronian mode. Particularly Ravage.

It could be that Soundwave on Cybertron took on various forms, but his main one was a communications device just we saw him as one of his spying modes and not the real communication item. Perhapes it's something that's like a cassette, but not quiet the same.
By the way, where do we see Laser beak in cassette mode on Cybertron?

It's on the very first episode. The original G1 tv cartoon.
What's really baking my noodles is that, why the need to alter his robot mode? Altering the vehicle/alt mode to fit into Earth vehicles or machine suits well for the purpose of disguise. But changing the robot mode doesn't quite make sense.

Maybe the reason he changed his robot mode is becuase he can't change his cassette mode. Since he stays in robot mode more to scout it would make sense to alter the robot form to blend in with Earths creatures so as to spy better and not be spotted by the Autobots. The Decepticons alter their alt modes to blend in, this is the same thing that Laser beak is doing only he's doing it in a slightly different way since, the tape mode is used to play back info. Where as Rumble and Frenzy are more untilzed as grunts so they're not recording and spying.

Cybertronian cassettes are more durable than CD's. These guys are built for war. CD's won't be able to survive long.

Maybe... But the lamp post Soundwave transformed into looked like him standing up with his hands and head concealed. What sort of a disguise is that? o.o

A lame lamp post type of disguise.
