I can only see disaster for HASBRO if this is allowed to happen. Hopefully it will be Universal that takes on most of the financial risk:

Hasbro Inc on Wednesday said it signed a six-year deal with Universal Pictures for the film company to make at least four movies based on well-known games like Monopoly, Battleship, Candy Land and Ouija. 8-}

Wow, thats gotta be one of the worse ideas in....wait, Pluto Nash was the worse idea in movie history. But still, thats pretty bad.

Their marketing team must be really struggling for ideas. You'd never think that since its 28 bucks US a share of stock.

Sadly enough, I can visualize what those movies may look like.

Monopoly: wealthy people of various ages driving around like crazy to reach the best deals in real estate, with the energy of Cannonball Run.

Candyland: a children's fairy tale in a fantastic setting with overdone scenery and strange but helpful creatures.

Battleship: naval warfare at long distance with great drama, sometimes at close range in a fog.

Ouija: A modern-style horror movie about young people in an attic searching for answers but winding up with more than they bargained for.

There are audience types for each. Universal tends to make good movies, and these will be enjoyed by the right audiences despite their questionable origins.

Rainbow Bright starring Lindsay Lohan.

Hungry Hungry Hippos voice actors Robin Williams, Rosanne Barr and Christopher Walken. "Gotta have more Hippo baby."

It's sad to say that I can actually SEE these movies made...and such a vision unsettles me.

Hollywood sucks!

You should be writing the screenplays, you have good vision.
Hasbro wouldn't sign on to lose money. These could make decent
story lines and opens Hasbro to release new versions of their
board games. I would go see a movie based on Hungry, Hungry Hippos, I did see Tank Girl on the big screen.

Wait, are you serious?

I saw Tank Girl on UPN or something and it could easily be one of the worst movies ever created, if Barbed Wire hadn't been made that is.

Isn't this old news? Or maybe they were just talking about future plans around the time the TF movie came out.

Death nell is a little strong for this don't you think. Tehy might lose some money, but, you win some, you lose some. Also, who knows how much they are getting from Universal for the rights. It might be a very lucrative deal.

True enough. I am concerned that Hasbro will try to promote the hell out of these movies with toys and games that do not sell and stick tonnes of money into something that will implode their bottom-line (ie Easy Bake Oven fiasco). Thus impacting the TF line if that implosion spreads. Worse case scenario I know but it has happened before to bigger companies than Hasbro and it will happen again.

Well, Clue was a fun movie (plus it had Tim Curry!). But then, that was a board game that actually had a specific story to it already.

I *could* think of decent possible storylines for the basic gist of Monopoly, Candyland, Battleship, and Ouija. But there's really very little that's *specific* about those board games in terms of story... they'd just kind of be your typical Wall Street, kiddie fairytale, naval warfare, and supernatural weirdness sort of stories.

Oh, I have no doubt thwey will promote the hell out of the movies and make a whole bunch of crappy toys that won't sell. However, that really does appear to be their strategy. Make a whole lot of crap and hopefully a couple will make it big.

Also, once discounted, all the crap will sell anyway. Really comes down to what their bottom line on crappy toys is and how much tax relief they are getting from the write offs. Creative accrual accoutning fixes all, ;-)

My favorite Monopoly game is the Seattle edition that my cousins gave me, with the old Star Wars Micro Machines as the "lots" so that you buy the ship when you buy a deed. It confuses the hell out of anyone I try to play with, though. :-P
