A lot of people ride out of service police motorcycles, but for nostalgia keep them looking like the real thing. I can't see how this is any different. I've seen some "police" bikes with an out of service sign on the saddlebags.

Most retired police vehicles are required by law (at least in this state) to have the police decals and other law-enforcement accoutraments removed from the vehicle prior to private-citizen sales. I guess it is all up to the particular state and local laws regarding the private use of retired service vehicles, and those differ greatly from region to region.
I think it just makes sense to not be driving around a "fake police car"...in this day and age, where it is some sort of badge of honor with some unscrupulous youth to cap a cop, it can also be VERY unsafe to drive said "fake police cars"!
