Depending on the media he was depicted in:
Marvel comics: Optimus
Cartoon: Orion Pax
DW comics: Optronix

I prefer Optronix because I absolutely loved The War Within, but I'm sure G1 purists will go with Orion Pax because it was in the old cartoon.

As much as I loved "The War Within", I thought Optronix was a stupid name. As far as I'm concerned, he was just called "Optimus".

I don't ever recall where in the DW WWI series Prime being refered to as Opronix. It must take place within the first six pages so I'm sure that will narrow it down for me.

I don't mind either, but the War Within origin was really well done.

I prefer the Marvel comic continuity. Orion Pax is the better name, but I didn't really like him as a character & Optronix just doesn't sound right.

I don't think DW ever did use that name in print themselves. HOWEVER...it was in the Hardwired novels spun off the DW G1 continuity, Furman put it in the DK guide, and Hasbro used it as his former name for the bio on 6" Titanium figure. Plus, Optronix's previous job was as an archivist and Ironhide's datatrack on Optimus' MTMTE profile specifically mentions that aspect of his past. Seems to pretty clear to me that DW Optimus' pre-Prime name was Optronix.
Although, Hardwired also mentions that Optronix's nickname to his friends was Orion, so it could be argued that he used to be called Orion in both continuities.

Orion Pax was a twat, but he had to be that way, otherwise he couldn't have developed into the prime that bluprinted the role, and couldn't have given the soppy moral at the end of war dawn.
still Optronix sounds like a contact lens solution.

I'm going with Orion Pax, for the simple reason that it's what I've always known.

I think Orion Pax is the best sounding name so I'll stick with that.

I don't know what being a G1 Purist has to do with anything. I like Orion Pax because I only ever watched the Cartoons, never read the comics.
Would have been nice if some of the other cartoons did a "Before the Matrix" version of Optimus. BW obviously wouldn't do it because Optimus Primal doesn't even have the Matrix. RID, Armada, Energon, and Cybertron could have done it though.
RID Actully had a good reason to do a flashback sceen with Optimus and Ultra Magnus but don't think they ever did. Would have been great to see a RID Version of Alpha Trion and Orion Pax (or whatever they decided to call him.) Alpha Trion was mentioned as their "father" in the same episode where Prime revieled Magnus as his brother but they never showed Alpha Trion. (At least not that I know of I missed alot of the series.)

I liked him being called Orion Pax as opposed to WWI, though I like his WWI verison of pre-Matrix better than the cartoon.

Makes me wonder what Ultra Magnus would have been called if he got the matrix instead of Hot Rod.

Magnus Prime, I'd imagine.

The Episode Orion Pax appeared on was called "War Dawn" I just looked it up on YouTube.com and they have the full episode there.
BTW This is actully the first time I've even seen War Dawn (that I can remember) and I didn't realize how un-Optimus-like Orion was till just now. He sounds and acts NOTHING like Optimus Prime, in fact the only thing they seem to have in common at all is their color scemes.

I liked War Within quite a bit. I like how it tore the more ridiculous chunks out of the Transformers lore and replaced it with something more concrete and serious, and I really like how they took Optimus Prime's former self out of the realm of "carefree jerk" to "concerned and helpful technician". It lends itself better to the eventual outcome of his ascension to Prime. He is cautious. He does his duty. He turns away glory. He gets the job done. When he becomes Prime, these traits all remain, and are in fact enhanced by his new strength and responsibility. Throughout The War Within, we get to see how eventually, he adds leadership, confidence and charisma to his repetoire as well. When the say "does he seem bigger to you?" it starts to mean his character instead of just his size.
As for the name? Orion Pax falls under the category of "the writers flipped open a latin primer and a book of astronomy and took whatever sounded neat", whereas Optronix actually implies what his job was, which fits in with just about every other transformer ever. It's the perfect name for a tactical operations/communications character, while lending itself easily to change when the Prime factor becomes present.
So, my choice is Optronix.

A fair argument.

What I'd really like to know is, who did Dion turn into? Elita-One and Optimus Prime both kept their original colors and not much elce so if you matched Dion's color sceme with that of another transformer in the future that would make him... Huffer?

Some people like to think it's Magnus or Ironhide, but neither are ever actually even hinted at as being Dion. The horrible truth is that Dions dead.

True, there's no hint given in the episode as to who or what was made of Dion.
(Although, assuming he did survive, and given that Alpha's time and resources were already backed up by shattered robots by the dozens, this would seem to suggest Alpha didn't really have a lot of room to be creative in rebuilding Dion - hence, he might have just re-used Optimus' design sans the colors.

)

Well in the origional cartoon Optimus Prime was know as Orionpax. In the Dreamwave comics he was known as Optronix which I like way better than the Cartoon more concrete and subatantial history. In the origional marvel Comic if he had a previous name before becoming Prime it was never reveiled.
