Some time ago there was a trailer that showed KITT change from one type of car to another and then say something like 'transformation complete'. Does that answer the question?

I believe that the new version of KARR (KITTs evil twin) is supposed to be a robot, so that might be what you saw.

KARR is mentioned in the new Knight Rider series episode "Knight of the Living Dead", and was said to be a prototype of KITT (Knight Industries Three Thousand). The KARR acronym now stands for "Knight Auto-Cybernetic Roving Robot-Exoskeleton" and instead of an automobile, a schematic display showed a humanoid-looking robot with wheeled legs that converts into an ambiguous off-road vehicle. Similar to the original character, this incarnation of KARR had an AI that was programmed for self-preservation and was subsequently deactivated and placed in storage after killing seven people.

In the episode, a spy infiltrates the Knight headquarters and activates a hidden self-destruct program within KITT placed there secretly by Dr. Graiman. In order to save KITT's operating system, (which is given priority over KITT's memories), Michael and Sarah transmit the files to the back up computer at the headquarters, but the transmission is also intercepted by an unknown third party. It is stated that only KITT, KARR and the base back-up computer are the only systems able to run the program, and leaves Dr. Graiman with only one conclusion that someone is trying to reactivate KARR.[2]

The new Knight Rider series is supposed to be a continuation, not a re-imagining of the original series, however it appears KARR has been "retconned" for the continuing franchise. KARR is set to appear in the first season's 12th episode "Knight to King's Pawn", scheduled to air January 21st 2009 with Peter Cullen reprising the role. Furthermore, KARR may be significant to those parts of Mike's past he cannot remember – when looking at KARR's schematics, he evokes a sense of déjà vu, and says that he feels like he knows KARR somehow.

So now both KITT and KARR are transformers, in a sense?

I miss the Hoff.

I always liked the whole "evil twin" concept; so naturally I was a big fan of KARR back in the '80s. It'll be interesting to see what the new KARR is like in terms of his personality and similarities with KITT. He really doesn't seem to fit the "evil twin" role anymore though.

On a side note, I've been working on an illustration of the original KARR as a Transformer. I'll post the final pic when I'm done.
