a deep question: Why do you collect ?

Well personally I don’t know exactly why I’m collecting even what I collect, I got some predilection from characters like BOBAFETT, WOLVERINE, BATMAN, THE JOKER, THE STORMTROOPER, and for those character I by several figures in any formant 3 3 /4, 1/6, mini figures etc. but also I bought figures from several other characters like hawk man, flash, but they are secondary, now I’m so interested in art and vinyl toys, but even I look from representation of those character or some aesthetic figures.
Maybe I still love the figures that I got when I was a child now I’m buying the transformers encore, the secret wars figures from marvel, MOTU.
Also I like to decorate my house and keep things that I considered valuable stuff.
Here where I live I don’t have any friend who collects as me so I feel quite estrange and I don’ certainly know why I spend so much money in this hobby, and I start now to talk in forums I been watching before to check figures and get information.
Forget the bad English and I send you a greeting from Granada Spain

I collect because I like them and it makes me happy. What else is needed.

I like it.

I collect now because I loved TFs when I was growing up and my parents couldn't afford to buy me all of the "expensive" TF's I wanted. I got some, but there were 7 kids in my family. When I got money of my own, I got back into it.

I'm in that same boat with you regarding the toys. My whole house is decorated TF style. I'd rather have a TF sitting on a side table than some meaningless vase with flowers, etc. The same thing with artwork, all the artwork in my house is TF artwork. I also like to surround myself with what makes me happy and I have so much TF stuff now that going with any other decorating theme would be counterproductive.

As far as colletions go though, if I had to get rid of the TF toys or TF comics, I'd get rid of the toys. When it comes to collecting the comics, it is for the purpose of building a library I can enjoy for the rest of my life.

I started collectin TF when I was like 14. I never did have a lot of the toys, but I have most of the Marvel comics, some of the British ones, and some other misc comics. After my fan letter was printed in TF #37 (I think it's 37...), I had a lot of pen pals. One of them gave me Optimus for my birthday - thanks Michael if you're still out there!

Since the movies came out, I've been hooked again. Re-read all of the comics, tinkered with my toys (my toy collection is so small it fits in a shoebox). My husband told me I was acting like a 13 year old boy. But, makes me feel young. I've been trying to get back into all the storylines lately - pretty dizzying and I'm spending a lot of money.

I collect because it's an escape from the ordinary.

LOL That's probably what my husband thinks too. Good thing for me he's also in to TF and to a lesser extent GIJoe. Never grow up, never grow old, that's been working for me for the last 29 years anyway.

Oh, if only mine was into TF...hmmmm, that'd be great. Nah, he's into filling up the garage with old Harleys and greasy bike parts, which is kinda cool, but I have no room in there for my Jeep anymore. Plus, I've never run into a $12,000 TF anything!

Huh, so by buying more TF stuff, I'm actually saving us money! That's great news!

I collect tfs because sometimes certain aspects of being an adult can suck, there is always the goodness that Tfs are. They are one of the things that bring me happiness and nostalgia.

It's a great excuse for buying toys as a 26 year old :P

It's also a great excuse for when you're caught playing with them "Uhhhhh I was positioning them to reenact a seen from the movie".

Also, being a Dad is a great way to play with legos again!!!

Like most others here, I collect for personal enjoyment. I could try to justify my hobby with a lot of different things but I am at a point in my life where I want to simply be honest with myself. The truth is, I enjoy toys/action figures/models and other things like comic books and video games. My hobby isn't harmful to others and it hasn't gone out of control(yet...though my wallet would disagree).

I think I started 'collecting' because my parents did. Not toys--my parents collect weird stuff like fountain pens, and silver and chinese 'lotus' shoes. It just seemed that every weekend as a kid we'd haunt antique malls and junk shops looking for The Find! I guess it rubbed off--mostly the thrill you get when you find something completely unexpected.

I didn't collect much as a kid, though--we were always looking for my parent's stuff. And (this is probably TMI but) we didn't have a lot of toys growing up--I remember Star Wars figures and that's really about it. (It's not that we were desperately poor--my parents thought cheap plastic was junk and refused to spend money on something we'd lose interest in after a few hours/days/weeks--that was their thought process).

So to me collecting TFs is a little of both: I get the thrill of the hunt (I kind of like it when a figure eludes me for a while), and I get something I really didn't have as a kid. Yay!

Plus, it confuses the crap out of my students when they come into my office.

HK, you think they'd get the hint that my bookshelf is loaded with Decepticons?

Transformers were something I never outgrew completely. I certainly stopped playing with them after a point, and my interest comes in waves today, but I never gave it up. Deep down I guess it's about capturing that part of my childhood. Something else that drove me was wanting new and improved versions of my favorite figures. I very much wanted TFs that resembled the cartoon. And after some 20 years, my patience has paid off :-B

I love robots. I take part in amateur lego robot competitions whenever I get the chance, and I'm a big believer in the space program and robot technology.

I also grew up with our family having to live with our grandmother and the only toys I had were either generic ones from the dollar store or Happy Meal toys. I've gotten myself to a point where after paying off my car, paying my bills, and even donating to the occasional charity (I work with charities) I can finally afford the toys that some of my friends had when they were kids.

Lets face it, some of these things are just downright cool and I love the movie verse transformers for how complex they are.

The engineering of the toys has long fascinated me. These days, I can simulate most toys in my head, but there's something deeply satisfying about having a real-world physical version of a design to fiddle with. For want of a better phrase, it validates the concept.

Sometimes the only way to really prove that something would work as an actual toy is to, well, build it and see.

For me, it is the excitement of finally having a Tf to call my own (most of the Tfs we had were my older brother's, though I still got to play with them) and having the chance to own a cartoon accurate one to boot :P

What I have now are all Decepticons, and mostly MP Seekers (the two exceptions being MP Megatron and Movie Barricade.) 8)

I like to use them as artist modals for drawing also.

i'm anal about completion, thus when I was young I didnt' care about haveing all them I just wanted some (dad was a truck driver so Optimus Prime was a must) but I got out of toy stage for a long time and got rid of my toys. It wasn't until Masterpiece Prime blew my mind at wal mart but still felt way behind on so I never collected them. The movie and animated was a fresh start with new molds, toys and it's own new line. I haven't stopped collecting all movie, crossovers and animated since. Also the birth of my son ( Sam ) in 2005 , I knew he would appreciate the toys. He loves them so much and it means the world to me knowing one day his daddy was cool enough to buy and keep a great collection in tact to give to him. (n babu brother!) He's said since he was 1 all transformers were know as bumblebee's (Sam's guardian in movie lol ) now he know bunches of them! He says OP-MAS for Optimus Prime.

It's all about my boys and me having some fun stuff to play with them and collect. Thank you hasbro/takara. Greatest toys ever!

I used to think a toy that is a Truck and turns into a giant robot with guns! AMAZING!
still do ! kid at heart as we all r!

I collect because they're beautiful and also becaues I'm OCD. (I can't stop I have a shopping compulsion!) No when I think about it the first TF I bought, Waspinator, was because I really really loved the character. I had never thought about myself as buying a transformer before.
