Renaming TFs

Hey,

Just throwing this out of curiosity. Example, new warbot Defender aka Springer, for those of you who have the classics set Springer and Ratbat. Have you thought of moving that Springer out of your collection, displaying him some place differently, or renaming him so that he may stay right where he is. A while back there was a figure out named Wingblade, a TRU exclusive redeco of Wing Saber. He didn't interest me so I didn't get him. I have opted to rename my classics Springer, Wingblade. I'm sure there are plenty of you who don't put this much thought into your collection but, for those of you who do SOUND off please.
Thanks

A lot of people repurpose figures. Hell, most of the shattered glass figures are repurposed figures from other lines

Nevermind. I realize a lot of collectors with a shattered glass collection do this. I was wondering for those who don't have a shattered glass collection, like myself, their take on this. just trying to start some chatter. Thought maybe more people ponder this than just me. Sorry. Dumb topic I guess.

I've been looking for a spot to bring this up. Recently I've repurposed Legends Sideways(ROTF) as Runnabout, to go along with Legends Runamuck(from the Target Exclusive Straightaway Shootout five pack).

It works out pretty well I think.

I tend to do this alot recently, as TF names sort of slide into the toilet. Grindor? Acid Storm? Crosswise? Sideways?
If there's a parallel to another character, like the Walmart Skyfall, clearly Skyjack from G2, then I just go with that name. Like if a figure resembles an earlier one or a better character than "Crosswise" then I'l go with that. With the proliferation of the same characters again and again (Optimus, Megatron, until just recently the Combaticons and Constructicons) I've been known to give them different names so as to have a collection that doens't really need to acknowledge different univrses or continuities. Remember a few years back, like when the original Universe line was going alongside Energon, and we got (yeah, I know, but for all intent, purpose and common sense) Energon Devestator and then Universe repainted every construction vehicle green and repacked it as Devestator related?

Some of my most obvious ones:

RID Scourge = Darkside (inspired by Twisted Metal game)
Energon Downshift = Wheeljack (that's my Classics WJ)
Armada Wheeljack = Sideswipe
Armada Sideswipe = Nightbeat
Universe Darkmount = Lord Straxxus
Big Convoy = Maximus Primal

That's all I can think of for now.

As a kid, I had no idea the names of the first Transformers I had other than Optimus Prime. These were the Powermaster and Headmaster era so I had no cartoon to refer to and didn't read the comics at the time.

I renamed Darkwing as Starscream and Hosehead as Inferno.

Years later I never learned the name of the Micromasters I had. I remember calling these guys Cliffjumper, Bumblebee, Mirage, and Wheeljack.

Hell, I specifically look for characters to "fill roles" in my collection...I recently managed to acquire the four Bumblebee-model TFA Activators and dubbed them Chase (Cliffjumper), Searchlight (Patrol Bumblebee, with a little black paint customizing), Bumper (Battlefield Bumblebee), and Hubcap (original Bumblebee with a red face). I try to stick with ones I don't have to customize (TFA Arcee is a close enough match for G1 Arcee for my tastes) or only have to customize a little (the Searchlight and Hubcap mods I mentioned), but sometimes if there's no appropriate stand-in to repurpose I'll either see if Reprolabels has something usable (like the '07 Stockade-to-Trailbreaker set) or just whip out the paint and tools myself.

I also confess, though, that I like to take figures that are of a character that either already has one or more toys (like the infinite legion of Bumblebees) or no real profile and make my own OC out of them, like Universe version of BW Silverbolt into his Shattered Glass counterpart, or Energon Towline into a Hunter S. Thompson/Spider Robinson-type named "Burnout" (with Real Gear Night Beat 7 as his "filthy assistant" and camera-bot, Booster, whose name is taken from the 'con version of the fig BTW).

War Within Thrust - Pre-Beast/G1 Terrorsaur

Oversized KO Robotmasters Wingstun - Pre-Beast/G1 Waspinator

Had to do these after I got Device Label Tigatron who I see as G1 Tigatron.

Thrust and Terrorsaur both have the cowardly braggard personality so it's not a stretch to imagine they could even be the same character. The War Within toy's colour scheme reminds me of cartoon Terrorsaur too. I don't imagine he was called Terrorsaur on Cybertron either.

Wingstun's mold was used for the Botcon pre-Beast Waspinator and the have simialr colour schemes. As with Terrorsaur, I don't imagine Waspinator was so named on Cybertron. Since there's no real fiction for Wingstun, though we know Robotmasters was set in the G1-verse, it's not impossible that they could be the same character. They've both even worked for Beast Wars Megatron.

my Target exclusive Shadow Striker is now my only Shattered Glass figure, SG Wheelie. I like the idea of Wheelie as a SG character, since I imagine he's such a total beast.

Yeah, I do this ALL the time. I have some repurposed characters, and some new characters all together.

Repurposed:
E-Sharkticon=Finback
Superlink Shadowhawk Cosmos + E Command Ravage=Garbroil and Howlback
Cyb Crossiwse=Stepper
Chevey Aveo=Windcharger

Updated BW Predacons: these are the same sparks from the BW series.
BM Jetstorm=Waspinator
Movie Wreckage=Dinobot
ROTF Thrust=Terrorsaur (but I like the Titanium Thrust idea better now that I see it)
RiD Megabolt=Tarantulus (looking for Beast War Returns Megatron for this though)

led by Darksyde=AKA Botcon Darksyde Megatron

New characters:
Clss US Cyclonus=Armada <-- that's the character's name
Sam's Club Yellow RiD Prime=Solaris Prime
Target exclusive Dirge and US voyagerclass Starscream=Apex n Zenith

I could go on, but ya get the idea.

Its not a rename, but i consider Animated Swindle to be my classics swindle (since I refuse to pay the kinda money for the awesome 3rd party swindle, it'll have to do)

I refer to my:
Cybertron Prime as Galaxy Convoy
Cybertron Scrapmetal (red) as Rumble
GalaxyForce Ramble (blue) as Frenzy
Cybertron Downshift as Wheeljack
ROTF Deadlift as Spoons
Booster X-10 as Laserbeak
plus a bunch of mini-cons get go-bot names.

on the reverse side I refer to Universe Treadbolt as Stirling or the "Blue Max Special".

A few G1 Scourges re-purposed as Sweeps (no brainer), and some extra BM Strikas and Obsidians to serve as drones.

I also remember back during the BM line, I planned to buy several of the Deluxe Jetstorms to use as Aero Drones for the Ultra Jetstorm. This was before I found the "Sonic Attack Jet" figure.
