Transformers and currrency

In Transformers they use energon cubes as currency, but this confuses me because it is both thier energy source and thier money system. How does this work?

Same way people used livestock, tobacco, salt, ect for centuries in exchange for goods. metals arent the only form of currency.

Yeah, it's probably more of a barter system than a monetary one.
