TF relatives question

In the there have several Transformers from G1 and I later on, like on Animated that, that have been relatives like Prowl, Side Burn, and X-Brawn. My question how can this be? How can they be considered siblings from our understanding? Was this answered in any of the continuity stories?

At least in the case of the G1 comics I rember Sunstreaker and Sideswipe actually have the same spark, it just split in two. I'm not so sure about Animated ect. but I'm sure the wiki explains it better than I could.
