The time has come for new heroes

So I was looking through my collection today, browsing through my 20+ Primes, my half dozen grimlocks, and assorted prowls when I started thinking, when will has/tak do a new series featuring a new core group?

Now I know you're probably "thinking, he's out of his freaking mind!" But just hear me out for a minute. Every new series that comes out feaures an Optimus, a megatron, and generally a whole alt-reality of the same characters. Yes, there are a few newbies, i.e.: Hot Shot, Bulkhead, but essentially its an identical cast.

Don't give me wrong, bots like Optimus were childhood heroes to me and I still can't enough of them, but I loved it back in the day when new characters took center stage.

Some examples: 3rd season of of G1, Rodimus, Ultra Magnus, Arcee, Springer, Kup, Cyclonus, Scourge, the Quints were the focal point of the show with lesser characters from the first 2 seasons filling in a lot of the blanks. Japan took it a step further in their later seasons bringing us the Overload and Metalhalk in Masterforce (just to name a few) and really brought us a whole new core in Victory/Zone (my fave japanese series...go brestforce!)

Other examples: Dreamwave's ongoing sidelined Prime for the first while in their ongoing and gave us some great stories focused around Sunstorm. War within did the same. On the IDW front, Last stand of the Wreckers just gave us months of happy geekdom using characters that had been a mere after thought for over decade. Lets not forget everyones favorite samurai turncoat drift.

Bottom line, I would love to see a series start with completely new characters. Maybe a group of bots and cons that are light years from cybertron (space bridge incident perhaps?) I'm ready for some new heroes to forge a place in my geeky heart next to Starscream, Jazz, Bumblebee and the rest.

Think I'm on to something? Think I'm full of crap? Feel free to reply. I wanna know what you all think. :KREMZEEK:

I'd like to see some of the Japanese characters put into a new series maybe set during the earlier ages of cybertron (I liked how they hinted at the Japanese characters being ancient Transformers in the War Within). I think modern versions of the Japanese toys would also be an interesting bit of variety.

Well you're not really onto anything considering a number of us have been hoping for that sort of thing for ages. :P

If they're worried about copyright issues (ie, keeping names in use so they're preserved) they can still use the characters as background characters.

Animated attempted it. They weren't the high ranking bots we're normally accustomed to, they were just a repair crew who got thrown in the deep end.

And kids not connecting with/associating new characters? Whatever, give the kids some credit.

There really is no reason why it can't happen, it seemed to work pretty well for Beast Wars after all.

One thing I liked about about beast wars was it established itself and the new cast before bringing in too much of the old school (Ravage, Starscream, Optimus). It was able to build its own identity all while still fitting fairly well into the overall continuity.

After I wrote the first post I looked at the pics of the powered core combiners at botcon. I see a lot of potential in the line to just what I was saying. The bios mention Prime and Megatron, but none of them are old characters. Here's hoping...

For the record, I know I'm not the only one to think about this, but i have seen/heard/read anyone else talk about it. Regardless, its a discussion I'd like to have. So to take this one step foward, any ideas for a new series with completely new characters?

I've always held onto the idea of a small group of grunts fighting on the front line at the height of the great war.

New recruits, hardened soldiers, mid-tier Commanders, that sort of thing. With the big names like Prime and Megatron as characters that are spoken of but rarely seen (they have to pop up now and then)

How about a animated wreckers series?

I do admit I would love to see a more gritty anime transformer series (I'd be happy with occasional hour long movie releases) with some great effects thrown in, something to appeal to older fans.

here here

no primes
no megas or galvas or starscreams or bumblebees or rodimi or prowls

a whole new ball of wax involving a group of bots whom have never even heard of those guys.

after a thousand more homages

I have been on this idea for quite some time. I definitely do think we need a lil change now and then. Especially with Transformers in their peak again, and seeing how Hasbro can carry multiple TF lines at once, now should be the time to intro something new. Buuut I'm definitely not going to be holding my breath!

Are you out of your freaking mind!

That is true. I would love to see a new series with a new core group as well. I don't think they want to take the risk though that is why we see the same faces and names.
