Most transformers have a predictable alt mode that follows them around from series to series. Optimus-Semi Truck,Starscream-Fighter Jet. But megatron is anything from predictable in this way.

So I ask you, what is Megatron's most common alt mode?

His most common one has to be a tank, out of necessity. Since toy laws are really iffy about anything resembling a real firearm, his iconic gun form can't be used as we'd like. The futuristic jet or an other type of aircraft is gaining in popularity however.

The Tank form appeared in these series:
- Generation 2 (2 times)
- Classics into Generations (3 times)
- Armada
- Revenge of the Fallen
- Animated (as planned for the canceled Season 4)

And the aircraft appeared in:
- Machine Wars
- Robots in Disguise
- Energon
- Cybertron
- 2007 Movie
- Animated
- Prime

I think you're looking at the wrong sode of this. Like several others, Megatron's orginal alt mode can't be done anymore. This resulted in an array of different transformations. What you're looking for is in the botmode, buckethead, huge gun, broad chest... That's where the similarities are.
