I need to buy something that will allow me to go on xbox live and still be able to surf the web at the same time that will connect my cable modem to both devices without too much hassle.

It doesnt have to be wireless as everything is connected via ethernet.

We bought a Belkin 5-port Switch but i cant seem to get it to allow the xbox360 to gain an ip address for Live access.

Is this just because we need a router and not a switch?

Yeah, you need a router, not a switch. Doesn't matter if it's D-Link or Linksys or whatever. Any one will do. I got 2 PCs, my Wii and 360, and occationally my DS, on 1 4-port router!
