Ok, before beign flamed, you have to understand that i never played Final Fantasy VII.

What make Sephiroth so "cool" and "popular"?

All i saw of this guy is limited to the fight in Advent Children. I see he's strong and fast, not to mention the horribly oversized sword that give him a range of DOOM!
The problem is..i saw hundred of superhuman cracter. This guy is no different. He got nothing "original" or "amazing"...

I dunno, maybe if had some more "unique" power. but..no! This guy is generic as hell, yet everyday i see thing like "OMG SPEHIROTH SO COOL 1!1!!"

Hmm, let me think about it....

He did some cool things in the FF VII game, and did something real nasty things to the characters, like psychologicly mess with Cloud, hurt Tifa, etc. And I think he had a pretty strong backstory too(it's been a LONG time since I played VII).

Also, and this is a spoiler, but also practicly common knowledge by now, he killed Aeris/Aerith.

Rather than calling himself evil, as you might expect from a clichéd villain, Sephiroth thinks he's doing the right thing. To him, humans are to be exterminated, and the Planet rightfully belongs to him.

Also, he killed the love-interest. That has, for a long time, been a big No-No in terms of villainy; the hero SAVES the girl, right in the nick of time. Instead, Sephiroth comes down and freakin' IMPALES the girl, before the hero can do anything.

Also, he has a pretty cool design: Long silver hair, two pauldrons, black trench coat, and the daikatana.

He had a cool look and weapon, but I was never an uber-fan. I admit he was a cool character (although his angst over his mother made him more whiny than cloud at points). Personally, I always preferred Kefka from FFVI over Sephiroth.

True, even I don't agree he's the best. But I guess he's considered one of the best.

Oh yeah, Sepiroth almost killed the planet. A few other bad guys have done that too, but not with a giant meteor. He also unleashed some super powerful giant robots too boot, the Weapons. Heck, I loved the weapons so much I created a Final Fantasy fan-fic that had a bunch of smaller versions as generic soldiers, and there was also one that was the size of the Weapons from VII, which I based on the Weapon that attacked Junon("Opal"). One of the best cut-scenes EVER!

This helps too:

The Midgar Zolom(the giant snake) may be a total weakling later in the game, but when you see that scene, it's still a pretty powerful enemy.

I enjoyed Sephy's insane plot to become a god, but in truth he never made it as far as Kefka. The only thing going for him was the fact that he had a large sword, but that's all he had. In truth he was boring compared to Golbez, but still more fearsome than Seymour from FFX. Seymour... who names a villan Seymour? Come on...

As much as people think of Sephiroth as a villain he is more a victim of circumstance.

Spoilers

Sephiroth was created using gene splicing from alien DNA called Jenova with the rest of the Soldiers, but he was always a bit different. They hid all of this from him and when he found out he lost it and tried to follow in his 'mother's' footsteps. He's an interesting character and really doesn't follow the bad guy modl, in that he felt he was betrayed and is doing what he feels must be done after what Shin-ra and the world had done to him and his 'family'. Then there's the cool get up and weaponry on top of it. He's this great tragic villain with a great backstory and history that resonates and is pretty powerful stuff. I mean my wife, when you're in the village and see the cutscene where Sephiroth finds all of this out and he ends up burning down the village and he's walkign through the flames, the first words that came out of her mouth was 'Poor Sephiroth!' Never mind that he's destroying this village and killing all these people, but why he's doing it. That is what makes him so popular methinks. It's not just the sword and the hair.

Sephiroth is kewl because she's emo and pretty. Take it off, baby!

...oh, what? Sephiroth is a guy? WTF?

Sephiroth was definitely driven to the edge of sanity (and promptly kicked off of it) in the JENOVA experiment, but nothing (and I absolutely mean *NOTHING*) in Final Fantasy VII is as creepy-ass as the entire second disc when Cloud is stuck in that wheelchair making creaking noises as he sits up and collapses. I had to play all of Disc2 in one day just to get through it all.
