......and hit the 'ON' button?
I hear the Wii Remote jackets power it up as well, so still get those.

Ah, the nightmare of every man. You get into that special romantic mood, dim down the lights and prepare for some personal quality time with your lady... Only to find out that your Wii refuses service.
Here's my suggestion:
Fix for broken Wii

Check the fuse in the plug. Check the transformer () in the lead.
If you've plugged it in and everything has been set to 'go', and the light is black, then the Wii isn't receiving power at all.
Funny thing is, my light is currently yellow.

You connected to the Intraweb?
Because my light has always been yellow when the Wii is in standby mode and the net connection working.

You need to chill man. There is no reason to link the wiki article for Viagra like you just did.
The kid is worried and you did not help his situation.

If you haven't done so already, you should call Nintendo's Customer Service or Tech Support line. That would be a much better place to get answers than here.
And in other news:
wikipedia wrote:Technical issues
The first firmware update via WiiConnect24 caused a very small portion of units to become completely unusable. This forced users to either send their units to Nintendo for repairs (if they wished to retain their saved data) or exchange it for a free replacement.
Did you do that firmware update recently?

definately call nintendo. I'm no expert when it comes to wii's but it sounds like the firmware update fried your wii(as Dark Zarak said). Besides, they may be able to better troubleshoot the issue.

This is the only technical issue with the Wii I could find.
Call Nintendo man. If I were you, this would be the last place I'd look for answers. Call Nintendo and then post on here what they said and how you're gonna fix it.

sounds like the update nuked your Wii. Nothing but sending it off to Nintendo and a bit o' time will solve this problem.

It's always something simple isn't it? Was it a lightning storm, or just rain?

there should be a Nintendo warrenty hotline number in your instruction book to the Wii. Should have a picture of Mario holding a wrench or something like that.
It could just be the adapter but why waste the money when you could get it fixed for free?

My condolences for your sense of humour
Also, the kid should be asking nintendo tech support instead of some forum in the middle of internet nowhere.

Yep, but last time I was on the light was orange.
Nothing's wrong with my Wii at all though.
I just has a colourful personality

Always unplug electrical equipment during a lightning storm if you wanna avoid damaging the stuff.
Even the mighty Wii can be hindered by high-voltage electricity.
