Sci-Fi Online MMORPG suggestions?

I've been playing World of Warcraft for a very long time... But I'm getting kinda bored of it (kinda). I would really rather play a onling game thats more sci-fi. And NO NOT STAR WARS GALAXY.

If you guys have played Freelancer before, maybe something like that. Except you can actually walk around the planet you land on. Not just be stuck in yer ship, and only come out when ya need to buy something.

I need some spaceship flying LURV! and some 1st person, Quake 4 type shooting fun if available. : ) Any suggestions?

You might like EVE Online - they're working on putting planet and spacestation environments in where you can leave you ship. It's not a bad game anyway. Otherwise, wait a few years for the Star Trek MMO that is probably going to get cancelled.

You can always try Star Wars Battlefront II if youre just looking for action. The space dog-fighting is a lot of fun.

Well Lord of the Rings is probably the next best thing to WoW ATM. There's plenty of content to last for several months until the first full expansion comes out, plus balanced job classes, player housing, crafting, and a pretty decent community. Then there's mini-expansions which add in more content, and areas for your character to explore every 2-3 months or so. About the only weakness of the game is PvP and the fact you can't have a main character being an Orc, Uruk-hai, Goblin, etc. there is monster play but it's rather limited and the fact you start lvl 50 kind of takes away from any sense of accomplishment of building up your own charatcer in the service of Sauron.

Actually, my dad plays that. And he absolutely HATES WoW.

Currently, you can only go between the Shire and the Misty Mountains, but to be fair, that area is HUGE! An I mean Peter Jackson huge. (Fat joke? Reference to the epicness of LotR? YOU Decide!)

But I have no doubt that they WILL at some point make everything in Middle-Earth playable (Outside Middle-Earth, while it would be awesome, is a little bit too much, considering the size of the map as it currently is), and along with that, release Orcs and variations of Orcs (Goblins, Uruk-Hai, etc) and whatever else Sauron had control of, but I can't remember because I haven't read LotR in years.

Of course, LotR is probably even less-sci-fi that WoW. Anyone else have any suggestions?

Well, BioWare MIGHT be making a new Star Wars MMO. MAYBE! No one knows for sure.

Also, there's the Matrix Online.

ah ha! new SW MMO could be good. I've heard bad things about Galaxies, but still considered it. Mostly play SWBF2 to get my SW gaming fix though I would love to be able to do more than just shoot at people randomly running and jumping about back and forwards using sniper rifles for close combat.

The rest of Middle Earth will be made available through seperate expansions bought through retailer. This has been stated but will come gradually. And we don't want to rush them either. We'll probably see the rest of Eariador added before the first expansion comes out. If you look at the maps you'll see there's still plenty more of Eriador to release but going no further south than Enedwaith. I'm willing to bet we won't be going any further east until all the Rhovanion content is made. My understanding is they intend to do Rohan next. Still I imagine the next expansion will most likely be dealing with the threat of Saruman.

As for the lands outside ME, it's been stated they can't do them because the Tolkien family retains exclusive rights to all those fictional lands and they aren't going to budge. So don't count on Valinor, Beriland ruins, Numenor ruins, etc, being in the game.

As for a KOTOR MMO, there have been rumors floating around said MMO could be in planning but I think everyone's on the rocks following the disaster SOE made SWG into. If they do make a Star Wars MMO based in the Sith Wars era I don't think it should be a KOTOR title but a seperate title, thus allowing more creative freedom wiht some references to past Jeid and Sith Lords even Revan and Malak. I saw some of the worst players in SWG, even the boards (Imperial players triyng to throw out suggestions that would horribly put the game out of balance in their favor and they never cared.)

If one is made, SOE should not be allowed anywhere near it. They'll rush through production, not even consider Beta (they only did it because they knew the engine would not work wihtout debugging), change the battle system several times without considering their past mistakes. Severely cut back on the worlds planned ofr release. What is it? Still 12, 13 worlds. Leave a bunch of content broken. Have lousy customer service Reps. Choose a space engine where a bullseye will not guarentee a direct hit. At best the whole thing would be a SWG clone set in another time period and hit with "fanservice" involving ships that shouldn't be there.

I never said it was KotOR.

Even so, it's only a rumor. About the time it was announced that SOE lost the Galaxies license, Bioware announced that they were making an MMO.

Matrix Online I would recommend if you like the movies and are really in to it. There's an ongoing story in it that players directly take part in written by the Wachowski Bros.

What you're looking for is PlanetSide. MMOFPS at its best, thus far. Its Sci-Fi but obviously from the name you cna't go into space despite having a ton of ship class things like the galaxies and Mosquitoes. Its the only thing SOE did right between Galaxies downgrade and buying the Matrix Online.

huh, well i'm hopefully going to be able to try out the EVE online trial. So thats that.

Star Wars Galaxies..... I haven't many good things about it. ; \ And it's probably also cuz i'm biased towards Star Trek. (trekky, yey!) But that doesn't mean I'd play a ORPG of it. XD I can't really imagine how they'd pull it off, but wtv. It'd be nice if they could.

LoTR... I heard that game takes up ALOT of computer power. ;o; My poor PC is struggling to play Sims 2 happily. lol. I need a game for my Mac, if available. But beggers can't be choosers (much). I just need to wait for my computer to crash, and then I'll get to free up some space. ; )

Anybody else suggest EVE online for sci-fi online gaming?

Tabula Rasa is a new sci-fi MMORPG currently on pre-order. I don't know anything else about it but my fiancee recommends it. It does look quite impressive I must say. But I'm too cheap to pay for MMORPGs.

I think it's a monthly subscription yes. For that kind of money I could buy a new game every month rather than go through the level grind month after month.

There's always Guild Wars which has no monthly fee...and it quite awesome in its own

I played guild wars for over a year but got tired of it once I couldn't get any better equipment. It's a fine "domething to do in between other MMO's" but once you hit the level cap and get the best equipment it starts getting boring.

Snipe: LOTRO works fine as long as you meet minimum requirements and don't try to boost up the graphics without the needed upgrades. If you're having problems with Sims 2, you may need an upgrade or a new computer.
