Thus far the series has become something of a scrolling beat-em-up with a couple of in-combat gimmicks, and soem cut-scenes.
I appreciate that we all love it for the intricate storylines, and the rich characters, and the magnificent voice acting, but for it to be a really commercially viable product it needs to sell more copies, and to do that, it needs a wider appeal.
Rightly, or wrongly, that means more of a focus on the elements that will boost the typical review score from 07/10 to 09/10 or 10/10.
This is all true, actually. The story is wonderful but the gameplay is a little lame.
Soul Reaver 1 was pretty much the last we saw of decent puzzles. Soul Reaver 2 focused on less logical means to complete a goal and Blood Omen 2 was a joke in terms of puzzles. Defiance was a little more intelligent, but only a little.
I can't think of what else it would need. Something that requires skill to accomplish, some button-hammering techniques or something. I don't know.
Either way, I think the series could do with a good, definite closing. Kain needs to get it right!
