Are we allowed to talk about Homebrew here?

I'm just wondering, cos I know its OBVIOUSLY against the rules to talk about copying games and whatnot, but I'm wondering if we're allowed to talk about the Homebrew hacks for the PSP.

For those that don't know, Homebrew are programs that explot unsigned code in the PSP (which Sony deal with in later firmware/patches) allowing you to play full games you can obtain online (have I said too much?).

However, it also allows you to run other homebrew applications which aren't so.. illegal. Such as turning your PSP into a GPS system.

That in mind, are we allowed to talk about it here?

I don't think homebrew in itself infringes upon any copyrights. As long as the homebrew in question doesn't make use of any registered intellectual property it would not be illegal unless someone decides to outlaw creativity.

Keeping homebrew out of the PSP by force is just Sony being stingy, and allowing it would be the same as Microsoft issuing a statement saying: "Don't use windows! Use a free alternative!"

Well thats cool an all, I get you. But I still want to know if we're allowed to talk about it here :P I've never seen it discussed or anything, so...

Good gawd. I'm sure there is a yes between the lines there somewhere. :P Or at least a "probably". But as I don't run the site, I can't give you a definitive answer. Just making my opinion heard.

i'm going to guess we can't since the the hacks required to use hombebrew on the ps2/psp can also be used for game pirating.

However i am interested in hearing more about this psp-gps...so feel free to tell me more via pm or until this thread gets locked.

Hehe, yeah, a likely outcome.

Wikipedia.org wrote:The GPS receiver features support for GPS-enabled games such as a projected re-release or update of Hot Shot Golf, as well as Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. The GPS Receiver went on sale in Japan December 7, 2006 for ¥6,000 (approximately $50 USD), and is set for release in Europe under the name Go!Explore in 2008.

Both the Camera and GPS peripherals have been confirmed for the U.S. but no date has been stated.

That's the Official GPS attatchment though. The Homebrew one... well I don't know if I can talk about that, do I? :P

I can't see there would be a problem with talking about homebrew unless you go about giving detailed instructions on how to flash the hacked firmware and install the UMD loader.

But there are dedicated sites that do that anyway, why would you do it here?

Talking about legitimate legal homebrew is not objectionable in any way. Being forbidden to talk about homebrew itself is ludicrous. I can't see any of the mods penalizing you for it.

Talk about it all you want. Just don't mention how or where to locate information to do the actual hacking.
