The wii code is just for contacting between othere wiis, the friend code is for seperate games, as for which game you want it really depends on your intrests and in my opinion you could get board of them fast if you don't play with friends

I've heard a lot of good things about both Mario Kart and Brawl. And since Wii's online play is free...

Wii codes are console specific. Essentially it's a serial number for your wii that Nintendo uses to identify your unit for messaging and upgrade purposes.
As for friend codes, not a clue how they're generated but essentially they're game-specific and assigned when you first load a new game and are linked to your wii (which makes me wonder why they don't just use the wii code)

Brawl is awesome!

Keep in mind, though, that I am not impartial since Smash is already my favorite game series.

However, the Subspace Emissary, Classic and All-star, Events, Boss Battles, and Stadium gives thousands of hours of solo game time without even going into Brawl and fighting against friends.

Haven't played MarioKart Wii yet, but I'd be surprised if it is better than Brawl or more fun.

brawl and kart are awsome..brawl is a great fighting game and kart is a great racing game..its hard to compare the 2 and since there different kinda games...
both are worth buying, tons of replay value, tons to unlock, multi players and online..you cant ask for more.

I'd also keep your eye out for Red Steel two in the future. It's supposed to be supporting a full online mode.

I don't know about connection problems, but if you look in your friends list, your own friend number should be there too.

Best of luck!

I've had my Wii for almost a year now, and still haven't done any on-line gaming on it. Its connected wirelessly to my router, but I've only used it for virtual console and system updates. I can't answer that question but I can tell you plenty to pick up for your Wii:

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Metroid Prime 3
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Paper Mario
Super Smash Bros Brawl
Wii Zapper w/ Link's crossbow training
Mario Kart Wii
Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games

But yes your choices of Smash Bros. and Mario Kart are very good choices for your first games!
