Anyone ever heard this game called "Metal Gear Solid"?

I think it's about snakes and chemistry or something. Apparently there's a Metal Gear Solid 4 coming out soon so it must be popular. All kidding aside, I've never played any of the games, but I've recently been thinking of trying it. I've thought of getting Twin Snakes. Seems like a good place to start. But will I like it. I've never played a stealth game other than Splinter Cell, and I hated that. So is it any good?

Metal Gear is absolutely NOTHING like Splinter Cell. As long as you're careful, you may never ever get caught. In fact, most of the time, to get the alarm to go down, (Or never go off) all you have to do is shoot the guy or guys who saw you.

The games are spectacular. MGS2 might need a couple of run-throughs before you fully understand what they're saying, but all the games are awesome.

If you're getting the games, get MGS: Twin Snakes for Gamecube, and MGS2: Sons of Liberty and MGS3: Subsistence (The expansion of MGS: Snake Eater) for PS2. If you have a PSP, get Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, which is a sequel to MGS3.

Subsistence also has the updates of Metal Gear 1 and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, which were NES games that explain the vast majority of what they're talking about in all of the games.

I wouldn't bother with the Acid games, since those are side-stories, and not nearly as good.

Technically, they were MSX games  . The NES version of Metal Gear is pretty different(I have it, but never did beat it, and can't think of any major changes right off hand), and it's sequal "Snakes Revenge" is completely unnofficial, and has been likened to a top-down Contra. Don't really see how though.

Yeah, MGS is a classic game, but I prefer the PS1 version because A. it's the version I fell in love with. B. because I fell in love with the original, I'm not too fond of the new voice-work in Twin Snakes(Mei Ling lost her extremely strong accent). C. Some of the cutscenes have been reworked a bit too much, and I think Snake was very ninja-like in a few of them(it's been a while since I played it, once through). D. Twin Snakes just feels easier on normal. E. The "continue" cries are so totally cheesy and awsome! Particularly Mei Ling: "Snake, no, get up, Snake, Snaaaake...". then there's the classic "SNNNNNNNAAAAAAKKKKEEEE!"

Oh, and MGS 3 is my personal favorite. You don't have radar, but it can be very exciting sneaking through the bushes successfully. The food system is also pretty neat, and it's nice not having to worry about rations to refill your health(save for in boss-battles, then I miss them a little). Speaking of Boss battles, they are really cool. The only real annoyance factor is switching camo/healing your wounds.

Yeah, Vamp is really fruity. But he's voiced by Phil LaMarr!

(PS I know who you're referring too, Raiden's definitely not gay.)

Oh, yeah, I forgot about Vamp. But Raiden's like BW megatron, only reversed. In japan, he's straight. In America, well... It's questionable. Oh and just because Rose is pregnant doesn't mean that Raiden's the dad. Snake probably snuck off and did it, cus he's awesome like that.:P

MGS is my favourite VG series at the moment. snakes and chemistry? what the hell? I always like Sniper Wolf in Twin Snakes; interesting character. AND RAIDEN IS NOT GAY! WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!? Raiden is my fave char from MGS4. Althought the whole "Raiden is such a girl" joke never gets old.

MGS2 and 3 are awesome. They turned me onto those types of games. Probably the reason I have a PS2 (and probably will soon get a PS3) is because of MGS games.

MGS2 got a little preachy near the end, and the end music is cheezy, but if you look past that, the games are fun.

And MGS3 is cool. The only thing that would make these games cooler is an add-on like RE4 had with Mercenaries. :P And maybe someone can explain all these side games. MGS Substance? Acid? All I've got are 2 and 3 and I don't know how anything but MG1-2 and MGS1-4 fit into the series. For instance, what's the difference between MGS Substance and regular MGS2? What's MGS3 Subsistence got that MGS3 doesn't? What's MGS Twin Snakes?

In fact, this thread has inspired me to go replay one of those games once I get a shred of free time.

Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes is a remake of the original MGS, using graphics and gameplay elements from MGS2. It's also on gamecube.

MGS2: Substance is sort of an update to MGS2, but I didn't notice a difference, aside from the fact that Substance is the only one available on Xbox. The PS2 version of Substance contains a Tony Hawk styled skating game, taking place around the Big Shell. It has a really nice rock version of the game's theme.

MGS3: Subsistence is has a few differences; first of all, it uses a prototype to the camera that MGS4 uses. It also has nicer graphics, and comes with slightly updated versions of the original Metal Gear games.

Acid really has no place in the series. It's sort of a side-story, but with none of the characters or plot elements from the other games aside from Snake. It's an alternate universe, really. It's also a turn-based strategy game, with card battle elements.

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops is a sequel to Metal Gear Solid 3, and describes the formation of FOXHOUND, as well as giving a few insights to Big Boss motives, and how he was able to form Outer Heaven.

So a lot of these are add-ons to the original games? Should have picked them up instead of the regular game.

Not necessarily. Gameplay and story-wise, there's no difference between Sons of Liberty and Substance. Only extra stuff, and not even in the main game. I would suggest Subsistence over Snake Eater, even though the only real difference is improved graphics and camera. I'd also suggest Twin Snakes for Gamecube over the PS1 version.

And if you have a PSP, and you want the whole MGS story, Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops is something you should definitely get.

Well, I don't have a PSP, so I guess I'll have to miss that part of the story. :-( Ah, well. You win some, you lose some.

As a side note, has anyone gotten all the frogs in MGS3? I've gotten all so far, but now I'm at the hardest one in the game to get (according to a walkthrough) and I gotta say, they're right! It's in one of the scenes near the end when you're riding shotgun on Eva's motorcycle, so it's like a moving target (not really, but you're the one who's moving so it's jsut about as hard).

It's not that bad, MPO only provides a little bit of extra background into a lot of events, such as Big Boss meeting Gray Fox, the formation of FOXHOUND, and all of that. The game is barely mentioned at all in MGS4, and the only real piece of new information it gives is the year the Snakes were born.

I beat MGS4 last month and, well...Everything is tied up, and you won't be left with any questions, other than "Are they going to do another game, and who's gonna be in it?"

My only regret in not getting a PS3 is not being able to play MGS4. I loved the others of the main series and this one is getting astounding reviews. And the commercials make it look sooooo good.

Oh well. There's always ten years from now when we can probably pick up a PS3 for $25 and MGS4 for $10.
