In a previous thread I mentioned that there should be a traditional Final Fantasy style Transformers RPG(meaning turn-based combat like the first 10) made by square-enix. So I thought I'd make a topic where we could flesh that idea out a bit. Should It be based on G1 or IDW?(I vote IDW) Should you only play as Autobots, or should you be able to play as the Decepticons? Who should the playable characters be? What characters should appear at all? How could Transforming be applied to combat? I can't think of any more questions, and I'll tell you what i think but I'll wait for someone else to post first.

in my opinion if anyone made a game like that it would have to be more like FF tactics. As for who you could have in your party I'd say it would depend on what faction you chose.

First let me say Thank you Psycho Warrior.
Now like I said in my first post I think an IDW based story would work well. It could start with Stormbringer and end with Revelation, and maybe a few spotlights to. That setting really allows for ample opportunity to play as both Autobots and Decepticons. Transforming could of course be used to get around fast on the over-world map, but could also be applied to combat by way of a "transform attack" (ie. Hot Rod transforms into alt.mode and "drifts" into the enemy or Megatron transforms into gun-mode lands into a party-members hand and blasts away). Soundwave and Blaster could act as "Summoners" with their cassettes acting as there summons. As far as playable characters go they should vary based on what part of the story your in.

no, god no.
I could see more of an action rpg being suited for Transformers, but not the turn-based heavy on cinematics that is Final Fantasy.
Maybe something along the line of the Tales series, especially since it's free-roaming combat, they could actually make use of transforming.

While I do agree with you about the heavy cinematics, what about combat more like Chrono Trigger?

Still wouldn't work, Chrono Trigger was turn-based, only if you didn't attack they'd still keep going.
The best way would be to do ether an action RPG like Mass Effect or Fable, or an RPG along the lines of the Tales Of series, where upon hitting a monster you and your party are brought into an "arena" to fight the monsters you triggered, then you can run around attack them from a distance intercept monsters going towards the support characters etc.

IMO the best battle system for a Transformers game would be strategy turn based in the same vein as Langrisser, Super Robot Wars, and similar games, where the story unfolds during the course of battle with additional story scenes dispersed between them.
The ability to custom create your own Autobot or Decepticon commander for either campaign would be a must. But also give the option to play as established characters for those who wish to do so.
As previously stated, Transformation could be utilized to move about the battle map faster but at the expense of the ability to attack, Transformation of course should only be able to be done once and the cost should be a single turn.
So if you leave a weaker character like Bumblebee in his vehicle mode at the end of a turn and Starscream moves to attack him, being in vehicle mode will give him better defense/evade but at the expense of any return attacks.
Similarly, Starscream in vehicle mode would be hard to hit but if he really wants to take advantage of his best weaponry, he should be forced to hover/stand in robot mode, significantly reducing his ability to defend/evade.
This could be changed for characters with big hitting weaponry, Tanks for example. In order to use their most powerful attacks they would have to be in vehicle mode in order to access them, at significant cost to their avoid because they'd basically become big targets.
Needs some refining but I think that would be the kind of TF game I'd enjoy.

iv been thinking about this for a long time. and still dont have it completely fleshed out.
landscape:
what i was thinking is having large open areas, like transformers armada ps2. like, jungle, tundra, city, under water, space, and cyberton.
weapons and armor:
very customizable and upgradeable. and other gadgets like car boosters and rocket packs. night vision, heat vision.
heavily story driven. id love simon furman to write some chapters
combat system:
i decided on something like other war games like brother in arms or something. with the ability to command team mates. also, battle damage is very important to me.
teams
red team: prime, ironhide, sideswipe, hound, cliffjumper
stealth team: jazz, prawl, ratchet, sunstreaker, bumblebee
desepticons: megatron, soundwave, starscream and other seekers
every character has a special ability. for example, megatron turns into a gun for a second to release a giant blast and soundwave deploys minions.
hidden teams would be the dinobots and constructacons (love secrets)
speaking of secrets. other game modes like, a fighting game like soul calibur or something.
id have 3 sequels spinning in my head, first introducing the minibots and triple changers. second introducing combiners, and third introducing hotrod, ultra magnus and the rest of them.
this may never happen but i can dream

I personally don't think RPG or even Action-RPG/Adventure really suit the TF concept very well. For most characters, transforming would be a hindrance. In a turn-based world, transforming into a vehicle has no real advantage other than increasing your chance of escape (pedal to the metal) and for a tales style game, most vehicles would need a fairly large range to work with, which becomes a problem because suddenly these vehicles have a ranged advantage.
I think the best option for a TF game would be closer to an RTS type of game. With this option, transforming suddenly has advantages as being able to traverse terrain faster makes for better swarming or hit-and-run advantages but probably has the downside of less offense or agility/maneuverability when not in robot mode.
If this must be an RPG, my reccomendation would be something like Fire Emblem or Ogre battle, where the characters all work in a field of battle with turn based movements and attacks and range stats.

Has anyone tried out G1:Awakening yet? It's like 90% of all these concepts. Simplest description is a dumbed down FF Tactics, but still great for $6. The turn based play isn't too slow after you turn the animations off.

I played a hacked version of FF1 back in the day. It had Prime as the Warrior, Ratchet as the White Mage, Grimlock as something, Swoop as a theif and I think Hotrod was in there as well.
I also agree that a turn based game would be awesome.

So I drive Baby Ford to Toys R'Us in North Jackson, to get Holiday Shopping done. Well monkey could not handle the Bank note. She wants a George! So I am going to heist Final Fantasy from a Nebula in a package; complete box set Amazon; Christ! In time for the holidays.
