Glad to see Sony is finally making it official as well as a price drop at $299, and a bigger hard drive included. Maybe now the PS3 can be somewhat competative though at this point all I can see it doing is holding its own as Xbox 360 and Wii are too popular to overtake. But at the very least PS3 should survive the system war, and maybe Sony will stop loosing profit.

However upon checking out the PS3 slim in the IGN video, it really seems like the crapbox version of the PS3. The Sensor pad's are gone, and replaced with real buttons, the chrome trim is gone, the gloss black finish is gone, and my biggest disappointment, the Spiderman font "Playstation 3" logo on top of the system is gone and in its place a "PS3" logo similar to the PS2 and PSP logo. Course its all cosmetic changes, but the IMO the PS3 went from the best looking system to the ugliest. I felt different about the PS2, as I thought the Slim model actually was quite an upgrade in the looks department over the original big PS2. The model being released is the same piece o' crap shown in china 2 months ago, and I was really hoping that wasn't what we were getting.

But well I guess what do looks matter as long as the system performs. Honestly I have always felt the PS3 was the superior system, but its high price and shoddy on-line play have scared consumers away. That being said the On-line play still needs some work, but its a hell of a lot better than it was when the system was launched, and now at $299 you get a system and a blue-ray player, not too bad. Maybe Activision's threat was actually taken seriously?

Yeah, I read about the Slim and the price drop this morning and questioned my decision for a second about whether or not going with the Xbox 360 was the right decision. All in all though, I know I made the right choice just because the Xbox Live experience is so rubust. Also, more games available as exclusives and arcade downloads. From what I've read about the PS3, it does sound like a very good system, I just think it got to the next-gen table a little too late.

Um...Activision's threat? Never heard anything about that. What was it?

Activision called Sony out and said the games cost more to develop on the PS3 and they aren't making as much profit as they do on Xbox 360 or Wii due to the simple lack of ownership of the PS3. Activision threatened to drop support of the PS3 alltogether if they didn't drop the price. For the record Activision publishes Guitar Hero, Call of Duty, Tony Hawk, and many movie liscensed games such as Transformers, and since they bought Blizzard, they are the biggest publisher out there, so loosing Activision's support would of been the near death of the third party for PS3 and probably would cause other publishers to pull out until Sony had nothing left but its own exlcusive titles.

Sony really didn't get to the Next Gen table too late, they just had a poor launch, On-line play was free but lacking, and most importantly the price was too high. The Initial PS3 offerings were the 20GB model for $499 and 60GB model for $599. The basic version of the PS3 was $100 more than the Xbox 360 Pro from the gate, and the 360 had a year of good proven games already to the overpriced PS3's 20 or so titles it had at launch. There were a lot of Sony fanboys who resisted the PS3 nearly instantly due to the insane price. And to make things worse, other than Resistance: Fall of Man, sony didn't have a whole lot of exclusives until 2008.

Hitting $299 is big, very very big for Sony! BTW for those out there who are on the fence about getting one, but don't want the ugly 120GB model, both the 80 and 160GB models have been slashed $100. Yes the 80GB is $299, and the 160GB with Uncharted is $399.

I got my 60 gig PS3 back in fall of 07 and never looked back. i'm glad I did too since it's PS2 BC. This new system does not support BC yet Sony will not put most their games out on their Playstation Store. A Sony executive was quoted stating that it would not be back. Funny how theyw ant to compete yet lack of BC is one of the biggest gripes of many PS3 fans and will probably keep more at bay. Sony's arogance cost them this round. They are trying a formula of dictating the market when they cannot do that. Even microsoft caught on eventually. And what happened? Many supporters jumped ship to 360 and Wii. They lost a lot of their exclusives, and were left with PS3 clogging shelve space. I can't think of a launch any worse than that.

I'm perfectly happy with my 40GB PS3, other than the fact the HDD is filling up quick! I'm planning on getting a 320GB soon to replace it. But as far as the design, quality, and durability I haven't had any issues. I see the slim as a good thing for everyone who hasn't bought one yet, but if you have one already theres no reason to downgrade your PS3 to a cheaper looking model. But I imagine quality will be the same.
