Not really. The only character to be carried over is Hale although it does directly connect to the final scene of the first game. All you need to know about the first game's story is the basic setting of
Aliens try to pwn world, already pwned Europe but now started to pwn the US too.
And that Hale has been infected with the virus and that he's awesome.
But you learn all that in R2.
The controls are very different from the first one akin more towards FEAR than Resistance, yes you can change the control settings but not to the exact same as the first game.
Also the off-line multilayer for Resistance 2 sucks ass well nowadays all off-line multi-player modes suck.
If I could have used my 360 controller for Resistance I probably would have enjoyed it more. I never tried out multiplayer since I was the only one of my frieds with a PS3, and I absolutely hate playing with people I don't know (thanks to all of the racist six year olds on Xbox Live that claim to do very wrong thins to my mother every night)
You can play Resistance 1 multi-player off-line too all you need is another controller for your friend, you can actually play the full story mode (max 2 players) and a vs mode (I think 4 or maybe even more players).
Oh and I would consider it awesome to meet those kids in a game, they always have the best reactions to getting killed in-game.
