It could be possilble that they're just doing a system update. I don't have my PS3 currently hooked up right now so I can't say for sure.

While Sony won't admit it yet, I'm certain this is related to the attacks on Sony's networks and websites by the hacker group Anonymous.

You know, usually I try to defend Anonymous, but when their defense of "free speech" has to ruin things for everyone else, they really need to step back and plan things out a bit more. And the whole thing is just getting a bit silly. All they do now is bully and attack anyone they don't like, hide behind their anonymity, then claim it was to defend "free speech," or at least their definition of it.

Anon picked a pretty serious fight this time. This isn't a church basement Scientology website. The events leading up to these attacks have demonstrated what Sony is willing to do to those who don't play by their rules.

Who is "Anonymous"?

Who is "Anonymous"?

A group of hackers who, as their name implies, anonymous. The purportedly defend free speech, but they'll also attack anyone who they just don't like.

Those bastards. I swear if I was 18 and had a car, I'd track them down.

You'd need a helluva lot more than that. This is a hacking group that takes pride in the fact that no one knows who they are. And it's internet based, so chances are, they're spread out all over the country, if not the planet. And mind you, learning to be a real hacker takes time. Lots of time. It's usually a year before the average hacker has figured out all their tools.

So if you were 18 and had a car, you'd be able to drive around aimlessly before realizing you're attempting to fight something that has no identity or set location.

Yeah, PSN is down, Sony isn't sure what happened. Anonymous, however, is on the stand saying they don't know what's going on, and they're not responsible. So...yeah.

This is Anonymous, they love to brag. If they did it, they would be up-front about it. But they didn't, they specifically said they even though they're going after Sony, the PSN is off-limits because they don't want to hurt Average Joe User.

I think this confirms it.

It does. Halfway through the video they explain that they aren't going to hack the PSN unless they can find a way to do so without hurting the users, and that their fight is with Sony, not their customers.

So someone DID hack the PSN, but Sony shut it down themselves. Can we stop blaming people who aren't responsible for things now?

Im not blaming anyone..I could honestly care less if it was who everybody thinks it was or my cat. Either way sony got hacked and they shut down their servers to fix the problem. I don't see why anyone would get bent out of shape over someone calling out a group or individual.

According to the latest update from the Playstation facebook page, they're going to "rebuild the system to further strengthen the infrastructure".

I don't know what exactly that means, but it sounds like it's going to take a good bit of time.

I wonder how Sly is coping with this...

Who on earth is hacking anyways? Is it still Anonymous doing it?

Patiently waiting. I don't play much online anyway. The only thing I want to do is download the Dragon Age 2 demo. I had it before, but I erased it a few days ago to make memory room for the first Dragon Age game. I regret deleting it.

Anonymous says they didn't do it this time.

At this point I don't care who did it, as long as it comes back up soon.

I like how I can come to this site and get info on just about anything aside from Transformers too. I knew someone on here was having the same probs with the PSN as me. Good to have the info on what the heck is going on.

I would hope that they could post some new demos, addons, whatnot when it does get back up.

Also,

I heard Likwid's cat is the one that hacked the PSN.

True Story...

Man this has been going on for a long time now. Any idea how long this will go on? I can't watch Hulu either cuz of this. Luckily my Netflix is able to bypass having to login to PSN even though it shouldn't be working either according to Hulu tech support but it is on my PS3. But none the less this is affecting other features that come with the PS3 witch is good money we are paying for. There better be some compensation from Hulu and Netflix. Its been over a week now with out it. I don't have cable so I rely on my PS3 for Hulu and Netflix.

Why is this happening exactly? Someone hacked the network to do what now? And who is anonymous and what role are they having in this?
