MegaMan has his own thread. Sonic sort of has his own thread. So why not our favorite family of Snakes?
I'm playing Portable Ops right now. It takes some getting used to the PSP controls, and the fact that you can only hold four items is kind of weak, but it's pretty solid nonetheless. (Pardon the pun)
And I looked ahead in the script.
Apparently, Big Boss was supplying information to none other than our good friend Ocelot. The last couple lines of MPO, Ocelot mentions how he and Big Boss intend to become Patriots. Can't wait to see how they tie that to the beginning of Outer Heaven.
It's funny how far this series went. At first, it was a shooter/pseudo-stealth game, with cheesy terms and references. (Like anything in the '80s) Now, it's turned into a series that thinks it's a movie, with very heavy philosophical and political overtones.
EDIT: OOH! According to Wikipedia, Richard Steven Horvitz is going to be doing a character in MGS4! That's awesome!
I'll bet it's Johnny Sasaki.

Metal Gear is one of the coolest games ever, and MGS 4 may be the reason for getting a PS3, but I think I'll hold off on getting it day one for it. Why? Cause if 2 and 3 are any indication, they'll release a special enhanced version a year later. But I do want to know just how in the heck Vamp keeps living!
I prefer the PS1 version of MGS over the Cube version. Why? I don't know, nastalgia I guess. I fell in love with Metal Gear cause of the PS1 game, and that's where I think it's best. Plus, the Cube version's a little easier I think(borrowed it and beat it once). And they changed Mei Ling's voice, which I didn't like.
Anyway, I've heard a lot of bad press on MGS 2. Mostly cause of Raiden, but I like the gutsy move. MGS 2 also had a lot of interactivity in it, and it was pretty fun. The story was a bit out there, but it made a lot more sense the second time through.
MGS 3 I absolutely loved the first time through. Few months ago I decided to give it a second run, and I don't know why, but it's not as good the second time(and I didn't finish it again yet). It's still really good though, but doesn't have the same impact it did at first. Also, there isn't as much destructible stuff. Also, it didn't advance the story that much(even though it really couldn't), so from that perspective, it's not really "essential". Still a really, really fun game though.
Metal Gear's 1 and 2 in the Subsistence pack are great. Metal Gear 2 also has one of the more interesting final bosses, cause you essentially fight Big Boss with a lighter and hairspray. Oh, and MGS 1 overdramatized things with the "bare fisted fight in a mine field" between Snake and Grey Fox. That was underwhelming to me, cause your in a small little room with a few mines around you.

I actually can't get enough of MGS3. I love the boss fights. Especially with The End (my favorite boss battle of all time).

Twin Snakes is fun to play, and I do appreciate the graphical update, but I agree. The psx version is the real MGS. They changed littled things in TTS for no reason. The directing was crap.
My favorite scene in MGS1 is when Gray Fox slaughters the hallway full of guards. In the original when he stays invisible and it makes sense they're saying it's a ghost, there's a guard floating in the air bleeding from the chest and you're like WTF is going on here!? IN TTS Gray Fox is clearly visible during that scene and the guard is clearly impaled in the sword of a robot ninja, so why are they saying it's a ghost? Ruins the scene.
Plus TTS took out the line about the muk tuk eating contest which makes me laugh every time I hear it. The bottom line is TTS doesn't feel like a Metal Gear Solid game at all. It doesn't fit with the other games in the series.

True that, I hate me self for using cheat codes to skip it for the first few times I played it.

Why? Twin Snakes took out a few very minor lines, and is a lot more like Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater then MGS1 was.

Cheat codes? Like, you used a GameShark? Jeez, I just shot him in the back of the head with a sniper from across a bay, but that's not a cheat code.

I've only played TTS myself, but I haven't found anything wrong with it. Besides, I'm more of a new-age Metal Gear fan so it'll be easier to segway from TTS to MGS2 (which I've got for the Xbox).
And fyi he probably meant the cheat that you mentioned, it may not be a code but it probably passes for a cheat. It's not really a glitch, it's more of a trick.

I'm talking about the directing. TTS does not feel like a metal gear game at all. The action is over done and far more exagerated than anything else in the series. MGS flows into MGS2 much more smoothly.
As far as gameplay goes the MGS2 gameplay does not suit the MGS environment at all. TTS is way too easy. If they remade the locations it might have worked.

No, I have no idea why I put "code".
I was talking about the various cheats you can use to beat the guy. The date cheat and the one you mentioned.
Yea it's a cheat.
But after going at the battle normally. I couldn't believe how truly epic it was. maintaining stanima, finding him, going across a huge map. I was pissed when G4 didn't name it "best boss fight of the year" and gave the title to that walker thing in Halo 2 (I heard you don't even exactly fight the thing, you just go inside it.)
But fight was made a bit easier in Subsistence as you could see the sun glare off his rifle's scope.

The Metal Gear series has got to be the best series I have ever played. The story plot just seems so perfect and flows so well like a real movie. I seriously can't wait for MGS4 and the live-action movie. Sadly David Hayter will have nothing to do with it... ):
>_>; I even have the Snake's radio ringtone. I can't help my self not saying "Snaaaaaaake!" whenever it goes off. *l*

I like the series but to be honest, the story is getting way too convoluted for my liking. There is too much magic, mixed with double clones of dead guys, while gay vampires run on water and a Doc Ock rip off flies an F-22 around.
The gameplay I love but the story not so much. MGS3 was the most straightforward of the series and that's probably why I like it's story best. I like Ocelot and all but I'll be happy to finally know the whole story so I can figure out exactly who the Hell he's working for. Can't wait for a full 40 page explanation on what the Hell was going on throughout the timeline because I can't keep it straight.

Ocelot works for the patriots, he just switches sides whenever they want him to. And he only betrayed the patriots once he became Liquid Ocelot (even though that does not make sense!).

I'm pretty sure Liquid is in total control now. And Liquid hates the Patriots.
Still, I'm not 100% sure.

Oh God you had to bring up the mutant arm didn't you!? I swear Kojima had to be on some kind of controlled substance when he did the last two games.

Though there is a fun code... you can actually put in the
Konami code, you can find his exact location on the map.
And the sun glare has always been there. But maybe not as frequently as Substance.

Well, it helps to soften the blow when you remember that Liquid is a hard mofo to kill (I'm willing to bet that he's immortal somehow):
- he survived having his helicopter blow up with him inside (and if he ejected wouldn't he be sent right into the propelers?)
- He got shot in the face with a rocket about a dozen times
- he got the crap kicked out of him by solid and he was thrown off a cliff several times in the fight
- he had about 5,000 bullets put into his bare, shirtless chest
- he suffered from a severe genetic virus and "died"
- his corpse rotted for a while and then got dismembered/abused/blown up/ whatever happened to it in MGS2 (have yet to play it but roughly know the plot).

I was just thinking, why was MGS 3 called MGS 3? It should have just been called Snake Eater, and left out the 3, cause it's technicly not the third one, it's a prequal. All the talk of the unresolved plot lines so far really makes me want to get MGS 4.
I also just remembered one of my favorite homages: When Snake enters the room of that one esteemed Soviet Scientists in MGS3, he has plans for Metal Gear Rex in his office, and little statues/models of MGS Rex and Z.O.E. 2 Jehuty in there as well. What a cool Easter Egg. It's too bad you can't explore the area.

Devil May Cry did the same thing. The EXACT same thing. DMC3 was a prequel.
To be fair, they did the prequel because very few people liked DMC2.

And if you call Sigint afterwards, they have a conversation about how the designs for Metal Gear are unfeasible. (Like how it wouldn't be good for rough or uphill terrain)

To the guy talking about Liquid ejecting. On helicopters that do have the eject option, the blades are released and all shoot out before launching the pilot out. You'd think that engineers designing a HEAVIER THAN AIR METHOD OF FLIGHT would have enough foresight to be able t oavoid deli slicing the pilots when they're ejecting.

In the world of movies and video games, anything is possible (as long as there is a good explanation.) If you've seen the trailers, then I'am sure that we won't see most of these characters in future installments. I'am sure things will be made clearer in Metal Gear Solid 4.

I'm playing through MGS3 again on Extreme at the moment in subsistance. My brother completed Portable OPs recently and thats what got me in the mood to play 3 again. The Story in Portable ops is just awesome and has an awesome cast. won't say anything else incase i spoil it
The main reason i got Subsistance was to play MGS online and playing against real people was an awesome challenge. A friend and I used to go by the names "The Illusion" (Me) and "The Carnage" Highest Rank I got online was 2nd. After that, playing Extreme is not hard at all because the guards get knocked out and have 2 stars as soon as you smash them into the ground. Online, that move only takes a little bit off the stamina bar so I'm always ready for the next move.
European Extreme...now thats a different story, dying as soon as I get seen is quite hard for me because sometimes I accidentally cause footsteps near guards and then its game over.
I killed The End in that scene where Ocelot is doing his juggling russian roulette thing. Was sooo funny when his wheelchair wheel hit me

Favourite fights were against Volgin and The Boss (love me some CQC).
Anyway, My mate managed to get Fox Hound rank, we made a vid of the final fight and Ranking screen at my house and posted it on YouTube, you can check it out
here if you want. Countering The Boss is too cool. He's also a TransFan

I never did figure out the CQC in MGS3. The controls in that one just seemed wonky to me. I'd want to choke someone and instead I would punch them, grab them, throw them a foot away where I couldn't reach them, and then get the alarm sounded and get shot....I hated CQC.

CQC can be hard to get right at first but once you know how to use it properly its really useful if you want to get the higher ranks.
i think the most frustrating thing about it is when you want to grab someone but you end up throwing them. this is because you're holding a direction when you press circle. that automatically throws them to the ground.
If you want to just normally grab them run up to them and let go of the analogue stick and press circle. even if you run right up to them and they turn around and see you by hearing your footsteps, you still have enough time to press circle on its own and Snake will grab them and turn them around and the alert won't be triggered.
I'm sure you guys already know that once you grab a guard you can interrogate them by pressing the left analogue stick in (L3) or slit their throat by holding down circle.
The best CQC move by far that even works on Extreme and European Extreme is when you grab them (make sure you have a CQC gun equipped like tranq etc) now press up on the analogue stick and circle again and Snake will push the guard to the ground. Now immediately press square and Snake will say "freeze" when they're on the ground.
The guards weapon will disappear and they will stay on the ground for the entire time that you are in the area. you don't even need to kill anyone or use ammo and they will be out for the entire time, unless someone finds them, in which case they will get up but only have a handgun so even in alert they will do less damage. Its better than stunning them or putting them to sleep because they never get back up on their own
