Good to know but unfortunately my contact fell through and I won't be getting a Trypticon after all

Ack, no! That's too bad to hear. I'd still recommend you keep an eye out for any further opportunities though; Trypticon is very much worth having, especially for a decent price IMO :D

Honestly space is very limited for me so I would have to get a deal on Trypticon like I almost got.

Checked out my local Ollie’s for the first time and my jaw hit the floor.

I’ve moved to just buying movie figures, but at $50 that’s pretty tempting. Would you all recommend?

Hell yes!!! He's awesome and that's a great price. I got mine from Ollie's and don't regret it at all.

Wish I had an Ollie's anywhere near me. I got Trypticon a while back, but it's one of the earlier runs with the fragile hip joints. One of his legs is now ruined. I'd like to pick up another Trypticon for $50 for spare parts, as it were. Maybe some of these will hit Marshall's/TJMaxx?

Not sure, but I heard the hip issue was only in earlier releases. Is there a way to tell just from the box?

That's why I've raising this issue since this was first reported. Could it be that the reason for the veeeeeeeeeery low price is because they are the first releases? :???:

Allegedly, anything with a batch code higher than a certain number will be the "fixed" version without the hip ratchet flaws. I'm not sure exactly what that magic batch number is, though, so you'll have to do a bit of sleuthing on the internet. The batch code is always engraved into (note: not printed, but etched into the carboard) the box somewhere, usually around where you find a lot of the "legalease" printed.

Mine was one that supposedly had bad hips. Before I put the legs on, I tested the ratchets and found they I would have to force them to turn one way but not the other. So I went online and searched for the fix. You don't have to cut anything or bend anything or add anything. Just disassemble the legs and massage the springs for about 10-15 minutes. I put them under my feet and just sat in my chair moving my feet up and down. Now he's great. No issues with the legs at all.

Alright, Here we go -

So I did research on the Trypticon numbers and had a list of good and bad numbers. Went to Ollie’s today and found one (71731) that was supposed to be good. That wasn’t the case; it had bad hips, the tail got stuck, and the chest door won’t close. Thankfully I was able to fix all of these except the door (which I’ll work on tomorrow), but it was quite the process. (Thanks for the link to the hip fix, btw! It was very helpful) The tail fix in particular was crazy since you have to take the whole figure apart to do it (but it was kind of fun). Either way, I think ill enjoy the figure once all this stuff is fixed, but I gotta take a break from fixing it for now.

ALSO: Word of warning - If you’re going to do the tail fix on your trypticon, try to do it before you apply the stickers if possible. I didn’t and ended up stretching a few of the stickers that went over 2 pieces that had to separate for the fix :BANG_HEAD:

Also ALSO: Holy scrap this thing is huge

On the #serial...that's bad!

On your fixing it, that's good.

Darn right, he's huge. Slightly shorter than but of equal mass to TR Fort Max. 8-)

And as a bonus, he's coincidentally just the right height to be a match for a certain other villainous mecha kaiju (Disclaimer's note: Not my pic):

Do you have the fix for the chest door? I used a heat gun (a hair dryer can work too) and some gentle pressure to straighten it out. Just be cautious with heat, if this is what you are going to do, and take it slow. Good luck! ;)^

While not as much of a steal as the Ollie’s price, New Zealand retailer The Warehouse has an online-only deal for Trypticon of $129 - that works out to US$82.78 or so.

Alright, Trypticon’s all fixed! Just put a drop of superglue on the tab that doesn’t like to stay put on the chest panel and it’s all good. Gotta say, now that all the QC issues are taken care of, it’s a really fun figure. Certainly a learning experience though. My largest Transformer prior to this was HFTD leader Starscream, so handling a Transformer of this scale was insane. I haven’t posed the TR guys with him yet, but the legends/legion class scale figures look really cool with him!

Starscream’s taking Skywarp’s job in this one.

Edit: Just realized looking at that first picture that the plastic looks kinda warped where I put that glue on the door, meaning that I may or may not have glued the door shut. Crap. Could’ve sworn the glue was dry when I closed the chest panel. Have to check that out tomorrow.

So, back around Black Friday, BBTS had a 53% off preorder for Titan class Trypticon and so I sprung for one at the time since I hadn't gotten one for myself. I shipped it back in December and it arrived around near the end of the month. Having finally had the time, I got around to opening up the delivery box and have taken a look at my new Trypticon's batch number. It's one I've never seen listed before. It's 82351.

I haven't opened the figure's box yet, but I was wondering if this batch number has come up before as to indicate whether mine is a good Trypticon with no problems with the hips, tail, or chest door, or if it's one of the faulty ones.

I have no idea if it is or not, but the fixes for the legs and the door are fairly easy.

The chest door just involves tightening a screw on the right side up near the top of the door when you have him in City or Ship mode.

For the legs, do this:

I don't know about the tail. Mine didn't have the issue.

Okay, so, I finally opened up my Trypticon and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong the chest door or tail that I can see, which is good. The hip joints, meanwhile, felt a bit tight to me so I'm currently doing the fix where I squeeze the springs.

But, upon opening up the first hip joint, I found the inside of the two gear teeth pieces to be covered in some kind of nasty goo substance. I've washed it off and am hoping the second one doesn't also have this goo in it, and can only guess as to what it was put in there for. It looked like liquid glue but was merely slimy instead of sticky.

That's pretty interesting. Was the goo on the surface of the gear teeth for the ratchets? The main problem with the spring was that it was too strong and created too much friction on the ratchet teeth, which in turn would break the cross shaped post the gear sits on. This makes me wonder if Hasbro decided to use grease to reduce the friction during movement and retain the strength of the spring for static conditions like holding a pose.

Yeah, that kind of sounds like a silicone grease or something...

Update on my Trypticon.

I have decided not to do the spring-squeezing fix for the second hip because the top screw that holds the two teal pieces together is in there too good for me to unscrew from inside the two teal pieces, and I'd rather not risk damaging either the plastic, the screw, or the screwdriver in further trying to get it out, so I won't be disassembling the joint or checking the gear pieces for any grease or lube.

What's more is that the hip joint does move without too much force, so I guess I'm good anyway.
