There is a difference between having tough girls that need to be tough to survive and get the job done, and having tough girls taking the roll of the guys and the guys being the wimps. In this picture for example:
It's not Elita one being tough for a good reason, it's to make optimus look like a wimpy girl.
Making Optimus look like a wimp is a very good reason - though in that image, a favourite of mine, he's being emotionally taken by the strength of his established partner (which is the exact reversal of what usually takes place in TF fiction). And 'girl' is not an insult, so not sure what you're getting at here.
I would invite both Delta Magnus and Silly to read the current IDW ongoings, in which all three characters have been established in their distinct and individual personalities. Combiner Hunters, if anything, will build on that.
In addition, perhaps something on positive, wider representation and diversity in fiction, too.
