Absolutely loving Moonracer! Her and Elita-1 are must buys for me, as is Abominus and all the Prime Masters.

I'm not crazy about the Powermaster/Breastforce looks, either.

When I think of G1, of course the original toys come to mind....but also those original personalities as well. Sure, those were based on tech specs and the limited amount of characterization in the cartoon/comics, but they've all been stitched together in my head-canon to be my ideal Optimus Prime, Megatron, etc.

I mean, enjoyed Megatron's story in IDW's MTME/Lost Light....but I still can't imagine him finding or wanting redemption, personally.

And hey, I know he ain't a Prime, but it would've been cool to see a Megatron to Galvatron PotP Leader-class figure!

Also note that anything outside of the first two waves may have placeholder images, that goes especially for the Prime Master and Legends Classes. Photoshops, images of the G1 versions, you name it.

Wouldn't make that much sense to retool those just panels. Besides, the leaks were of such quality that distortions when enlarged could easily occur, then there's Hasbro's penchant for mistransforming.

I'm late to the fun because there were a lot of posts over the weekend. Just wanted to point out that going through all of these posts nobody pointed out that of course Inferno is a retool, he has to be one to incorporate a Prime Master, or in this case the blue Enigma at the end of the ladder.

Except we got ths clear picture in the meantime, with no trace of retool at all on the ladder :

This is true, they used a lot of placeholders in the initial leak. I'm hopeful that Outback gets a new head, but Cindersaur makes sense as the second use for the Slash mold. The wave 3 Prime Masters all use G1 shells as stand-ins, but I doubt they'll change.

I just noticed "Couldburst" in the leak.

That may be a clearer picture, but that doesn't mean it's a newer version of the figure in it. Valcanicus, Emperor Starscream, Elita-1, and Abominus all have spots in their chest to stick an Enigma that comes with the Voyager torso, there's little chance that Inferno won't be retooled to do the same in torso mode.

It's also possible the first image was altered, if you look closely it appears to have been flipped and the cylinder that belongs on the left is now on the right. I still think the final figure will have added retooling for an Enigma/Prime Master, though.

They didn't even retool his forearms for attaching the feet/armor, so I don't know what you're hoping for.

As a collector, I don't mind the repaints and consider anything with a couple parts changed but easily recognizable as a retool. I tend to buy characters that interest me, with a strong preference for the first couple years of G1, but I also don't mind buying most Hasbro "Generations" releases given the relatively low price. I will likely buy most of the Power of the Primes line with the probable exceptions of the leader class repaints and possibly skipping the titan class Predacons (have a third party set I prefer the scale of). I guess if there are a couple of the smaller figures that don't float my boat, I'd consider skipping them, but I tend to buy in sets as the waves come out, anyway (BBTS).

I'd imagine collectors are a pretty diverse lot. Transformers are the ONE hobby I can't really explain. I don't have a single close friend that is really interested in them, although one friend knows most of the characters and seems to humor me when I show him my new acquisitions:-) Scale matters to me more than most, inexplicably. For example, I really don't care for the Masterpiece line, despite the quality. I would be perfectly content if everything was "deluxe" class, with the occasional voyager scale for figures that make sense, but that's just my preference. Combiners are neat, especially when the G1 figures combined, but I liked the CW line better than any since the Classics line first appeared. Power of the Primes definitely excites me, even if every figure isn't perfect and Hasbro wants to make some extra money off of repaints and retools.

I'm soon moving apartment and the first things I'm packing is my collection and it has forced me to transform lots of figures which I haven't touched in ages. Especially the fiddly generations figures who, though adequate updates, were perhaps too intricate for their own good especially at the size they were. Makes me hope for more updates of certain figures that didn't turn out as well as I had hoped.

Inferno and grapple were 2 of these. And am disappointed by this new inferno as it's just as a repaint of a mould I already have 2 versions of, and would've liked the current crop of designers to come up with a new take... I mean there seems to have been a shift in the approach to generations figures - whereas before they tried to update the designs including the vehicle and homaging the character some way, now they're looking more at the original toys and seeing how to update them..

I personally love this approach and I would've liked them to use it with inferno. Kinda like how CW Ultra Magnus seemed to borrow a fair bit from the MP edition to produce a great version of the character and the original toy..

I see where you're coming from, but I think the new design team have been taking the G1 "inspiration" too far. Look at sixshot, if he had come out in the old generations line his altmodes might have looked like actual vehicles instead of a robot doing yoga.
Also we had a really nice thing going with the IDW designs, that Ulta Magnus looks like it junped out of the page. But now it's all G1 with elbows. That's ok with figures with good altmodes like Triggerhappy, but figures like the Fastclash autobot clone are trash because of it.
I don't mean to argue, but I can't agree with you 100%.

Agreed. If the toys are basically G1 with articulation, then you lose a bit of that wow factor when discovering the toy. It feels less new and fresh and is instead easy to predict with little surprises. It ends up being a 2.0 version rather than a full on update. I feel MPM 04 Optimus Prime is a lot like that too when compared to the ROTF mold.

Not to say we cant have fun with some of these but Sixshot and the Clones are a good example of how it can be lackluster.

Regardless, not a fan of that Inferno.

Yes, even Dreadwind and Darkwing, I believe. They do both come with the crappy new combiner hand. I mean armor.

Actually, that gives me a few slightly different thoughts. I'm guessing the Darkwing/Dreadwind Combo uses the combiner peg from one of them, meaning the other has both a peg and a port. I'm wondering if you can fanmode both of them into a funky misshapen arm or leg.

Also, for the one with both a peg and a port, can they combine with any of the other figures, say maybe the arielbot jets?

I'd... not even considered that, actually. I totally figured they would use the 5mm hole used for the hands/feet and stick a peg on the rear jet, with the wings locking them together a bit.
Using the combiner pegs would actually be really smart, and allow for some fun fan-transformation nonsense. You could probably figure some kind of standing gun turret from an arm-on-a-leg, perhaps?

Hey everyone, I just noticed a few things on Hun-Gurr that are actual differences in the mold from Silverbolt.

Disclaimer: I am not interested in arguing the semantics of retool/shared engineering/who's you design daddy, so if I say retool, it is simply due to laziness (only 6 letters).

It seems like there are a few distinct differences that are all somewhat related, so in no particular order.

1. Look at Hun-Gurr's robot legs. It looks like he has ankle tilts, which is an improvement over Silverbolt.

2. Again at the legs, look at the sides, no combiner torso panels like on Silverbolt, instead it looks like the combiner torso has a different panel or set of panels that covers the area where the combiner head comes out. In fact, it looks like a single panel to me without a split down the middle like on Silverbolt, and the itty-bitty beast front legs on the sides of the combiner chest.

3. Hun-Gurr's torso orientation. It looks like his torso is oriented 180 degrees from Silverbolt. On Silverbolt, both the robot chest and combiner chest end up on what is the undercarriage of the jet mode. For Hun-Gurr, the combiner torso looks like it is on the undercarriage of the beast mode, but Hun-Gurr's chest is the back (top) of the beast mode.

So, even though Hun-Gurr is a retool (or insert your favorite term here), there is a bit more going on that your standard retool for aesthetic purposes. This was an insta-buy for me no matter what, but I'm digging it more the more I look at it. I forget, is he wave 2 or 3? Man it is going to be a long wait no matter what.

I already explained it on the previous page, but it looks like BlackwingDarkwing has a peg hidden under the hinge the head is on, opposite of the Combiner peg. That peg plugs into the back of Dreadwind, with tabs stabilising the combo.

You know, Inferno being based on a CW Voyager mold, he's the only one to be able to accommodate a Legends figure, in this case the Groove mold on his chest. That has me thinking: what if he came with a separate piece that has his Enigma, which connects to his chest in Combined mode?

Entirely possible, though I'm still hoping for some minor retooling to bring the mold up to snuff with the rest of the Voyagers. There's been so many inconsistencies in the early photos and art that I would have a hard time saying anything about this guy is known for sure when he isn't even coming out until next summer.

It's strange how Hasbro seems to be having trouble keeping track of what their figures are supposed to look like this time around. First we had Swoop change from red chest to blue, then they had the wrong picture of Hun-Grrr and had to cover the head with a Decepticon symbol, then Cutthroat was displayed with the wrong head, and now Inferno's art with Onslaught's body. What that tells me is that we can't really trust everything we've seen to be accurate until someone buys it from a store.

But those wouldnt work with their ecosystem.

For TR, the Legends Class was never labelled as part of the ecosystem. It went, TM, deluxe, voyager and Leader. So they could add TM integration or not. Plus they had some that worked with the tapedecks and others that didnt.

But for POTP, its 100% part of it, so a rerelease of older toys who cant interact with the gimick has less chances of happening.

Still digging through backlog. This is hilarious in hindsight. WJ, you have a tendency to make strong or absolute statements based on limited information that turn out to be wrong. :P

Personally I'm holding out for a Takara Tomy release of Rumble, Frenzy, and Eject. I passed on Hasbro's Rumble because I thought it was certain we'd get a Legends version, but then they went and skipped right over those three and Buzzsaw and Stripes. Maybe they'll do them in two packs after the clones, or maybe we have to wait for either company to do Broadcast and Soundblaster before we get the rest of the tapes. Don't let me down!
