Probably the latter, it had more color.

And resembled the Japanese cartoon model better:

He appears to have a little door on his chest in both modes for hiding a peg hole for a Prime Armor. So while he doesn't come with an armor piece he does have the ability to interact with one properly.

Now I just hope I can buy two. I have three of the G1 figure (the third was unintentional, it was in an eBay lot) and both of the club exclusives which I would have bought two of the first one had it not been so hard to get. I have no problem at all adding two more Generations style figures of the character(s) to my collection.

And yeah, I need a Repugnus to finish out my monster trio. Incidentally I also need a G1 version for the same reason... eventually.

This is probably just wishful thinking, but are we sure Punch isn't a combiner? The only reason I ask is because I see a 5mm hole at his knees that look like they may go on the back in car mode or perhaps limb mode. Is it possible the combiner peg is hidden?

P/CP would need one on his feet as well, but there's no dedicated space made in either spot. I don't see any room for the peg, either.

Of course if they are available for wide release, I'd probably still have to pass on Repugnus. No point getting him given how Grotusque was unavailable to me.
I should go back to bed.

That's what annoys me too. I know the chances of getting Grotusque for a non-insane price are pretty low, and you can't just have one Monsterbot.

THAT SAID if I see Doomgerbil Grotusque at TFNation for a not-ridiculous price I'll scoop him up.

I got him( Doomgerbil ) from Amazon for the price of a leader class fig. It wasn't insane. Only complaint is that Hb went budget on the main mold plastic.......meaning paint crazy over the base purple plastic/ABS?PVC runner.

I apologize if this was already posted but I could not find this anywhere so here it is.

I believe I have solved the box artwork combination of PotP voyager Elita One, Starscream and part of Inferno. I have scanned and posted the images I am talking about below so you can see for yourself.

First up is Starscream’s unidentified Combiner, I was looking at the combination artwork that was on the side of Dreadwind’s insert and figured out the following: The right arm is easily identified has Dreadwind because of his unique shoulders. The left leg is a yellow body with what looks like teal limbs, the only PotP figure that fits this description is Sinnertwin. The right leg is a blue and light purple figure, and the PotP figure that is blue and light purple is Blot. Now the left arm was the hardest, but if you look to the right of the figures head you can just see a purple fin, and that means either Dreadwind or Blackwing, since Dreadwind is already the right arm that means the left arm is Blackwing. So in conclusion the Starscream combiner box artwork is has follows:
Torso: Starscream
Right Leg: Blot
Left Arm: Blackwing
Right Arm: Dreadwind
Left Leg: Sinnertwin

Next is Elita One’s combiner Elita-Infin1te. Looking at the insert that comes with Jazz and Moonracer you can easily see that the left arm is Moonracer and the left leg is Jazz. The part of the right leg you can see is black; the details you can see are the same has the right part of Jazz’s spoiler and just outside of Jazz’s right window. That means the right leg is either a cancelled or unannounced black repaint of Jazz, most likely a figure whose four out of five toys is a black repaint of Jazz, Ricochet aka Stepper. Now you cannot see the right arm but I believe it is Novastar do to Jazz, Moonracer, and her having the same Prime Armor/combiner hand. So in conclusion the Elita-Infin1te combiner box artwork is has follows:
Torso: Elita One
Right Leg: Ricochet aka Stepper
Left Arm: Moonracer
Right Arm: Novastar
Left Leg: Jazz

Now for the final one the Inferno combiner, I have only figured out part of this one do to the only picture coming from a voyager box which shows less than a deluxe insert. The left leg is Slug has you can just make out his head frill. The left arm is Moonracer has you can see the same shade of green has her on the upper right of the picture. The right leg I think is a dinobot either Snarl or Sludge, maybe one of you can identify the figure to the left of the generations logo. Has for the right arm no clue. So in conclusion the Inferno combiner box artwork is has follows:
Torso: Inferno
Right Leg: Snarl or Sludge
Left Arm: Moonracer
Right Arm: Unknown
Left Leg: Slug

I highly doubt that since the generations line started in 2010 and had no leader class until 1 toy in thrilling 30 (2014). Plus, titans return added more product than ever with the additional titan master class which POTP kept. There was far less product before that.

The ScottyP trick for Abominus certainly helps the look of mine, even with 2 non-terrorcon limbs, and it even helps give Volcanicus better feet too!

If you didn't know what it was, turn the combiner feet 180 and use the hands for their intended use as plug ins for the feet, just as toes, not heels in this case. It really helps

As others have said, I could see the Punch/Counter-punch mold being reused for a Nightbeat figure. I also thought of Getaway/Lightfoot or even Minerva being a possible reuse of Counter-punch as well. I wonder if Hasbro would produce any of these possible characters in the future?

It really wouldn't be surprising at all if the Punch/Counterpunch mold was retooled at least two times for two more figures without the double bot modes. Maybe he's a preview of things to come in War for Cybertron since the mold isn't tied permanently to a Prime Wars gimmick.

Now they need to make a proper Doubledealer with this much love.

So if Ricochet/Stepper is a limb, would he be from the Jazz mold or a retooled Punch?

What she said! I was about to go to the Wiki to compare but that image is very helpful, thank you!

I know nothing about Punch/Counterpunch beyond what's on the aforementioned Wiki, but was very excited to see he was getting a new figure. And he looks so fun! I love gimmicks that add play value and his spy routine sounds great.

On the subject of not knowing much about the character, was he a combiner limb in a past life? The negative reactions pointing out his lack of combiner port have me very confused. Never mind, I just visited his page and saw. So now I want him to combine, too :BANG_HEAD:

(Counter)Punch looks great, knees seem weird though. I wonder how odd the other front will look in each robot mode.

Yeah I thought about that, but chalked it up to budget cuts. The fact that they share a few frames, a scene or two makes them no more connected than any random group of Autobots during a S1/S2 exposition scene at Autobot HQ. Well also the fact that they are all voiced by John Maschitta, but again...budget...

ok, so I'm going to use a scale here. Lets use deluxe as 1 point, (based roughly on price) legends as 1/2 point, TM/PM as 1/3 point Voyagers as 1.5 points, Leaders as 2.5 points, and a Titan as 10 points. Also I'm just counting general retail releases. No Convention, Club, or Online exclusives

Generations 2010-2011=20 points
FoC 2012-2013 =26 points
T30 2013-2014=54 points
CW 2015-2016=70.5 points
TR 2016-2017=81 points

Compared to PotP =48 points

So I was mostly correct. Yes the first couple generations lines didn't have as much, everything from T30 on had more. The only point I'm trying to make is, obviously with less time (12 months) we are going to get less product than in 18 months. It just seems that PotP was an "in transition" line that was well into production when this marketing shift was decided by Hasbro, and *hopefully* any unused ideas will have just been transferred over to the next line/trilogy, and not scrapped altogether. It just would have made more sense IMHO to let the Prime wars Trilogy finish with a fully fleshed out 18 month line, and then put into effect their newly, shortened brand change. But that's just me.

I think I see a combiner port under Counterpunch's faux chest, but I'm not sure. Both look great but I am really digging Repungus' bot mode. Insect(?) mode looks a little derpy, but my biggest gripe is his swords. Why are there Titan Master seats in them? Other than that, everything looks great to me, even if Punch/Counterpunch can't combine ;)^

While less product per line, I think the new 12 month rule will ultimately benefit us fans.

The engineering for both the headmasters and the combiners are quite good, and have long-lasting ramifications. So over the course of the next X years, HasTak can trickle out the missing figures we are clamoring for (Seacons, Pretender Monsters, Apeface and Snapdragon, etc).

I am tending to think of how this design team is doing things as building an engineering portfolio. They are doing a lot of R&D into the additional gimmicks aside from just transforming.

They have done some fantastic things with Engineering this time around. As far as deluxe class is concerned: Terrorcons are all fantastic, with Blot being an amazing standout. The deluxe Dinobots are quite faithful G1 representations, and while the complaint is that they are small, I tend to look on the flipside. This gives HasTak time to release larger scale (Voyager/Leader) dinobots in later lines without having to go "all or nothing". Then we have Battletrap, which means more duocons could be coming.

Let's also not forget, that it is in HasTak's best interest not to give us everything we want all at once. If we got all the remaining combiners this time around, it could give people a good reason to stop collecting. A steady flow of product is what keeps us coming back.

So, since Hasbro obviously does listen to fans (Blast Off, Repugnus, Dinobots, Terrorcons, Predacons), it's time to start crying out for a Special Edition Combiner Wars Ratchet, it's a good mold for him, plus it helps balance the CW limbs a bit better.

I seriously doubt that is a combiner port, because the center portion of the car hood has to store in the torso for bot mode, and the head has to store there for car mode. Plus, there is a clear lack of 5mm port for the combiner hand or foot to attach to on the back of the car (leg mode) and the bottom of the feet (arm mode). There is a 5mm port on the top of the back of the car, but that isn't in a spot that would be used for arm or leg mode and is simply to attach his gun in car mode.

So, how does everyone feel about the Monsterbots shopping at the same pants and shoes stores? In a way, it's nice that they all feel like a unified group with similar, yet still distinguishable (from the waist up, at least) robot mode structures and the same new play gimmick with Titan Master compatibility and head utilization, replacing the G1 "cold-sparks" gimmick. Was this Hasbro's genius pre-engineering at work the whole time or lazy/cost-cutting R&D?

P.S.

Cyberpath, would you be so kind as to repost your earlier charts for the other two Monsterbots, Doublecross and Grotosque? It would be nice to compare all three now (and I'm too lazy to search back through the Titans Return thread for the others right now).

P.P.S.

I wonder how Japanese fans are feeling right now. Takara only gave them Doublecross so far. They're behind two now, and with the Legends line in limbo, and the "brand unification" taking over their "Classics/G1" distribution plan, how are they ever going to get these Hasbro exclusives? Maybe they could be crammed into Takara's Power of the Primes like Nemesis Prime and Wreck Gar, but they'd be the odd figures out, not fitting the "play pattern" of the rest of the current series being Titan/Head Master throwbacks.

Not to be pedantic, but Repugnus is edging the part-sharing side of things, as he shares even less parts with Twinferno than Grotusque does upon closer inspection:

Grotusque
- all of the leg, robot and beast
- main torso piece
- weapons

Repugnus
- Robot mode feet swivels (beast mode legs are all new)
- Robot upper leg
- fists and upper arms from Grotusque.

The Titan Master is pretty much a given, head aside.

It's possible that these could be added later as standard Japanese PotP releases (since yes they are getting Nemesis Prime and Wreck-Gar as standard)...However, if not, I figure any fan over there that really wants one will have to pay extra, just like fans outside of :TAKARATOMY:'s zone had to for toys exclusive to their Transformers line. For the most part, I don't think those fans really care, Japan didn't get TR Alpha Trion, Sentinel Prime, Quickwitch, Nautica, Metalhawk, Tidal Wave, etc...(I've often observed items that are *exclusive* to North America, and don't see a lot of Japanese fans trying to bid on them) but for the ones that do, I'm sure they'll just pay extra to get the Hasbro versions.
