Display cases

So, looks like I'm finally going to be a home owner. That means it's time for permanent shelving solutions for the den.

What are you currently using for display and how is it working out?

Ideally, I would like to build or buy some sort of modular shelving units with glass doors. Ikea kiiinnd of does this with the Detolf shelves. I may go that route, but I'd like to hear some options or stories about what you've done. Pictures would be even better.

Let's do our best senpai!

Oh, right... >:oP

When I set up it was basically a case of go around to garage sales and see what I could get nice and cheap.

Hence why if you walked into my collection room you'd see lots of different styles of shelving. It's not the best, but it was affordable.

I'm a huge fan of the Billy Bookcases from ikea. You can easily customize them with glass shelves and clear doors. The only downside is the expense: one bookcase + 2 doors + 4 glass shelves is $210 or so.

Picture forthcoming

Got a barrister bookcase myself. It was from a rummage sale some time back, guy had a good number of other ones, but I just got the one to see if it would fit the space I needed, and by the time I found out it would and rushed back to get the others they were all gone. Wish I had gotten one or two more, as it's pretty much perfect for all kinds of display options.

I think this is the route I'm planning to go. Seems like the most cost efficient way.

i have one ikea hemnes bookcase with glass doors in the living room, i which i keep my masterpieces.
all the rest of my stuff is upstairs, shared between the collection room and attic room
what i did was buy a boatload of ikea ivar modular shelving, and paint it white. it was the only option that i had to get some easily adaptable storage that could fit the room in the way that i wanted, for reasonable prices
true glass display cases would not have been flexible enough

I live in a small NYC studio apt with my wife, so my display options are extremely, extremely limited (though I must say my wife has generously ceded 2/3s of our overall closet space to toy storage).

I use modular shelving from the Container Store. No glass, but the shelves are easily rearranged via the bars on the sides, and if you have multiple units you can connect the shelves via the selfsame side bars. The CS product pages show off the various configuration options:

I aspire to a Detolf-like situation once we move into a bigger place, but this is what I have now:

I'm still a big fan of the Detolf stuff, but I do like the idea of Billy with glass doors/shelves. It would also allow you to add multiple layers at different heights, rather than the fixed position of a Detolf.

(Ugh, terrible pic. Need to re-take them next time I'm in Italy.)

Let's say I buy a metric shit-ton of Billy Bookcases...

Who wants to come over, drink beer, and help me put it all together?

An older photo. The one on the right doesn't have glass shelves yet.

12 hour drive from where I live? Sure, I'll be right over.

Btw, one warning: those bookcase sides are one long slab of particle board. Bring a car that you can fit them in.

Congrats on the house! We moved into ours last year and the downstairs quickly became the collection room (pics in the collections thread).

Luckily the new house had two big shelves built into the walls. That housed most of the collection. I got some black 5-shelf units from Target for the MP's and G1 stuff. The Billy book cases look really good. A friend of mine uses them to display his 1/6 scale statues. He also got the Ikea lighting systems you can put into the shelves. It is awesome.

If you do buy a metric ton of book cases, let me know. I don't remember how far you are now since the move.

And make sure they're the right way up all the way through the assembly, right It Is Him? :P

When I return from vacation, I'm going with the Detolf. I like the look of the glass vs particle wood. My brother-in-law is good with woodworking, so I'm going to see if he can do something like this for me:
