Are we nearing a Classics collection tipping point?

Between a mixture of Hasbro and 3rd Parties, we're nearing a completion of pre-Movie characters, and there's a good chunk of season 3 characters that have been done as well. Sure there's a few who could do with better representations (I'm looking at you Hot Rod), but it's still decent.

This year it appears to be combiner wars with Hasbro vs 3rd Parties, which will only benefit us collectors.

So after 2015, where will you want your collection to go?

This is something I've been thinking about for a while. Not counting upgrades/replacements (and non cartoon characters) and stuff that has been teased, there are only 10 characters I still need figures for. Unfortunately I don't see half of them being made.

As for 2015, I see myself finishing off my Classics collection, for the most part. Dinobots (GCreation), Protectobots (TFC), Autobot Clones (X2), Throttlebots (TW), Technobots and Combaticons (WB), Terrorcons (UT), and Headmasters (FP). Thank you 3P for helping complete my collection!

I also plan to buy every combiner team Hasbro releases, as well as Optimus, and all the legends toys designed to go with them.

After 2015 my collecting will be slowing down a bit. There will just be Masterpiece and the odd impulse buy.

I reached my tipping point just before Trailbreaker came out and sold most of my Classics off. It's weird but whenever I nearly finish a collection, I drop it. I prefer the race more than the goal I guess. Now I'm going for Masterpieces because that's going to take another decade and cost a fortune.

I love my Classics collection! :x

My current collection is still evolving into what I hope will be my perfect representation of screened characters from all four seasons of the G1 cartoon all reasonably scaled and ready to roll out!

Where a character hasnt had a Deluxe or Voyager figure which scales well enough produced by Hasbro, I look for a 3rd Party or self made custom to fill in, maybe permanently until something better comes along, affordability allowing. ;)

Should anyone be interested, my evolving list is as follows with the blanks still needing a figure!

They have almost all of Beast Wars still to give us. All we got so far are rattrap and Rhinox and (though I wish we wouldnt count them) Dinobot and Cheetor. Next year is the 20th anniversary, hopefully smething good is being cooked up.

Also, I am still hoping for a voyager Astrotrain and a better Ratchet/Ironhide.

I'm close to being done with classics, I should be done in 2015.

I want to go crazy with Combiner wars, but I'm running out of money, and space.

I think one of the things that I'm so hesitant on Combiner wars is I want the original members, and I don't want to pay for 3rd party replacements.

I'm considering just getting Silverbolt and Motormaster.

Now that I think about it, there are a bunch of G1 transformers that we didnt get a classics reinterpretation of. Like Scorponok, Trypticon, Slugslinger, Sharkticon, wheelie, Omega Supreme, Topspin and Twintwist. Although, you are right, those are mostly post film.

And dammit, I really wish we could get a decent Blurr classics toy. A redeco of Drift doesnt make much sense to me, its not sleek at all.

Some of those are already covered. We have BotCon 2014 Scorponok, a Legends Class Trypticon from 2006 (I know, not what you really want in a Trypticon toy), BotCon 2010 Sharkticons and an upcoming Legends Sharkticon for 2015, Universe 2008 Legends Wheelie and GDO Deluxe Wheelie, Year of the Snake Omega Supreme, and Generations Deluxes Topspin and Twintwist. I'm using Energon Sluglinger as his G1 self currently, but I admit the resemblance is far from perfect in that case.

i have a personal list of figures id like to achieve for my generations shelf. and between hastak and 3P, theres been no love for these G1 guys:
skylynx, trypticon, highbrow, pointblank, sureshot, crosshairs, apeface, snapdragon, triggerhappy, misfire, slugslinger

theres some figures that have been shown love, but didnt meet my expectations/tastes, like FP's headmasters or whoevers making those recent autobot clones.

None of those got mass market releases. Except for generations Topspin ans twintwist but are they really their G1 counterparts? They didnt combine to form a gestalt in G1.

Universe 2008 Legends Wheelie was mass release. It just suffered from wonky distribution woes. Also, you don't have to combine Generations Topspin and Twin Twist into anything if you don't want to. ;) Yeah, they're arguably from FoC, and are based on FoC molds and designs, but they didn't exist in the game or ancillary fiction (as far as I know), and were made up just for the toyline. I think that makes them fair game for repurposing for their G1 selves. Hasbro is not likely to get around to "Classics" versions of those two any time soon, honestly.

For me, "Classics" is basically just beginning. They've done a lot of the, well, classic bots, sure, but I'm more interested in the 'cult favorite' types; the Music Meisters to the Jokers, to borrow from Mkall's avatar.
Plus there's all the other generations to cover (gimme Blackarachnia, Strika, Barricade) and I guess I'm still waiting for a proper MtMtE Whirl.

I'm pretty much in agreement with you on this one. I feel that we'll see a pretty much completed G1 Seasons 1-4 released by the end of 2016. Pretenders (done as I want them to be) and Micromasters won't be focused on in any real way unless a new 3rd party appears out of nowhere, but I was never all that interested in those lines to begin with so I don't mind too much if they aren't released in any large number.

After this, I suspect 3rd Parties will look primarily to the Japanese series for their inspiration, or possibly shift the focus more to the MP scale.

I do like many of the character designs from the Japanese G1 series, so I'll get them for sure.

I am looking forward to the day where I can call my collection mostly complete. I think I'm closer to that goal now more than ever.

While I would not consider what was released as exclusives as classics (or else we would already have all our classics Beasr Wars characters which we do not), I think your comments on Topspin and Twin Twist are spot on. These are the classics rendition we will get for the foreseable future. And the fact that they are from the game (even though they never appeared) doesnt change that since I believe we would lose a lot of classics characters if we discounted their game toys. We would have no classics Shockwave for one, no classics Soundwave or Blaster or casettes and no Voyager Grimlock for our classics collection. All to say that I think people count those generations release as the classics release of figures in a way (let me know if I am wrong, people). Although, we never know with these things. They are remaking Silverbolt afterall and possibly giving us another Onslaught in Combiner Wars (that would make it the 2nd generations Onslaught and the 5th mold of the character in CHUG) so it seems Hasbro has no problems making another mold for classic characters when it deems it right to. And same for Whirl and Roadbuster who teamed up with Top spin and Twin twist to form FOC Ruination. With those last two, I dont know if their very recent releases as completely new molds would mean that people are not counting the FOC figures as classics stand ins or not.

And another thing for topspin and twin twist, with Hasbro geering more and more towards flip and change and easy transformations for yournger audiences, I believe bringing that idea to the generations line for these 2 would be a pretty good idea. We could see how modern engineering could improve the 80s jump starters.

You know what, the worst part about those jump starter marvel figures is that Tops Spin and Twin Twist actually transform more by having new pieces appear in alt mode (the nozzles behind the robot legs) giving them a semblance of transformation. These dont even try, all these years later.
