The state of the G1 remake marathon

Hi y´all!

I have been thinking a lot about G1 remakes, which dominates both CHUG and the Masterpiece sub-lines. I wondered, how far have we come to complete which years? Etc. So I sat down and made a list of all G1 toys, except the Micromasters, and checked it up, mainly using TFWiki.

The list itself with some explanation can be seen here:

https://tftheoretician.wordpress.com/g1 ... -overview/

Whereas I have written a post about it here:

https://tftheoretician.wordpress.com/20 ... -marathon/

I mean to write another post where I will hypothesize how long this marathon will go on, and what will happen next, but until then, I am curious to hear what your theories are? Let´s discuss!!!

Note: Despite multiple checkups, there WILL be mistakes in the list, if you find them, feel free to point them out...

Wow that looks like a lot of work you put in. Awesome.

I will say, that while I understand your reasoning for not including WFC/FOC figures for the most part, I don't know that I'd apply that rule in the case of Shockwave, seeing as he isn't an "earth mode" kind of guy, thus he's not really what you've taken to calling a "premake" the way Soundwave or Blaster are.

Thank you all!

It means a lot that someone else than myself enjoys the fruit of my labor :)

As for FOC/WFC figures I am on the fence a bit, I will give it some more thought...

Great job, your work ethic and organizational skills are impressive. The list is detailed, interesting, thorough, expansive and informative.

Including or excluding WFC/FOC is a tough choice. I can respect either one. I can see how you are organizing it.

What about including FOC Grimlock? He is voyager, and unlike Soundwave or Blaster he is very true to G1. Different transformation but over all very similar look. He seems to fit 1984 G1 remake more than Cybertronian alternative pre-make.

FOC Grimlock, especially the Target exclusive version is spot on G1.

Indeed. The Target Grimlock repaint went right on my Classics shelf when I opened him up. He's fantastic and scales nicely with Classics Voyager Optimus Prime. The deluxe "Silver Knight" Optimus went in the storage bin.

I agree both with the notion that FOC Grimlock is very G1-esque, and, as someone else pointed out, that the WFC Soundwave and FOC Shockwave designs were used as "G1" designs for these characters in the IDW MTMTE comic. However, my criteria for a toy making it to the list is, whether that toy was designed with the intention of being a G1 update for the character´s original toy? In all three cases, I would say no. Then, whether one thinks a WCF/FOC toy works as a legitimate G1 update for them or not is, in my opinion, another issue.

For comparison, consider Starscream. If we look at his CHUG deluxes only we have the Classics one, the WFC one and the Armada tribute one. Now, he has appeared with all three bodies in the IDW comics, but I think that you would agree that only the first one (F-15 alt mode body) qualifies as a G1 update. As for Soundwave, we´ve seen him appear in G1 and WFC bodies in the comic, but only the latter one has been awarded a toy (actually, TWO, inexplicably enough) whereas for the former, we "only" have a Masterpiece toy. Which we also have (again, two of) for Starscream. As for Shockwave, we have neither.

So yes, I consider CHUG G1 updates for Soundwave and Shockwave a mysterious, yet glaring gap in the soon decade-long stream of G1 update releases...

You may, but Hasbro (and presumably Takara), do not see it as such. You might be waiting for an awfully long time, because you and the people that make your toys are not on the same page at all about who has been "properly" covered for classic "G1" representation.

Has a Hasbro representative explicitly stated that they won´t release any more CHUG Soundwave and Shockwave from this point? Or is this your personal assumption?

Either way, I´m not exactly waiting for such toys for my own sake, since I own WFC Soundwave and FOC Shockwave and consider these the ultimate versions of the characters, since I have never been a fan of "device modes" anyway. I just find it curious that Soundwave and Shockwave (and Blaster) did not get proper updates during the Classics run. As for Soundwave, he got a reissue of the G1 toy under the Classics label instead (as with Universe Perceptor). However, there is this:

http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Soundwave_%28G1% ... usic_Label

and this

http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Blaster_%28G1%29#Device_Label

...which could be considered legitimate G1 updates for these characters. My guess would be that HasTak consider these, rather than the WFC/FOC toys, being the "proper" updates of their G1 counterparts. Actually, I will add them to the list! I also consider adding cursive letters to characters which have a WFC/FOC incarnation, then people who thinks either way can have their way, so to speak...

In other words, at this point I am only "waiting" for a CHUG Shockwave with either a space gun mode or an Earth Vehicle mode (which we got in Alternators/Binaltech) ;)

Now the only question is how to deal with this guy? :D

I started a thread with a similar idea which is always worth taking a look at?

I created the lists as an aid to get my ultimate Neo-Classics line-up of all characters who gained some screen time throughout all of the regular G1 cartoon seasons.
I hoped it could be of help for anyone wanting to do the same or adjust to their own ideals! ;)

Thanks for the appreciation! There is a fair share of work behind this, after all...

As for WFC/FOC I came up with some thoughts a few posts back, check it out!

I love lists! Nice work, a bit different focus from mine, though. Given that for many fans, G1 is basically synonymous with the Sunbow Cartoon I guess many people will like it ;)

The WFC/ FOC figures seem to be a sleeping question mark in the fandom, even so much as the TFWiki has an ambiguous listing for them instead of a definitive one as done with most others.
I think most people need some form of definitive statement from HasTak about their placement, but we all know that is not going to be forthcoming.

In all truth, getting someone like Chris McFeeley directly involved in this conversation, while not an "official" source, is as close to possible of getting a correct placement within the subcategories in the toy lines.

Again Theo, keep up the good work.

You´re certainly right triKlops, only an official statement would clear the doubt for good. As for now, I will use cursives where a character has a (n official) WFC/FOC incarnation, then everyone can decide for themselves. You are also right about TFWiki, it suggests we should consider most of these designs as pre-Prime, as in, Aligned and not G1, which is another reason I don´t count them as G1.

Anyways, thanks for the appreciation (and the nickname :D), I´ll be sure to keep it up!

/Theo
