Figures you bought, regretted, sold, then regretted that. The ultimate remorse thread.

So the title says it all. What transformers have you had, gotten rid of, and then wished you still had? I'm sure we've all been there.

For me, it's two figures: Masterpiece Megatron, and Hasbro MP Hot Rod (I refuse to call him rodimus since he didn't come with camper). I got each of these figures when they first came out, and was so disappointed with them. The (in hindsight) minor flaws I felt they had just didn't live up to the masterpiece mantle IMHO. Now that I e focused my collecting to pretty much only the MP line, I wish I still had them. They are still light years ahead of the main line stuff. Also, I paid retail cost, and now they go for so much more.

Strangely enough, that happened with some of the Power Core Combiner figures, specifically my first Undertow and Skyhammer.

There was an overabundance of that later wave in the line, and I was teetering for a long time over picking them up. Then someone on the UK sightings thread convinced me, I got them both, they lasted about a week in the flat, I sold them again.

And a month later, felt awful. Of course, they were then more expensive, and Heavytread in particular. Took me another couple of months to get the two back, but haven't regretted re-buying since. :D

OK, 1st thing: Rodimus is NOT A CAMPER. [-(

For me, the most recent figure like this is RoTF Leader Jetfire. I bought him, had him combined with Prime, then wished I hadn't. So I sold them both. Then regretted it. Recently, I've been wanting Jetfire back, and just this week I got him. Even if I get RoTF Leader Prime back (greatest non-MP figure EVER, why the hell did I ever sell him???) I won't combine them. Jetfire will go on my Jetfire shelf, Prime on my Optimus shelf.

Any I've ever parted with, something in me still remembers the fun. In particular, I'll never let myself stop regretting swapping my Shockwave for some other kid's Astro-Magnum - purely to make him shut up and stop following me.

Space started to be an issue when our daughter was born, at this time it was mainly "my" collection. I'd slim down the collection here and there. All of my Transformers were packed up except MPs and a few Leaders. I went back every now and again to check on them, stored in ziplocks in plastic totes. Eventually, I decided to just collect MPs and sell most of them (which I do regret because my daughter really likes TFs now and I give her free reign on all retail purchased figures. MPs are supervision only). I sold off a ton of CHUGs, Prime, movie, and Cybertron toys. It was really those crappy Star Wars crossovers that made me want to sell of my collection. Those this broke just by looking at them, and figured might as well recover funds rather than sit on a pile of broken shiza.

In the midst of this, a Christmas came and we brought a few small gifts for the neighbors kids and the parents kinda gave us a sad story, apparently our small little pile was going to be their 3 boys entire Christmas. So I went back home and removed listings on all New in package TFs, wrapped them, and brought them over. About a 2 weeks later a mutual friend informed me that the parents had no presents to give their kids because they spent all of their money on themselves; and they sold the TFs I had given their kids and did the same. Typically, I don't put much into "talk" like that and I wouldn't have believed it so I brought my little detective over to play ;) "Hey sweety, why don't you ask to play with their new TFs." "OK!"

Sure enough we go over, I sit in the living room with "dad" and can't help but notice the new R2-D2 Xbox360 and every new game that had come out that season...it wouldn't be sooo bad but these games are way beyond their kids level. I go to "check" on the kids, sure enough their rooms are empty save a bed and a pile of clothes and the original gifts we brought over.

Hey man,
Why did you regret combining them, and why didn't you just un-combine them? Were you just disappointed with them? No disrespect intended I'm just curious.

Let me clarify: I didn't regret combining them. I regretted buying Jetfire at the time. Yes, I was disappointed. Jetfire is kind of a mess, and I didn't see him serving any purpose other than Prime's add-on. Prime was just fine by himself, and after I had the combined version, I decided to sell both of them. I should have kept Prime. I recently decided to collect Jetfire figures, and RoTF Jetfire was 1 I wanted to get. This made me think of when I had him before and thus the regret of selling him.

That is a really messed up story. What pieces of sh** the parents are. So sad for the kids. Very generous of you, but they spent the money on themselves, talk about adding insult to injury.

Dude, that totally makes more sense, it is funny my brain interpreted that way. I get the sentence now, the comma portion was an insert, not a progression.

“I bought him, (side note: combined him with Prime), then wished I hadn't bought him.”
I would have written with the commas too, but just funny how I misread it. Thanks for the clarification.

Exactly, I don't regret donating the gifts. I know my intention and what I was trying to do for this family. The end result...well, it is what it is.

G1 Starsaber. First up - hes not a great toy. Secondly - I bought him on a whim.

I had him about 6 months and after that , decided my collection didn't need him - it was post Season3 and I was trying to limit my collection. He was, by all accounts, completely perfect, C10 condition, with box. I won't say how much he cost, but I'll let you imagine it.

I put him on Ebay. 60 watchers overnight. The bids start. I wait... I wait.... End sale price...
£50.

Yeah - I regret selling him. :|

How about figures you sold, regretted, bought again, and regretted again?

ROTF Mindwipe I picked up at Kmart for about $10 more than what most retail stores were carrying him at. It was super impulsive, and I sold him later when I was trying to thin out my movie collection.

Headrobots announced ROTF Mindwipe and DOTM Skyhammer upgrades, I promptly snatched both up, paying another $40 for an MISB Mindwipe. Headrobots basically dropped off the planet, and now I'm still hanging onto MISB Mindwipe, because like hell I'm getting caught flat-footed again.

Oh god, that's the worst, when you don't even sort of get an appropriate amount of money for a figure. It's great when you're the buyer and such a deal is had, but not when you're selling.

I've got a huge list of these regret sellings. I was unemployed for awhile a few years back, right before ROTF, and I sold a lot of stuff to try and raise some cash. I'd been a completionist throughout the A/E/C/movie 1 years, and so I had a lot of stuff that didn't really bug me to get rid of. The Alternators, for example, were still pretty sought after by the collector market, and I'd bought them all and was more or less indifferent, so they landed me some dough.
I sold off some eHobby stuff, and that kind of bugs me still because it was eHobby stuff, but that's really the only reason.
I often find myself lamenting getting rid of a lot of the Animated stuff, and some of the odder figures like ROTF Stratosphere.

But honestly, I'm not sure if I actually regret getting rid of the toys, or if I still feel damages from having to do so because of my unemployment status of that time. I'm after getting some of those back, if I can find them on the cheap and in decent shape, like the Universe Powerglide and Stormcloud figures, and that Target Lio Convoy, and Stratosphere and certain Animated figures, but it may just be some kind of phantom toy syndrome.
Two summers ago, I sold off a bunch of Botcon stuff because my fiancee and I were moving suddenly. Made a bunch of money, but those things I do miss. SG Megatron and Rodimus, the 2006 Laserbeak and Buzzsaw, 07 Huffer and Springer.

For me I suppose the regret is more of the feeling than an actual missing of the toys, as I really only miss some of what I've gotten rid of over the many years. But the thing that never goes away is the feeling, and I really hate that.

Honestly the current MP Megatron is due for an update. I didn't pick him up myself since i didn't like how he was in robot mode too much. I like the X-Transbots Apollyon version so I'll probably shoot for that one. Sure, its not official Takara but it seems to be a more faithful representation of the figure at least for me.

Some ppl hate on "KO"s and I don't collect them for value but for my personal enjoyment, I do have a Quakewave and its easily my favorite out of all the MP figures I have and I have most of them. He seems to have gone up in value considerably but not enough for me to part with such a magnificent figure. I'd most likely let every figure go except for him maybe MP Soundwave which I like a lot too.

My regret? Probably Selling the original MP Starscream since he got pretty expensive so I've just stuck with Thundercracker in hopes of a more reasonable seeker lineup.

I had all three Lio Convoys (white, black, flash) and sold em off. I remember paying like 60, 100, and 150ish for all three, and I sold them in a lot for less that 140. Losing half of what I put in really sucked.

The Lio Convoy mold is something that looks impressive in pics, but in hand its a really unstable figure. I'm a HUUUGE fan of the Beast Era which is why I bought them in the first place, but I sold them off during a time a time in my life when my focus turned towards comics rather than TF's. By the way, selling anything I collect is pretty outlandish since I don't buy anything with intention of selling or making a profit. I only sold a handful of things I knew to be valuable and thought I could live without.

But things come full circle apparently. I'm way hard into TF's again, and even with my reservations of the Lio mold I found myself wanting the trio again. And I eventually got all three again. I was a little frightened when I started hunting again, but thanks to some patience I didn't overpay.

So, I guess the lesson is don't sell anything for a quick buck, or unless you're damn sure you won't miss it.

Yeah, I sold off a couple of Star Wars lego sets I really wish I had kept. Granted, I got good money for them, but now they go for even more, so requiring them is daunting to say the least.

My biggest regret was selling off all my G1 Transformers when I was a kid. I wanted money and had no allowance, so selling them was all I could think of. I sold G1 Powermaster Double Dealer to a friend for $4. Sold the other ones to the same friend. He got a good deal. When 2006 rolled around and I saw the previews for the first movie, I was like, "What was I thinking?" Even more so when I went into stores and saw zero die cast metal and almost zero rubber tires.

Then a few years ago, I bought Universe Ultra Onslaught, Bruticus, Silverbolt, Hardhead, and Deluxe Drift for half price--a couple each except the last two. I thought I shouldn't have so many Transformers and either gave away (as presents to kids) or returned Silverbolt, Hardhead, and Drift. I kept one each of Bruticus and Onslaught but sold the others for just enough to cover my cost with tax. Except for the gifts to kids, which are always worthwhile (their reactions remind you of how magical Transformers were for you as a kid), I regretted those decisions--I ended up liking Drift better than Blurr (which I kept), and I would have liked a big old Silverbolt in my collection, and now I understand why the guy I sold Onslaught and Bruticus to was so excited.

These days I'm torn between so many cool figures being available and things like space and priorities for what to spend my time and money on. I have been meaning to cut down on my collection, but I've been reluctant to spend the time it takes to list everything I have for sale. Part of it is just procrastination, part is wanting to hang onto it and wondering if I'll regret selling. One of these days, though, I suppose I'll have to grow up.

Frankly, I'm not really sure I have any regrets about figures I've sold.

(Plenty of regret on things I have bought...)

I suppose I kind of wish I lived in a world where Alternators were just a little bit better than they were and that I had a reason NOT to sell them.

Alternators meant a huge amount to me when they came out, but that feeling diminished greatly over time. I'd say the potential of Alts to be great is kind of my remorse.
