New CHUG vs Current CHUG....some help.

With the CW and Generations line and how amazing figures are looking, certain ones have been updated which has affected my current collection. I don't group all my TF in their respective lines nor do I have select ones that have representation for a key character like most do. It's just a mesh across the board and I'm fine with that...for now.

Since I don't follow the books/comics I have no real desire to keep or group those select TFs accordingly. Its basically my CHUG collection and everything else. Now I'm tempted to get rid of certain TFs for the newer versions.

Here is the list and it should be obvious on the actual replacement figure:

Igear MGT01 Delicate Warrior
Fansproject City Commander with UM
Universe Roadbuster with Nato-upgrade
Universe Silverbolt-Takara
Energon Superion with FP upgrade
TFCC Breakdown
Universe Drag Strip
Henkei Jetfire - I only with Takara did the same with Leader Jetfire and give him a red visor.
GDO Hot Spot
GDO Swerve

So what do you do with certain characters that get updated, do you keep'em (and find use or cuz your incapable of getting rid of them) or part ways with them? What should I do about these figures? And some comments on any experiences you also had! :VEHI:

Can we PLEASE stop saying " CHUG"? Just say "Classics" when you mean any modern G1 character update. CHUG sounds clunky and unappealing, is a racial slur, and isn't even up to date as an acronym (nor in the right order of release). If you wanted to incorporate all of the various Classics lines from Hasbro and Takara, you should use CUHGUGLU for Classics, Universe 2.0, Henkei, Generations, United, Generations (Takara), Legends, and Unite Warriors (to say nothing of the different subline imprints). Why do that when Classics is so much more elegant, straightforward, and easy to understand for collectors inside and outside the Transformers fandom?

Whoa sorry Wolfman, I didn't mean to offend you. I'm not to thrilled with this term and a bunch of others but its clearly a term often used and I didn't think too much of it. Sorry man. :VEHI:

On one hand, I whole heartedly agree, and typically use "Classics" myself as the catch-all term. But I fear that, for the majority, the "CHUG" name is too entrenched. Even if it is a clunky, inaccurate, and inelegant name.

But for me, "Classics" is, in addition to the term specifically for figures from 2006's Classics toy line, also the catch-all term for figures from succeeding toy lines. If I am referring to a specific figure from a post-Classics line, I will probably try to use that figure's actual toy line. For example, I would call this Universe 2.0 Galvatron:

Image

But this photo, while containing two Universe 2.0 toys, a Generations toy, (part of) a Transformers (2010) toy, and no actual Classics toys, I would refer to it as a Classics group shot:

Image

Anyway, back to the original poster, I am confused what you are actually asking. Are you worried about having duplicate characters in your collection? Are you asking what you should do with the superfluous versions?

If so, and assuming that the figure is in decent condition, I should think the options are as follows, and you don't necessarily have to use the same option for all of your figures:

-Display both if you have the room.
-Put one in storage if you have the storage space.
-Give one to a friend if you have any friends who also collect Transformers.
-Give one to a child you know if that child would enjoy them as toys.
-Sell one. (Make money to buy more figures!)
-Donate one to a thrift store.
-Mail one to me if it is a figure I don't have yet. (I doubt you'll select this option, but can't blame a guy for trying, eh?)

If it isn't in decent condition, you could at least try selling it on eBay as scrap for parts. People are always looking to repair their own broken figures, or looking for parts for customs. So you never know, you might get lucky, make someone's day with the part they need, and make a buck or two on the side.

And what should not ever be an option:

-Throw it out.

That'd be bloody wasteful, it would be. Find another good home for it rather then sending it off to take up space in a landfill somewhere.

I have replaced some my Classics figures on the shelf with new figures.

The Combiner Wars Superion replaced the Classics one and that went into storage. I kept Classics Silverbolt on display next to Superion.
Menasor in displayed and my Classics Dragstrip and Subscription Breakdown will be right there beside him in bot mode.
When I get Defensor, Classics Hot Spot will stay on display as well.

Helpful ideas Yotsuyasan, I'll most likely sell them.

I'm curious SJ21, when you finally get Defensor why still display Hot Spot? And why put your Silverbolt in storage, do you feel the need still and he may serve a purpose or because you don't know what you will do and storage is the place for now? :VEHI:

I keep the figure. Either display it, or put it away in storage until I next rotate my collection around.

For example, I have wfc Prime leadin gmy classics bots. I since got the Evolution of Prime 2 pack an dnow both Primes are leading the charge. I have henkei Megatron, and the IDW Megatron (though these two are currently on different shelves in the current layout). I have Green Giant flanked by the rotf/FP Bruticus on 1 side, and FOC Bruticus on the other (classics Onslaught, the Ultra class, is in storage, but is due a reappearance). And lastly, my 86 movie shelf currently has both classics Galvatron and Mania King looking badass.

Just because I buy a new version of a character, doesn't mean I automatically get rid of the older version which I still enjoy.

You make the various versions fight for shelf supremacy.

SJ21 can still chime in, but I might know part of the reason. Even though they are Transformers and one figure gets you both a robot and a vehicle, I love seeing them together, like when they are displayed at toy fairs. I have CW Superion right now, and I wish I had another set to keep them in bot mode or plane mode at the same time that Superion is combined. It seems silly but I just love them so much. In the cartoons they switch back and forth. Sometimes I want to see both modes or all three modes, but I'm not going to transformer 20 or more toys a day! Two different Hotspots kind of lets you do the same.

Also, I am not trying to recreate any certain line up. I mix and match. So different looking figures with the same name are different characters to me. Some one else once posted about that as well. He made all of the same type to be from the same team. Like a racing team, or work team, or red and white elite jet squad (all of the jetfires). Also what if Soundwave was a surname and they are all related, or all from the same territory, or from the same factory. Sounds like you are collecting the 80s line up and so selling off ones you don't have the need for sounds like the best way to go.

Side note: I call all of the updates Generations. Generations means new generation of our beloved characters, classics are one type of the Generations, Generations are a mixed bag of updates.

Yeah I can understand keeping things on a rotation.

Like I said I got my Classics then there is the rest. I got Animated Arcee but I don't consider that my Classics. I suppose I could have Delicate Warrior in alt-mode (somewhere or next to Classics Arcee) but it would bug me...I know weird. 8-}

The only one I can think of that I have 2 of is Classics Blitzwing. :VEHI:

I used to use a (modified) Animated Arcee in my Classics collection, back in the dark times when it seemed likely we'd never get a proper official one. She was a good stand in for a number of years...

...but I was not sorry to see her replaced, and she's since been put away.

I have also come to a point in my collection that I am now obtaining more then one of a specific character for my classics collection. I have already got rid of Classics Megatron but, I'm now on the fence about getting rid of Onslaught once the new CW Onslaught shows up. I don't know if I want to get rid of the Universe version, I love that mold but, I have no need for more than one Onslaught.

Typically, I would get rid any older version like Universe Powerglide, I had no issues removing him from my list of figures I wanted/searching for. (I have Stormcloud version) so I have no interest in the Universe version.

I would say, get rid of the older version unless you really like the figure like I'm doing with Onslaught. Now I just have to find a way to keep him in my collection, lol

Right on, and while that was your stand in mine was Delicate Warrior. Now just like you Takara Legends Arcee is the one.

BTW you should consider filing down those bits inside her hand that obstruct her pistolas some. I did just that and now she can hold them proper. I wish I had a decent camera/phone to show it off. :VEHI:

BTW maybe you knew and I didn't but that term is even on Urban Dictionary. :VEHI:

CHUG is for people too lazy/dumb to use the actual name of the actual toyline they want to talk about.

So what term do we use when we want to talk about all of the related toylines? The Classics / Universe / Generations toys that are the old G1's and the like revisited with modern tech that aren't MP's or Alternators/Binaltech?

Or for people who can't keep track of which specific Classics Universe Generations RTS CW LMNOP line each and every dadblasted figure they have came from.

I don't think it being some extremely obscure racial slur is a valid reason to not use it though, inadequate as it's become. Context. You can still say "chink in the armor" because in that context it's not a slur. In TF context CHUG is not a slur. Not that anyone would have ever heard of it as a slur in the first place if not for someone complaining about it. To most people chug is something college kids do to a beer. It's bad enough we can't even have Slag anymore...

"It's in my car." Is a fine statement. You don't have to say "it's in my station wagon" or "mini-van" or "suv" or "pick-up truck" or "two door sports car" or etc.

I have never said or written CHUG, but to call people lazy or dumb for using the term is offensive. Some people are just trying to describe a type of toy by different names. Sabrblade started a whole thread about the term, I think it was discussed for three or four pages.

Valandar wrote:So what term do we use when we want to talk about all of the related toylines? The Classics / Universe / Generations toys that are the old G1's and the like revisited with modern tech that aren't MP's or Alternators/Binaltech?

Just call them all Generations. They are the newest Generation of toys from the characters we know.

Yeah, I can see that. But seeing as I was having a beer when I typed my post, my mind went there first.

On topic- I've sold my old Universe 2.0 Silverbolt. He's replaced with CW Silverbolt. And I still got Darkwing, so I still have the mold.
