So, I've never bothered with the HOC releases as I've been mostly keeping up with the SCF acts from Takara.
How do they compare? I am having issues getting Paradon Medic and noticed that the HOC line has one. Is it of similar quality, size, etc?

I've only got SFCs myself so I'm not sure about the actual figures in terms of materials and paint aps. The biggest difference that I'm aware of is that you don't get the clear display base with the HOC figures. Doesn't bother me as I keep all my non transforming figs from various lines together sans bases anyway.

I don't use the bases either. Someone here must have gone for the HOC line and the SCF line.

So theres no point getting both and I can mix and match as I please without anyone being able to tell the difference?
Good news!

Heroes of Cybertron / Super Collection Figure
They are 3 inch PVC figures. HOC by Hasbro and SCF by Takara.

Theyre cheap and awesome. A box of 12 SCFs used to be like 4 or 5 bucks. They included Chase figures for some extra fun. I've seen acts 3-10 online still for 4ish on some of the more obscure sites.
Heres a link to a pretty comprehensive SCF listing. I think he has them all covered except for the Mega SCF line.

Heroes of Cybertron (Western version) and Super Collection Figure (Jap version). They were small non transforming pieces that were released a few years back. The SCFs were supplied blind box and had some chase figures that came in parts amongst the regular figures. The SCFs covered G1 and Armada Characters while the HOCs were not the full line and only included select G1 figures. The only ones that I'm aware of that the US got that Japan didn't were a convention exclusive 6 pack with Starscream, Thundercracker, Skywarp and 3 generic Seekers (just the generics that weren't available in Japan. Japan also got the Mega SCFs, larger articulated non transforming figures with additional pieces allowing you to swap out hands and heads and various accessories. For example G1 Megatron came with a little Laserbeak that could perch on his shoulder and his energon mace and Rodimus came with the Matrix, a saw hand and a head with telescopic visor all referencing scenes from the animated movie.

There actually was a JP Thundercracker in ACT 4.
There was a Skywarp as well. I think he was some type of Lucky Draw item though.

The HOC line also has a clear non painted spot in the back of the head's of the figures so light shines in and causes the figures eyes to glow - the SCF does not have this feature. Haven't decided if it is cool or not, on the one hand you have glowing eyes if the light comes in the right way - on the other you have a bald patch on the figures head!
One thing I did notice - I have Thundercracker from the SCF line and also from the Seeker Jet pack from HOC and I found the paint app on the HOC to be better quality and the lower arms on the HOC are painted a grey against the black of the SCF line and it goes better - the HOC Thundercracker would be my preferred one to go for of those two figures. Have not got a direct comparison of anyother figures so can't say if this type of stuff extends across all the figures available in both SCH and HOC lines.

Hmm well I saw them Bonger. And they do look alright to me, but not as cool as you say they were, but a good figure indeed. I don't know which ones are better, but I don't like Takara at all

But for 3.99 for a pack of 12, 33 cents each, how can you go wrong?
