TakaraTomy have just announced their latest Masterpiece Transformers addition, MP-14+ Alert Anime Color Edition. Instead of a straight up reissue of Masterpiece Red Alert, TakaraTomy have repainted MP-14 to closer match its on-screen representation in what has been a quite divisive strategy. While some are pleased to be able to get Masterpiece Alert at what they hope will be less than second hand market prices, others are concerned about the implications of this new Anime colour initiative by TakaraTomy.

I have mixed feelings about MP-14+ Red Alert. One the one hand, I usually do prefer the "anime accurate" decos for characters where possible, but I allow for some leeway too. For instance, I'm perfectly fine with the darker red and blue used for MP-10 Optimus as compared to the brighter colors usually used on his animation model. On the other hand, I do like the colors used on MP-14+. The off-white/gray for the car body, the brighter red, the gray thighs, even the "chief" tampographs on his arms, are all welcome changes. However, I hate the use of the Sunbow Autobot symbol in place of the standard one we've had for decades. I also don't like that details like the headlights, Lamborghini logo, Countach logo, etc., are now missing. They're small touches that add to the "Masterpiece" status of the figure and, I think, don't detract at ALL from an "anime-accurate" look. I agree, Maz, that this new anomaly in the Masterpiece line is irksome and worrisome. Maybe Takara will take some feedback on this before it hits mass production?
