Actually DM, I really like your head-cannon. It would make a lot of sense if the holder (SW, Blaster) took on the attributes of their cassettes while stored. ;)^

Yeah, I always thought that would make a good "ability". With Soundwave, Ravage would give him cloaking abilities and let him hack into any computer, Rumble would let him release a short but powerful seismic wave, Laserbeak would act as a built-in "battle computer" feeding him with environmental information and taking partial control of his weapons systems, Ratbat would allow him to drain energy from any source, Flip Sides would (as mentioned) allow him to mimic any voice or sound, and Frenzy would enable him to enter a sort of "berserk mode" ala Doom.

As for Blaster...hmm. Rewind would function as an internal Wikipedia (except far less unreliable), Eject would give him increased athletic/acrobatic abilities, Ramhorn would allow him to emit a much weaker form of Rumble's seismic pulses and Steeljaw would act like a combination lock-on/GPS device. Rosanna, meanwhile, would have no useful abilities whatsover...aside from containing Blaster's entire collection of music from across the cosmos on her hard drive, thus making her the cassette he has the most reservations about ejecting.

So I got this today....

If y'all might recall, I went on a crazy Cassette hunt this year and this was always on the hit list. I didn't snatch it up to capitalize on poor Chester, but I was spurred to move it up the list in case it goes up in price.

And unfortunately, I have to report that it doesn't feel great. Not quite KO quality, but pretty close. Ratbat's ears are floppier than any other copy I own, Soundwave's plastic just looks off in general, and one of Ravages legs popped off! I was able to push it back together with a set of pliers, but still. Not all that thrilled :(

Yeah, that has to be the weakest of all the cassette sets. And it didn't have to be, even with the "gold" concept. Maybe if they used some black stickers or tampos, or some gold chrome stickers to mix it in with the flat gold plastic.

It's not so bad if you mix them in with other cassettebots/cons.

That's something I forgot to mention, he has no stickers! I'm not sure how good the stock stickers would have suited this version of Soundy, but damn. He's so boring as is. If you look at my pic, I put my own Repro's (clear white outlined Con symbols) on. Compared to having nothing, I think they added a lot.

But anyways, he should have come with a custom black/gold set of his OG stickers.

With the bodies being so similar (or identical) some stickers would help a lot wouldn't they.

I was just about to buy the 2nd lot of Dino Cassettes from KOtoys when they went pearshaped - I did try to order them on ioffer but my anti-virus had a screaming blue fit at the pages I wanted to buy from - so I thought "Nope not buying on there" so I never did get the other Dino cassettes or the Headmasters I wanted. shame really.

(edit) apparently I couldn't spell 'Pear' that day.

Ratbat's ears have always been terrible. The one I have now the ears aren't even on it and I'm fine with that.

I'm kinda surprised Reprolabels never made a sticker sheet for LP Soundwave; it seems like he was made for them. Even if they went with a mix of black and gold chrome; anything to break up the monotony of the colour scheme.

I think the second worst tape set are the Year of the Horse ones. On their own they aren't too bad, if somewhat boring, but Soundwave himself is just terrible. At one point Chimungmung had them on their own, but I had bought the set for the tapes before then. While a good sticker set could probably save Linkin' Park Soundwave this one has no hope. But I do like the tapes themselves better.

I actually really liked Goatwave. He's weird sure, but it's the weird stuff I usually gravitate towards. There is one thing about him though I hated: his eyes. The eyes is one solid piece of red plastic, that is obviously bigger than than just the visor. But because of the clear head, you can see that red right through his forehead. So I pulled it apart, and painted everything not visor, silver. Now, the only red you see - is visor 8-)

The mod there does improve him a lot, but I still feel that he's pretty weak overall. In robot mode the clear pieces seem almost random. Maybe if they had painted the head and body there could be something interesting there, but he's definitely weak overall. To me.

If his torso & helmet was Brown/orange then That would have helped; the torso and tape door being the same could looks weird.

The Optimus is a bit better.

Fingers crossed a Shattered Glass MP Soundwave makes it's way out someway or other. so long as it's not £180 or some such idiocy.

I think the LP Gold Soundwave being opaque would very much benefit from stickers - If someone has yet to make them for him - I'd say start campaigning for them to be made. he's plainess is the only thing putting me off buying them.

I think under-decoration seems to be a recurring issue with Soundwave toys it was a problem with Music Label 'Wave and with MP wave too.. the lack of the grills on his shins is especially noticeable.

Getting a Soundwave is very much on my to do list I still don't have one - even though I have lots of his cassettes including the goat powered ones.

I came really close many a time to getting a Soundblaster too.
But as I said the one I really really want is the shattered one so I may just wait for that to be made.

I also rather like the Korean red colours - but the chances of someone making that in some way are pretty low. I also need to get a Two Cassette Bay repaint of Twincast mould in Blaster colours and Soundblaster mould in Soundwave colours too that existed.

The shattered G1 set is very appealing to me too - but I'll have to hope for a good price on that as I want to be able to play with it so I don't want to pay to much for it as then i'd be tempted to never open it at all (so therefore there isn't a lot of point buying it then).

But I like Cassettes I get them from time to time when the bug to get them bites me.

I -desperately- need that Cobalt Sentries pack. I'm betting it'd set me back £500 or something though.

Nah nowhere near that. Typically 150ish USD. I missed out on one a year ago for like 50..... still kills me. Only reason I don't have the set yet is I'm holding out for 100 USD. I'm close to crumbling though

At TFNation they had a bunch of cassettes for sale (alongside some nifty G1 Insecticons). Had they had a Flip Sides I would have bought it, but alas no.

So, there's a few new additions to Cassette-tron master list:

Image

Image

Weird, out of left field, and actually kind of lame (even though its still cool). First off, who even knew they could produce these molds? What else do they have lyin around?

It's pretty neat that these were made. But I say lame, because... seriously? The Dino-cassettes are a set of four, they needed four cassettes for these two sets, and they released the same two just in different colors.

But I just realized while typing... that between both sets... you can make a duo of OG colors, and a duo of new weird candy colors. Think they planned that? :-?

I love me some cassettes. I'm planning on getting the Bumblebee toy tie-ins just to get my hands on them.

I foolishly sold of my Kiss Players cassettes (Rosanna, Sundor, and Glit) and my e-Hobby Cobalt Sentry cassettes (Howlback and Garboil.) I've been kicking myself for close to ten years. Fortunately, I was able to get a Glit on his own last year. I honestly think Glit is my favorite cassette--something about his character's getting drunk and singing karaoke. I just find it highly humorous.
