Repaints
Remolds!

Have you ever come across a bot that is better than its original design?
So cool, in fact, you HAD to get it?
Even forsaking the first little dude or chick because the new version is so much more tasty?

Tell us.
Cause I do that all the friggin time!

Personally I wouldn't mind getting the Henkei or United decos of the Classics Voyager Megatron with the "Nerf gun" mode. Even the platinum edition of the mold is tempting to me too as well.

I know when I got my movie Megatron's I focused on the Revenge of the Fallen "Gathering at the Nemesis" Megatron because I disliked the first release's blues and what not. The grey one looked better to me personally. That was actually why I got the Leader class Premium movie Megatron that came out and got rid of the original "blue" leader one. Just something about the blue didn't jive with me I guess, plus I liked the Premium's transformation noise better.

The main one that jumps to mind is Generations Chromia from Prime Arcee. Doubt I'll ever bother getting Arcee but I think Chromia is awesome and wouldn't mind more repaints/remolds of her at all.

Well I'm skipping TR Sentinel Prime in favor of Astrotrain. And Chromia is way better than PRiD Arcee, I have both but if I could only have one it would be Chromia.

Armorhide! The original use of the mold (Landmine) had bright sky blue accents -- the idea is kinda neat (Allspark power that turned an background vehicle in the movie into a Transformer) but the execution was lacking. Plus, Landmine looks sorta... dead. Much prefer Armorhide's military colors.

I'm gonna be getting Astrotrain instead of Sentinel due to budget constraints, and I enjoy Astrotrain's look much more than Sentinel's. I also skipped CW Hot Spot and went with Onslaught, as I liked the look of Onslaught a whole lot more, and I really wanted a good-looking Bruticus.

Also I find this Megatron

Image

Superior to the original one

Image

That's just my preference though because the first one I linked to was more of an homage to G1 Megs.

Your not alone. Surprised no one brought up that toy on that top 5 megatron list. But wasnt there another redeco of that mold that was purple? That one was pretty cool too.

And thanks for this guys, I am working on some lists concerning redecos and remolds. I will reveal one here: TAV 30 Grimlock. That retooling is phenominal and really improves on that FOC Grimlock mold. It even improves the shoulder transformation and it makes it look as if that mold was made for the RID Grimlock all along (if you didnt know it was a retool).

Don't see how we can talk Repaints without mentioning the TF Club, given all their releases are repaints, and some are real Gems. Punch/Counterpunch from Universe 2.0 Sunstreaker/Sideswipe was genius, if not the most logical use of that mold and Botcon 2014 Flamewar is one of my fave Club toys using BH Arcee beautifully.

grimdragon2001 wrote:Don't see how we can talk Repaints without mentioning the TF Club

I assumed we were only talking first party toys (ie Hasbro or Takara and not a licensee) and toys that were released wide at retail. Club toys are more apart sicne they can only be redecos due to Hasbro licensing out the molds to them. There is no difference between talking about Club toys vs talking about repaints but there is a difference in taking about repaints and talking about club toys (one is inclusive while the other is exclusive). But I could have been wrong in my assumption.
Then again, there is nothing that says we cant talk of club toys in the discussion, so yeah bring it on.

Is Flamewar the one you like best? What about the recent Reflector toy. That one is interesting since it was supposed to be a retail release, so the line gets blurred even more.

Oh adn does anyone think that the G2 redecos of the combiner wars figures are better than the original decos?

There was no memo, I just assumed since no one had brought it up yet, but its all good ;)^

The one I would like to have would be that homage to G2 Dreadwing using the ROTF Mindwipe mold.

Yes, I do think it was a Japanese release actually, part of United. Supposedly like Hero Megatron/Archforce from G2. Personally I love United's Nerf Gun Megatron paint job more than Henkei's. Not to say that both are bad or anything like that.

I am in the market for an FOC Grimlock still actually, but I'll need to research TAV 30 Grimlock then on that note. I'll poke around later though. Thanks for that tip.

I forsake all others!

Image
I know they overdid it a bit, but come on. I actually modded the original to have the Laser guts. Did you know they actually remoulded it slightly to prevent this? It's true. Had to go at it with an xacto knife.

Image
An oldie? Sure. But a goodie. Best colouration of the mould. Why didn't they do these exact colours for the Superlink version is beyond me.

Image
I like clear guys. And I like this scene from the movie. I mixed these guys with the new Platinum set (and other versions in the background) for a display of mine. I really love this set.

Image
And this one purely for the vehicle mode.

A few suggestions here...

I'm leaving out instances of strictly superior Japanese decos. My choices are based on re-decos of a base mold that should warrant a second look:

Energon Landquake (right)
Image

Energon Quickstrike
Image

Energon Dark Crumpezone
Image

Transformer Go! Bakudora (right)

Transformers Go! Hunter Ratchet (right)

Arms Micron Wildrider (right)

I would add arms micron Ironhide to that list. Really fleshes out that mold better.

If we're talking that Wheeljack mold, you can't NOT mention the Radioactive Día de Muertos Vampire Luchador:
Image
"YoU'vE reaCHeD a DEAD END, aUtObotSSssss...."
Image
"YOu ToO, hOOmannnn...."

The "Slicer"/Dark Energon Wheeljack was pretty neat, too. Hell, I just like that they kept taking radically different takes with the re-uses.

I want to get that Hunter Ratchet, but count him as someone else given how little he resembles Ratchet.

(also, I always forget Sky Byte and Scourge were even repaints...)

You posted a pic of RTS Lugnut, was he a repaint of another toy? I thought he was the first use of that mold.

Also, hell yeah for Razorclaw, and that is a super smart choice with Powerglide. Its true (and a little silly) that he wasnt red at first.

No one mentioned the G2 combiners from combiner wars yet. I remember the eibertron twincast podcast choosing G2 superion as the best combiner out there so far.

Also, I see people throwing out these takara decos as better than the Hasbro one and while i totally agree, I dont think they are considered repaints. Like Classics Megatron. Takara never released the nerf gun colours so their silver version (United) is their version of that toy, its not a redeco. The new red translucent one is a redeco of the Hasbro one and the Henkei one is a redeco of the united one but I dont think we can claim an initial takara version to be a redeco of the Hasbro one. Because then that would be like saying that Legends Tankor is a redeco of Generations Tankor, which doesnt make any sense, right? They are just different decos but not a redeco of the other.

Universe 2.0. He was a Hasbrotoyshop exclusive. They also released the deluxe Classics Optimus mold and repaints of Classics Mirage and Grimlock as Dragstrip and Overkill. Came in fancy boxes too.

Thanks! I actually own that Dragstrip and while it has info and images of who else is in that line, I didnt know it was this Megatron since the pics on the box are in black and white. Also, I didnt know the Grimlock mold was Overkill in that line. Thanks ;)^

Oh and repaints better than the real thing there is all of machine wars. While Optimus isnt better than Thunderclash, that Starscream is awesome.

And Universe cheetor using the best one of his beast machines mold in an actual yellow deco:

And dont know if he counts since its the first Hasbro outgin but daaamn

Lastly, I really really like these two Cloud redecos:

I would say Shockwave becomes a better toy than his mold mate while I dont know if Rodimus is better than Springer.
