btw the Wiki may be wrong on the retooling itself, as the tail piece needs those tabs to secure it for Dragon, Car, and Jet modes. It's the slots in the wing piece that are new.
btw I adore the Devilsaurer/"Iron Mammoth"/Gryphon mode.

And I believe you are 100% correct in that assessment.
I pulled down my R.I.D Galvatron to compare, with the Gigatron gallery here, and yes, the tooling is in fact the slots in the wing piece to secure the elephant trunk / nosecone / dragon tail in place for elefant mode.
The hand mode shows this best in the galleries:
Notice the complete circular sculpting on each side of the peg hole in the middle of Gigatron's wing section:

And in Devil Gigatron / R.I.D Galvatron, the circular portions are cut in half, and slots are now visible there.

Without those slots it relies solely on the friction of the tail joint to keep it in place. Which on mine is pretty tight, but still the tabbing in still helps.
One more reason I love Ryan's galleries and that make the galleries and invaluable resource IMHO. There's always an angle that will let you see that obscure section of a toy you need to see.
