The mold is amazing (Nitro/Thundercracker) but I chose to use Skullsmasher's Titan Master on Nitro's body and it is perfect. I chose to use Nitro's head on TM Megatron and it's epic.

That being said I plan to swap out Thundercracker's head. Anyone thinking the same and if so some ideas? I'm considering LG Bullhorn...anyone? :VEHI:

I picked up the first two Leader Class figures from the Studio Series line over the last few days. They're both fantastic, in my opinion, and easily the best versions of Grimlock and Blackout respectively from the live action movie franchise.

Blackout is the leader sized figure we've wanted for 11 years. He looks great in robot mode, the paint and detailing is well done. The sculpting is excellent, especially the face. He's nice and bulky, like he should be. The helicopter alt-mode is impressively big. It's a huge freaking toy for a Transformer that isn't a city or other base of operations. I do have some nitpicks, though. It's unfortunate that he's just a little bit "partsformer" with the tail piece having to be unpegged from the back of the helicopter and put onto Blackout's arm, but I don't really see a better way of doing that. It's also a shame that the back half of the helicopter is so hollow from the bottom. I can understand a little to hide Scorponok in there, but is a bigger gap than it needs to me. Speaking of Scorponok, he looks pretty great too. He's nicely scaled, well painted, and has just enough articulation for a mini-figure. It's too bad he doesn't transform, but then again, he never actually did in the movies. Even his Deluxe and Legends/Legion toys from 11 years ago just kind of stood up awkwardly. Perhaps the biggest issue with Blackout is that a lot of the outer shell of the helicopter is made out of panels that don't want to line up and with one another and tab together securely. The plastic seems to be a bit too soft and the tolerances aren't quite up to the task of achieving what was originally designed. Still, Blackout is a must have for anyone's movie collection, despite its flaws.

Grimlock is pretty amazing. We've had a LOT of Grimlocks of all shapes and sizes since Age of Extinction, but this is the first one so far to get the colors COMPLETELY RIGHT! He's a nice dark gray with green "patina" dry-brushing for a very accurate on-screen look in both robot and T-Rex mode. Now, do the rest of the movie Dinobots like this, Hasbro! Please! I found the Transformation to be interesting and not overly confusing or complex. Neither mode is completely without kibble, but what the engineers did to minimize it is truly admirable. I've noticed some people complaining about not every flap or piece in dino mode securely snapping into place. They honestly don't need to, however. Every piece that is unsecured stays in place by friction alone. Even that rubbery flap under the tail holds up well. You can curve the sides upward to give the tail a more natural contour on the bottom, and it stays in place without much effort. Even the fake T-rex head halves at the thickest part of the tail aren't too distracting. In robot mode, Grimlock stands nice and tall over ALL of the others, though, of course, he should be MUCH MUCH taller to be truly screen accurate. The scaling as is still works very well. There's some kibble too in robot mode, most noticeably the dino jaw and little T-Rex arms just having out on the back of Grimlock's left upper arm, but again, they blend well enough, thanks mostly to the paint job. Again, this Grimlock is the one to have for your movie collection. Any other version doesn't even come close.

This brings me to a question for everyone. It seems that Wave 2 will not have any new Leader Class figures. Maybe it'll just be repacks of Grimlock and Blackout for now, or maybe they'll be announced a little later, coming directly after Megatron and Brawl in numeric sequence. At any rate, what can Hasbro and Takara do for future Leader Class characters for the Studio Series line? A redeco of Blackout as Grindor would be obvious, but then what? A new Jetfire mold? Slash? Slug? Strafe? Is there anyone else that needs to be that big compared to most of the rest of the cast? Will we get any more smaller characters, like Scorponok or even smaller? We gotta have the Arcee sisters at some point, as well as Frezny, Ravage, Wheelie, Brains, Laserbeak, and Squeaks. Maybe they'll be little bonus figures that come with other larger characters down the line. Or maybe a bunch of them will be sold together in a special multi-pack? The Studio Series has me really excited again for movie figures. I really hope Hasbro and Takara can keep this up for a while so we can fill out the Transformers casts for the first five movies without any big omissions.

Va'al wrote:We have some more news for you hailing from the Transformers Studio Series toyline - specifically, the Optimus Prime figure in Voyager size class. According to site owner Seibertron, there appears to be a variant of the mold out at retail with some more accurately translucent orange 'battle blades' as seen in the fight scenes in the Transformers live action movies, especially with Revenge of the Fallen.

In Seibertron's words:

Original wave has a less translucent orange blade (73461) while second release has a much more translucent blade (80171). Those codes are the stamped codes found on back of box.

Take a look at your own Autobot leader, and let us know which version you have! Are you more interested in either of the two variants? Is this enough to make you double-dip? Join the conversation in the Energon Pub, and share your thoughts.

I can't find a stamped code on the back of my Prime's box but there's one of the bottom but it says 80201.

Not sure how to measure how transparent they are.

Looks good. Starscream still looks sufficiently bigger and bulkier than that Prime to make it work. I had a look on eBay but the only official ones are well over £100. Though I see what is likely a KO from China for £21.
Also a UK seller is selling the 'mechtech' trailer for about £20.

Trying to give a gun to my Studio Prime but can't seem to fit regular 5mm port weapons into right hand. They fit into his left one quite tightly but I just can't fit one into the right fist at all. Anyone else have this issue?

Here's a better picture, with Starscream's legs fully extended. He is still quite a bit taller than Optimus Prime.

Studio Series Grimlock...
I'm sort of up and down about him. Some things are unbelievable, others are irritating.

First off, he looks amazing in both modes.
In bot mode at first I thought his articulation was limited, but after playing around I could see he's capable of many fun poses. I'm not crazy about the mace hand, but it's growing on me. And I hate one-piece groin plates, but it actually didn't get in the way too much.

Rex mode is a little more limited. The legs can be sort of static, and the head is disappointing. No neck swivel, hinge at the head, and only the lower jaw moves with a one notch hinge. And most annoyingly, his back skirt piece makes up the bottom of the tail, which does not secure at all. It's just friction, and (on my copy anyways) it isn't strong enough to stay together and flops down.

Strangely even with his limitations, I really like him. I'll repeat that he looks phenomenal, and is worlds above previous Bay Grims. If you're already a fan of the concept, you'll probably be happy with him.

Nope! It's a sword from AOE/TLK Leader Prime, more specifically a limited giveaway from (I think) TRU Japan.

He looks pretty fantastic, best paint apps of that mold I think. Man where can I get one of these without spending 100$ lol. I want one.

I joked earlier that I'd pick up Studio Series Optimus Prime if you gave me $30, but I went ahead and bought him anyway tonight during a Target run after work. My curiosity was piqued with a few online video reviews. Plus, I wanted to get his diorama since I'm collecting all the others. I don't know if I'll keep this version of Optimus, but it's fun so far. The transformation was unique, and I was able to figure out most of it on my own. The positioning of the fists when forming the nose of the truck cab tripped me up for quite a bit. There's only one way they can go to let everything snap together tightly. I still have the same problems with the figure aesthetically, though. The colors aren't quite right, the paint apps are too sparse and not screen accurate in some cases, and the chest is just disappointing. The sword accessories are quite nicely done. I got the "more transparent" version, I believe. Here's a comparison with Movie Advanced Revenge Optimus Prime.

Makes me wish we had a Deluxe Knight Optimus just to go with Grimlock, they look almost the right size together. I suppose Legend would be the best size, but an OP the size of Bee wouldn't be bad.

That Studio Series Optimus impress me more and more. Appart the black spot on the chest, making a voyager compress to almost deluxe size in vehicle mode is quite impressive. Also, compared to the Battle Blade Optimus Movie Advanced, who is of a similar color scheme, it's kinda hard for me to decide who look the best. Seriously, both have good and bad points, balancing each others out. Seriously, I think I might go for that Optimus after all.

Also, one wondered if SS Optimus would be compatible with the Movie Trilogy deluxe trailer and I can tell it will be. At worst, with some minor modding on the trailer. ;)^

I'm fine with the Optimus mold and after finally seeing one in person Thursday morning at Walmart on my way home from work I found I didn't mind the black part on his chest either (it looks tiny in person). But that metallic red, almost magenta, is a no-sell for me. Hopefully that mystery Optimus we found out is coming fixes this if it's the same mold.

Do those truck panel bits on the forearms of the Revenge slide up there? They're down on his right (our left) arm and mostly up on the other arm.

I ordered me the KO of the Revenge figure as I'd like to see it person (if it's a good KO like some others I've purchased in past).

The SS sure does have the better feet. Guess that was one transformation from the RotF Leader mold they couldn't downscale properly for that Voyager mold. Shoulder pads too look better on the SS figure. But that chest on the Revenge is definitely more accurate with the silver visor bits above it which the SS doesn't have (well it sorta does but they're very short and don't stick out at all so are almost invisible) but SS has better stomach area, more detailed too. Also Revenge wins the truck mode and it's smokestacks. I may end up keeping both figures if I like the Revenge KO. I'm keeping my custom AoE and TLK Voyagers anyways. I don't actually like owning multiple figures of the same character but I do love movie Prime (and Bee) so I guess I ignore the rule there.

Yep! I paid full price for my first Nitro and would have stopped there. But then I found my second one on clearance for $13, couldn't pass it up. I do regret not buying the other 3 at that price. Then came SS Thundercracker and I just had to have at least 2. That is where I currently am. I will probably show restraint from here out, but will peek at TRU as the discounts keep dropping. You never know.

That's a cool lil squadron you're making. I haven't even seen either figure yet. I did look for Nitro during TLK but anything past Wave 1 was a pain in the butt to find so skipped it. I would buy Thundercracker seeing as it's part of the SS line I'm currently collecting but again not a figure I expect to easily find here especially with Toys R Us having closed down a few months ago. There's SS figures I have higher priority at the moment but if I can find TC and at an affordable price I'll get one. :)
