Had to do some digging through Google to find the pic. Looks like it's been simplified a little, I'd be surprised if final design looks quite like that. Remember this from Age of Extinction?
I think it's the same idea, just some less cluttered and more kid friendly art to sell toys. I'm sure the movie CG will be more gritty and detailed. The antennas have always been there, it's just a matter of how much they want to draw attention to them.
As for why he'd go from a tank to a little VW Bug: peace. Sure, there were other wars, but just like how VW distanced themselves from war machines it seems Bee literally took their lead.
