At the same time, however, I've already got more than one Optimus Prime and I try (often failing!) to stay at one version of each character, maybe two for the big guys like Optimus and Megatron, as I got their Siege and TR selves. So while I absolutely love the look on Galaxy Convoy I'm not sure if I should break my own rule.
See, now that i have a large portion of the more "regular" cast members in toy form, I try to buy only 1 version of a mold, unless it makes complete sense and I am lacking both, like how I have Sideswipe and Red Alert as I did not have a generations version of either.
Now when it comes to Prime, I end up getting what i think is cool and what is unique. I bought the Battlecore Prime form CW for his head and unique colors, and he makes a kickass super combiner. I did not get powermaster Prime or the retail Prime in TR, but i got the black and red G2 Prime from the boxset and i got super Ginrai/Magnus Prime to combine with Godbomber. I got PotP Prime cause he has Orion and he is essentially a MP in robot mode. I got the retail Siege Prime for an in-scale good Prime, and then this Galaxy Prime is a whole other concept, a power up armor based from the UT, so he is justified by being a totally unique design. It's also why i am getting Star Convoy, because it is in a way a different take and he's one of the Legendary Japanese G1 Leaders, so he will go with my near complete Supreme Commanders lineup.
All that to say: I think you should go for it. The alt mode and the super robot mode are unique from your regular Primes, and represent a different universe Prime, or even a totally different G1 take on him. He is far unique enough from Siege voyager Prime to be worth having both.
And his head sculpt kills. Prime needs more head sculpts with yellow/gold and/or silver.
