The only RiD figure I own is Gigatron, which I acquired maybe four months ago? Oh, man. Do I ever love that toy. I didn’t even know that any redecos of him existed, excluding that white Galvatron (which I plan on getting soon). Too bad they’d be beyond expensive to get my hands on.

Even without having played with other RiD figures, I completely get why Gigatron gets the top spot. It’s such an amazing toy.

RiD might not be in my personal wheelhouse, but this is another well put together list. ;)^

I feel a bit bad for Robots in Disguise 2001, sandwiched between the Beast Era and the Unicron Trilogy. It really does deserve more love.

My list would be...

5. Landfill.

4. All three Autobot Brothers.

3. Optimus Prime.

2. Rail Racer.

1. megatron.

To be honest, the top 3 are practically as awesome, I just needed to put an order and I did what I felt personally.

I can agree with RR as #2, even though he is a personal #1, only because he's top heavy as all get outvand now almost 20 years later Midnight Express's knees are wearing out on at least some of them (mine included)

Honestly, taking a look at my RID 2001 shelf, there's not t toy there I don't like. I don't own the entire toyline, but overall there doesn't seem to be a truly awful toy in the bunch.

Yes, and he's a G1 combiner that's aged quite well. The modifications they made so he's completely self-contained while combined are rather awesome, too.

Forgive my ignorance, but what modifications? I've been under the impression that they were simply repaints, like the Seacons in BWII

Actually, Bruticus ia a red, Cereberus style Dog Predacon. The Combiner based on G1 is Ruination. Any retooling was mold repair, that figure is still straight up G1 with accessories

All of the individual weapons have been modified to be able to combine into two large weapons. The ramp can also now store on the back. You can also stick Mega-Octane's robot-mode chest plate onto the back of Rollbar, although I don't know if you could do that with Swindle for the original set.

You can see the ramps attached to the back and both combined weapons. It's really cool!

Great list WJ! I didn’t like the cartoon but loved these figures. I’ll always regret not getting Rail Racer. Alas, my Round Table paupers salary at the time did not allow it.

So many characters from this line are just packed with fun playability. Megatron’s modes, super combined modes, lights, sounds, super cool original combiners like the construction team, who combine in three different ways.

So much originality. So much fun. So much win.

Thanks again dude these lists are always a great time machine. ;)^ :rodimusstar:

Dammit, I'm sorry. I got fixated on 'Bruticus' since my version of Ruination is a repaint in addition to being a remold.

I don't know anything about RID 2001 Bruticus. Bad toy, I'm gonna guess?

To quote the wiki.

The main retooling to Baldigus involves him now being able to assemble two hand-held super-weapons using all of the weapons and accessories from all of the component robots. He also has a full back now owing to the ability to store his ramp on his cannon-backpack thanks to a new 5 mm post-hole in the cannon-base and new 5 mm post on the ramp underside. It's spiffy. This same functionality also lets him use the ramp as a (somewhat awkward) hand-held shield.

Okay, retooling? I mean it is a change to the mold, right?

As a collector who just recently picked up railracer, I do agree with him being 3rd and not higher. Although a great figure he is a bit fidley compared to the others. Might say 4th but Megs is a bit fidley himself.

RID is a fiddly line in general. Its the first line of realistic transformers vehicles to ever use the advancements from the beast era (like ball joints and such) so there were some growing pains in the form of fiddliness.

Yup. My initial comment was more of a joke since you said you have a bunch of RID toys and none of them are bad so I guess that meant you didn't have this guy

Re: The first "evil black Optimus/Convoy" redeco - Little known fact: It was actually BotCon 1996 Beast Wars Onyx Primal who was the very first "evil black Optimus/Convoy" redeco, but his deco just never caught on like Copy Convoy's black/gray/teal deco did.

Re: Ruination's retooling - In addition to the retooling of the Japanese Baldigus version's weapons and peg holes, the Hasbro Ruination version went even further with additional retooling:

Mega-Octane:
Mega-Octane also got some further retooling, most notably his rifle barrel was shortened considerably (likely for safety reasons), but furthermore his cannon/backpack now attaches via larger 5mm pegs, plus a new rectangular peg was added to the cannon-stand to better secure it in "battle station" mode. The cannon's twin barrels are also filled in all around, presumably for aesthetic reasons. His shoulders were also changed from clicky ratchet joints to friction-based ones that pop apart if excessive force is applied. All subsequent releases of this toy from Hasbro or Takara/Sonokong (including the Generation 1 Combaticon reissue) used this version of the tooling as the base.

Rollbar:
For reasons unknown, the large cannon also got some extra retooling, extending a meaningless detail on the left side of the barrel.

And later on, Movor got retooled for both of the Walmart-exclusive redeco giftsets, with his nosecone becoming even more blunted.

The Megatron figure was also really cool. I think it should've been retooled into Deathsaurus at some point.

It has been back in 2005 for BotCon, but only the head was changed:

Image

Simple color switch otherwise, but the bat snout was removed in order for the head to fit.

Yes this was another one of those figures I considered hunting down the redecos. But after palette swap Galvatron, they go from ridiculously expensive (BW Megs) to insanely rare and expensive (Deathsaurus)
Which is ironic considering how Fun Pub just couldn't get rid of the 2005 toys, having leftover stock as late as 2011, needing to discount so much of it in order to finally be rid of it all.

It is a classic story of "if only I was aware of these back in the day". I had a display in mind for the four Gigatron redecos too. They [in "Pegasus" mode] were going to be the mounts of my four Wolfang molds. Really building on the Fanon I made for them.

Maybe someday...

Nice list, ranking the RiD guys I actually have:

1) RiD Galvatron - love the colors and the mold is fantastic. I don't think I need to rabble past that. I have megatron too, but Galvs is the best of them

2) Rail Racer - I'm just counting the whole set, but it's a pretty dang good set. I enjoy it greatly, and the alt modes are fantastic.

3) Darkscream - love this little dude, He's a bit simple/bulky, and could be streamlined some, but still really fun

I think that's all I have
