Dinobots?

Hello all. New to the forum. Glad to be apart of the group.
Question- as I regrow my collection (I’m 40 and getting back into the mix) I am really looking to put together the Dinobots collection.
Would y’all recommend going the G1 reissue route for the lot, or the Generations Power of the Primes Deluxe class route?
Those are the two I’ve narrowed it down to. Thanks!

There's no "reissues" of the G1 figures, anyone saying they're reissues are just selling knock-off's.
Go for the originals? Could be costly, definitely will be time consuming as you'll need to find them in good condition.
Go for PotP figures? Less costly, will still have to track them down, but they'll be in better condition.
It's really up to you how much time and money you want to put into getting them.

Thanks for the quick reply. I really think the PoP look great- the only issue is it seems Grimlock’s tail is super wide- throws it off a bit. But they are cool with a little better features than G1

Yeah, the lower/back half of PotP Grimlock's dino mode is... not great, in my opinion, but for me that's the only underwhelming part of those five-or-six figures. Better dino mode articulation for the deluxe figures would have been awesome, but given the combining gimmick (and compared to the articulation of the G1 figures), I have no complaints.

I'd go for the PotP ones as well for better accessibility, not to mention they're really close to the G1 originals with their transformations and placement of kibble (Slag had his omitted for usefulness reasons I think).
But do be warned there are KO's of them as well, usually oversized and including die cast metal(!). There are a couple in Power Ranger-like decos (Red for Grimlock, blue for Slag, yellow for Swoop, green for Snarl, orange for Sludge) as well, which may be cool to hunt down.

If you want to step into the Multiverse of Transformers,
And you know you do,
Why not go ALL IN!?

Wow!
Those are awesome. Ok- so since I’ve gotten back into the game I have collected about 70 G1 transformers. From vintage 1985 mini bits, Generations, Titans Return to the new Siege line....but what does “Multiverse” mean? Is it Hasbro ? Those look super cool

Those are unlicensed third party figures.
We have a whole section dedicated to 3P which is where such discussions should be kept.

Ahhh. Got it. I’m a hasbro guy. Thanks for the heads up. Looks like PoP is the way to go on the dinobot search!

Down the track you can always work on the originals anyway.

I'm going for a controversial opinion: the Platinum versions.

I have both these and the Power of the Primes versions and, to me, the PotP versions are too simplified. In Dino mode they seem like worse versions of the G1 originals and in robot mode they're too small and, to me, unimpressive. Grimlock is alright, but only alright.
I found I actually really like the movie's ascetic for the Dinos. They're different, but definitely not bad at all. I like how shiny they are. I like the transformations a lot. They do suffer from money arms, but I can get past that.
Of course I have a lot of 3P dinos too and love 'em the most. But I'm a fool with my money. And they're unofficial, if that matters to you.

I was torn between the too- platinum vs PoP. I ended up going with the PoP lot, slash and the add on kit for Volcanius. Slash and Volcanius are kind of “extra” to me, as I like to stay as close to the G1 cartoon as possible. I’m a bit nostalgic!
Thanks for the feedback. These forums are super cool-love all the opinions and knowledge.

Blame the gimmick. If they weren't designed to be a combiner there would have been less limitations during the design phase.

Can’t go wrong with the Power of the Primes version

Agree!
My whole set came today in the mail.
I gotta admit- I thought Volcanius would be lame- but he’s pretty awesome!

Congrats! I had to admit I was going to skip the PotP Dinobots entirely because I didn’t want my first set of Dinobots getting bogged down by a combiner gimmick, but after getting the upgrade kit and admiring it in hand, I fell in love and continued to change it up until I made Volcanicus completely mine own. Now he is the pride of my collection!

The update add kit makes it great. Agreed.
Also didn’t realize you could attach slash to his back.
I put him up next to Trypticon- and Volcanius looks tiny!

Which upgrade kit did you go for if you don’t mind me asking

Don’t mind at all.
Perfect Effect PC-21
It’s cool. Have the same brand for devastor. Seems like a must have for all combiner kits. Makes it a better scale and more balanced.

Absolutely! New hands and feet are the bare minimum for the official combiners in my opinion

Wow!
Defensor and Superion look unreal!!
I just got back into collecting about 4 months ago.
My goal is to get one each G1 cartoon piece. I started from scratch.
But- there’s a twist- I’m trying to collect what I think is the best “piece” of each character. So it can be true 80’s G1 (mostly the mini bots), Generations, PoP’s, Siege, Earthrise, Titans etc.
I’ve got about 79 pieces so far, but of course doubles of the seekers as the cybertron jets.
The PoP dinobots are right up there.
When I complete my quest- triple Changers are next- I’m going all in on the Combiners.
From what I’ve seen- defensor you have to piece together- you can’t get it as a set?
So the question is- do we consider the dinobots a combined set now??

Sounds like you and I have the same collection goals. Defensor doesn’t come in a set (unless you buy the japanese boxset) and I consider Volcanicus non-canon to G1, so he lives differently on a separate shelf. The collection I have hasn’t changed much over the years, but there are some characters that have been swapped out because of the Siege and upcoming Earthrise lines

Wow!
So. Many. Questions.
Which dinners are those? Masterpiece?
Also- which Version on each side of devastor are those Combiners are on the bottom shelf? Japanese version?
And....what type of display shelf is that? It’s perfect.
