LIST PREPARATION: Top Five (and more) Monsterformers.

I really love the Beast Era. Especially because they dared to think outside the box by creating the most outrageous Transformers ever. Often, the character was a bot that changed into a horrible monster. Other times, it wasn't even a bot, but a monster that changed into another monster. Many of these designs were quite bold.

But it wasn't just the Beast Era that had nice Monsterformers. G1 had them too! Especially on the Pretenders side.

Because so many monsters come as teams or duo, or trio, many entries would be allowed in a single entry like for a combiner team or anyone that goes too well together.

So anything goes as long that at least one mode is a genuine monster.

As usual, I'll leave the thread open as long as it needs so that I can make a decent Top Five list.

First entry that will make my list for sure:

Animorph Ax/Scorpion and Visser Three.

Image

The Animorph line was based on a kid show from the late 1990's. It mostly had very bad toys and the line was short lived. However, the two leaders are AWESOME!

Ax was the good guy, Visser the bad guy. Both had the same "bot mode" meaning some weird alien centaurian creatures with a scorpion tail. Ax is more lanky with big hands while Visser is a BEEFY jock. Both transform very differently.

Image

Ax become a genuine scorpion although his claws are tiny. The amount of joints this thing have is ridiculous! Plus he have a missile launcher in his tail and clamping action in his claw. It's disgusting and I LOVE it!

Visser become an "infernal creature" that is more like a werewolf. One hand shoot a missile while the other have a grabbing action feature. You can appreciate the symmetry of the "gimmick kibbles" behind his arms. It look powerful and is super posable.

Image

I find this fantastic that both have the "same" "bot mode" while having completely different altmode. Like those G1 clones.

--------------

Your turn to subit cool monsterbots!

No monster list is complete without Blot.
Image

Also, depending on your definition of monster, you might be inclined to include Torca / Elephaorpha

Hell yeah the Horrorcons! The whole Abominus team is a strong contender.

The Beast Wars Fuzors are nice, but they are not really "monsters" per se. they are mostly a simple "collage gone wrong" and the normal animal(s) are too obvious.

Maybe he is more Beast-like than monster-like,but Hatchet can be very intimidating.

1000% Agree. DotM Cyberverse Commander Hatchet is freaking awesome. Screen accuracy be damned. I should dig it out from storage.

Yup. I adore him, but that's just a piranha head on a wasp body.

I believe e that's supposed to be a Lionfish, not a piranha.

Well there's the Monsterbots, and Pretender Monsters (it's right there in the name ;) ). Also, while I never purchased any of the toys, I very much enjoy the look of Prime Predaking in the animated series.

I feel like this list needs to not include dragons. Because that's a whole different list and a dragon alt mode would top almost anything.

Universe Razorclaw would be my go-to. He's almost a Gryphon, a classical monster and that color scheme is just fantastic. I also think there's great articulation in the beast mode too, which is not soemthing you always get.

But if fuzors don't count ... I guess Titan Repugnus? Mainly for the nostalgia.

G1 Squeezeplay was one I had as a kid and I loved that "crab" mode. I really wish he had a modern remake.

Deathsaurus would also make my list. I mean, I never had him. Nor do I know anything about him. But he looks cool and is powered by unobtanium.

I guess that's up to Kanrabat, he's making the list. Besides,

Isn't he just a Tigerhawk repaint?

He is awesome, no doubt, and would be on MY list but is also kind-of a Dragon..... ;)

If fuzors are not included, then my other suggestion would be a Decepticon Pretender.

Skullgrin, Iguanus, Submarauder?

Those are definitely monstrous

Those definitely count, and I'll count dragons too. I could post a few on a single spot on the list. The TF Prime dragons were mostly awesome.

Yes, but he has the better colors.

Deathsaurus - Ehhhh, he doesn't look like a dragon to me. A Kaiju, sure, but not really a dragon.

But, if Dragons are included...

TM3 Megatron

Cybertron Scourge (Cyro)

The Prime Predaking with the transparent wings.

Sharkticons/allicons are far enough away in appearance from their animal namesakes to count, right?

Other suggestions whose 'robot' modes are the monster for variety: smashdown, slitherfang, bisk/thermidor, possibly a couple of other RiD2015 'cons, trypticon depending on whether dinosaur is 'real' enough to disqualify even though that's his robot mode.

Trypticon is not a dino, but a Kaiju like Godzilla. He count, but he's not that monstrous. Sharkicons and Allicons do count too. Still look a bit tame though.

For the most part I'd agree, they're basically the Transformers equivalent of Wuzzles. But Torca is the stuff of nightmares!

Image

The only recognizable elephant bit is his tusks and his orca half is grotesquely deformed. He's basically an orca monster that just happens to have tusks.

Speaking of grotesque...

Image

Grotusque is easily my favorite G1 monster. He's such a great looking figure in both forms. His bot mode had all the looks of a noble Autobot, but his monster form had tons of character and thanks to be mistransformed in the '87 and '88 catalog he gained a semi-official four legged sabretooth tiger mode.

I LOVE the G1 Autobot monsters! I have all 3 and their TR updates and they are fantastic.

Torka look awesome too and is definitely a nice monster instead of being just a "bad photoshop" in 3D form. Too bad just looking at him the wrong way will make him ASSPLODE in tiny shards. :(

Do the Beast wars II Cyberbeast count?

Otherwise, KO Sludge

Of course any 3P or KO cannot count for an OFFICIAL list.

As for the cyberbeast, I don't think they count because like the dinobots, they are still too grounded in reality. They are not monsters.

Another that come to mind is Beast Machine Savage Noble.
A werewolf that turn into a demon. That's really RAD and I will go today to by local geek store to buy this genuine monster. I think he have it brand new and used, with only a 5$ of difference between the two. Guess I'll take the new one! :x

This list will be a top ten easy. There's way too much good stuff!

EDIT:

Got mine today and he's definitely making the list!

I dug out my DotM Hatchet from storage and once again, I'm blown away by this toy!

Anyone have a monsterbot to submit?
I'll be making the list and publish the article either tomorrow or the day after. Only if Will is not publishing a list this week, of course.
